Continuum ... New Series on Canadian TV - Page 6

My bet is SYFY and it will pair with the January return of BEING HUMAN on Monday nights. I would expect that after BEING HUMAN's run of 13 is done CONTINUUM will then pair with DEFIANCE.

Again I say, if it's the SyFi Network, you'd better be careful what you wish for (remember 'Charlie Jade'?). TNT would be a better fit, paired with 'Falling Skies' which is a bona fide cablenet hit.

What ever network it is, and I'm assuming a cable network as I don't see this show having any shot at all on one of the Big 4, running 20 episodes consecutively does not seem likely at all. Off the top of my head, I can't think of any show that has run 20 episodes consecutively on a cablenet. You know darn well Syfy is not going to do that, they love their x.5 seasons too much, unless, as you note, it's run very late night/very early morning where it's never going to get any ratings anyway.

Having a Canadian show fail on a US channel doesn't necessarily mean it will die; after all, The Listener got renewed for a fourth season on CTV, even though NBC pulled it in the middle of its first season.

A bigger problem with Canadian imports is that seasons prior to the pickup get censored and post-pickup seasons end up with watered-down dialogue to comply with the FCC's asinine regulations. Be prepared for Kiera to start saying "Fiddlesticks!" every time the terrorists best her in season 2 if the show really did get picked up in the states. It's sadly better for the integrity of Canadian shows if they stay in Canada, even if it means they will have a smaller audience.

Well sure. How many eps did this show have in its first season? Is it on the equivalent of a broadcast network in Canada?

SyFy doesn't have a very good track record with "adult" sci-fi, much less so when they buy a program on the cheap and have no skin in the game, a la 'Charlie Jade'. They didn't promote it at all, and then vanquished it to burn-off hell when an audience didn't just miraculously stumble on it right out of the gate. Why would anyone think they'd treat 'Continuum' any differently?

Can't remember what network 'Defying Gravity' was on, but wasn't it a Big Four summer fill-in? That was guaranteed to fail.

Continuum had 10 episodes in this first series, which is typical of how many a cable network will usually run here in the US, once in awhile there's been 13. Showcase could be described as similar to a TNT or USA in that they have loads of syndicated shows from major broadcast nets in the US, the UK and elsewhere I'm sure, and they also have their own original series as well, Continuum being one of those.

Yeah, I really don't see this showing up on Syfy, for one thing I can't see Showcase/Shaw allowing it to be treated as schedule stuffer when it's one of their most popular and successful shows.

Defying Gravity was on ABC and was without question schedule stuffer from the get go, it's one of the reasons they never aired all the episodes.

SyFy runs LOST GIRL which is a Canadian production and in fact they have a shared agreement with Canada in HAVEN.

That's true, and it looks as if Lost Girl has run 22 episodes consecutively so there are exceptions to the general cablenet rule of 10/13 episodes per.

I don't however, consider Syfy as being a "major US network", I generally associate that description with the Big 4 OTA broadcast networks, not a cable-only network.

Is it totally imperative that a USA based station picks this show up to ensure it's survival? Lost Girl was renewed for a second season before any Syfy involvement, wasn't it? I was hoping for a 20 ep run for season #2, but still, I ask again is it necessary for a US station to have involvement in the making of this show?

Not that I can see.

I hate to keep making 'Charlie Jade' references in regard to this show but the uncanny similarities to this one make it relevant. Robert Werthheimer, the EP and showrunner of CJ, said it was absolutely imperative to have a viable and enthusiastic U.S. partner in order to see a second season of that show. As as been mentioned, Sci-Fi Channel, as it was then known, was not that partner. That said, 'Continuum' may have a deeper pocket of investment dollars. But I doubt it's a better show.

Having a US broadcaster would be ideal for any series-especially one with a significant budget. But it isn't necessary for a show's survival if that show is performing well in it's home country. NBC picked up a Canadian ''genre lite'' show called The Listener for a summer run a couple of seasons ago...it failed on NBC and they pulled it without airing all 13 episodes. It's now in it's third season and CTV has ordered a fourth.

I would rather it run on TNT but I'll take any channel.

I'm sad and miss this show.

From what I can find, Continuum has a much more robust money backing operation than Charlie Jade ever had, so I agree, whether or not a US network is involved is not a make or break situation for the show.

My biggest concern is that they don't sell out to a US broadcaster(as in give them input into the creative process), it's a great show, but I'm more worried a Syfy or similar outfit thinks they could make it better.

Not to worry- Continuum is too "Sci-Fi" for Syfy, they'd be more interested in Canadian wrestling programs

Sigh...I was really hoping another outlet would carry the show. Just wanted to have a different network give it the care, promotional support, and attention that would help it thrive and survive.

Bad news: They treat it like 'Charlie Jade'.
Good news: They learned something from CJ and will treat it better. Hey, here's an idea: give it some promotion so people will know it's actually on the schedule.

Ouch... Charlie Jade only did one season and judging by the youtube trailer of it didn't look that great....

Well hopefully Aquire means only the rights to air in the US. If that's the case then so be it, it doing well here shouldn't mean a lot if it stays in Canada. Praying and hoping that SyFy doesn't take this show over completely because IMO the production values and story would probably be ruined.

Definitely, but given the companies involved in creating the show it doesn't seem likely.
