OK - this post is more about PLAYERS, not tunes...but....
Kinda hard to pick just one great Steve Harris bass part, isn't it? When it comes to metal, I list Harris as my personal fave "traditional" bassist, Lemmy as my "plays bass like a freakin' guitar" fave. Geezer Butler falls in the mix, too.
Catching Iron Maiden this August on their summer US tour - looking forward to what should be a pretty cool "classic Maiden" set.
Before Rush fans pipe in, I do not consider Rush "metal" - Geddy Lee was/is pretty amazing - and a great bass tone to boot. Chris Squire (Yes) is another prog fave of mine in terms of what he plays, despite my generally not digging his recorded tone in most cases. Les Claypool is a monster, but sometimes the monster should just lay back & groove.
For all around melodic playing, still hard to top McCartney's contributions to the Beatles rhythm section. And for me, take McCartney's melodic style & inject it with copious amounts of HGH and you get John Entwistle.
