How does HD TV look on 60" and above screens?

I'm just curious if anyone with experience can chime in, it would be appreciated.

I currently have a 50" S1 and have got the itch to upgrade to a 60 or 65 inch screen. I mostly watch HD content via DirecTV, I would say 90% or more. The other 10% is bluray and games. I like the way HD TV looks on my 42 and 50 inch plasmas, I don't notice any artifacts at all. Will I notice artifacts or imperfections on a 60 or 65 inch tv, let's say a GT50 or VT50?

I watch a 1080i signal on my gt50 65 inch and it looks great.

I just went from a 50" Pioneer plasma to a 65VT50 and the picture is absolutely stunning. You won't regret it in the least.

It all depends on how close you are to the TV. Artifacts are there to be seen but if you're far enough away, it isn't as noticeable. That being said, the size difference between 65" and 50 is a lot and even if you see some artifacts, you will appreciate the added size.

Great to hear the PQ is great even on HD TV content, thanks.

stumlad, I will be 11 to 12 feet away.

Oh God 11-12 ft is plenty away. Something else you have to keep in mind is that the VT50 handles SD content better this year. So even 480p doesn't look bad on it. 720p/1080i will look fantastic and you won't notice a difference between this and your 50". Compression artifacts and whatnot will be there but you won't notice it at that distance. There still there on your 50" but unless a couple ft from screen you won't notice.

But any miniscule artifacts that you may or may not see watching 'less than great' content is forgiven when you take the extra real estate into account. 50 to 65 is big jump and totally worth doing. A typical encoded blu-ray will have your jaw dropped like no 50-55 could do. I've been down this road and I'm regretting my choice of 55". I thought it would be big enough but I was wrong. Esp now that plasmas have smaller bezels and better processing, making the picture even cleaner. Really though SD content on my 55UT50 isn't bad at all even up close. I was quite surprised. No difference at all between this and my Kuro 5020 at the same viewing distance of about 10ft. In fact the UT50 handles SD on par if not better. At 11-12ft I would at least go 60" if I did it again.

I do notice some artifact on my 64" Sammy with directv hd. Bluray looks perfect, but I do notice compression artifact. I'm probably 8 ft away. I didn't really notice it on my old 50" 720p Panny or my 720p projector. I'm chalking it up to the higher resolution and the larger screen size. It definitely has a lot more detail than my old one. Source defects are definitely much more noticeable.

At 11-12 feet viewing distance on a 60" screen, you are only just seeing the benefit of 1080p over 720p. See this chart However, I assume your question was more about the quality of DirectTV's PQ. If DirectTV's HD is better than 720p but not up to OTA 1080, you may not even notice! If you sat close enough to get the most benefit from BluRay or OTA good HD, you should be sitting closer - like 7-8 feet.

I'm about to get a 60" plasma (probably the GT50) for a planned seating position of 8-9' - I am used to a home theater 110" JVC RS1 FP viewed from 13'. OTA HD can approach BluRay on that system but Dish and PVR stuff often shows some artifacts - but they would be visible even from 20 feet
