does the subwoofer need to be pointed at the listening area?

Hello all,

Quick question for you. Please ask if you need further info for I might not be explaining this the right way.

Does a subwoofer need to be pointed at the listener or can it be place at 90 degree to the listener? I am tring to determine if I need more that 2' of depth behind my fasle wall. The sub I am looking at is 25" deep or 17" wide. If i can place it perpendicular to the listener I am good to go, otherwise I need to make the depth of the false wall more. In my thoughts I think I am good to go with the perpendicular since subs radiate sound and are not directional like fronts, centers and rears are....

Thank you for your advice.

Should make little difference, any way to measure ? I think Art S's Seaton subs are all perpendicular

Great! Thank you.

With bass being omni direction, small changes like that should result in little change, good luck with the build, is there a thread on the build ?

In actual fact rotating a sub can alter your freq response at your listening position which can help or not as it's room dependant.

Not yet. I have it pretty much designed on paper in plan view and section. I will upload it when I get donne making it look pretty! Extremely excited about it.

Quite true, it would be best to experiment with both orientations before committing if that's possible. If you can't do that, I'd play it safe and allow the extra room for either orientation if that's feasible. Don't know what sub your considering but the extra room would allow more options if upgraditis sets in later.

Although it's not my current configuration, I've gotten good results with subs in the front of the room firing sideways instead of towards the back.

I have good results too with firing sideways.

As do I, as I don't have much of a choice but to have it like that unfortunately.

Hsu VTF3/3 and 3/4 are side firing. Epik subs have two drivers that are side firing.
Sure you can rotate the Hsu sub so it is front firing (it would not look to good), or
rotate the Epik subs so one driver is front firing (but then you would have one driver
rear firing). To me at least it makes no difference which way it fires, but you have
to experiment when it is set up to see which position sounds best.

While I have no dog in this hunt, I believe that experimentation on positioning is directly related to the direction it's pointed, but then I could be wrong. If so I've wasted a lot of time over the years crawling all over my HTs' floors
