cd sound is really bad

I have a Sherwood 5.1 receiver RD-6504. The sound only comes from the front left and right speakers when playing a cd from a stereo player. I have tried to select stereo from the audio receiver selection but still sound is dreadful.
Is there a way to "force" the receiver to play to all speakers?

I would expect a $150 receiver from Sherwood to sound pretty poor, personally. The CD player could be part of the problem if its quality is also that low. And the speakers?? Who knows what they are.

Since most CD players only put out two channels of audio, I don't know why you would expect anything other than 2 channels.

If you have it, use Dolby PLII to matrix your 2 channel to 5-channels.

Thanks for your help.
I suppose I jumped into the purchase with low research.
I must add that I paid much more than $150.00 in Australia, making me believe that it was capable of delivering decent sound from 2 and 5 channel sources.
I will check out the sound selection and get back to you.
By the way, what audio.video receiver would you recommend?

I would give little credence to the criticism offered regarding your receiver. While you didn't buy top of the line its not likely this is the reason for your discontent.

You haven't mentioned how the CD player and receiver are connected, nor the source material. Speakers, listening volume, your room - they all play a part, and even the upcoming recommendation of Cambridge will not improve things on its own

Surprised he didn't plug Cambridge in his first post.

To eboy45:

What speakers are you using? CD player? Digital or analog connection?

Learn how to operate this Sherwood first.

Step#1: Operate Receiver as 2.1. The manual, I hope it says ENABLE SUBWOOFER, this turns on an internal crossover, sending LFE to the sub and the rest to your fronts (I hope it does). Should notice immediate improvement.

Step#2: Enable Surrounds. Receiver should (I hope again) have several surround modes for you to select. The PLII as mentioned but play with HALL, Stadium modes etc.

THEN if this is not sufficient, will I open the wallet again.
