Are You Looking For A Less Expensive Norco 4220 / 4224 Alternative? - Page 38

Hey, if anybody is buying this case and tossing the mobo, please consider selling it to me biggrin.gif

Specifically, I'm looking for the Supermicro H8DME-2 (Rev 2.0.1A). Sadly I got an earlier rev board that can't support the 6-core CPUs...

Thanks!

I'll check my board when I get home, I've got an AMD board out of the supermicro system.

Thanks OP for the mods! I think they are going to do well. Everything seems much more streamlined, more open for airflow. I got the fan wall and the backplate, and purchased some arctic cooling fans- 2 X 80mm and 3 X 120mm. Hopefully this will cut the noise down considerably. It cant do any worse than what it was for sure. I have had this server since 2011, and didnt realize there was an entire thread devoted to my find. I posted this find in another forum and just about got run out because of all the "legacy" hardware. I found it while searching for the 3tb drivers for the SATA cards. Glad to know there is a thread devoted to it. Here are some pics of my mod. I have the one with the PCI-X slots and the Xeon board. Bought a matched pair of low power xeons, and added 8gb of RAM. Just waiting for the 3 120mm fans and a Seasonic X750 psu to arrive. It's been running great for over a year now. Couldnt be happier!

BTW if anybody with one of these is getting rid of the MB and happen to have a LGA 771 heatsink and cooler they would like to part with hit me up on pm....would like to take it off your hands. Thanks again.

Looks good Astrohed... I think we may have chatted on the phone prior my purchase from TAMSolutions. Glad you are finally getting your server modded out!

ahhh I remember now. What a great thread. Itching to get my psu and fans so i can fire her back up.

I bought one of the 2u units. Had tested it to confirm it was working but hand't installed an OS until a few days ago. I got unRaid up and running fairly easily. I remember reading something in the thread here about how to enable the ability to run with only 1 power supply and turn off the loud beeeeeeep! that sounds if one of them is unplugged. I don't really need redundant power supplies and if I could save one of them for if the other fails that would be nice. I did a search of the thread but couldn't come up with the post that mentioned how it was done. I couldn't find anything in bios that looked like what was needed.

Anyone know?

Thanks!

Pull the power supply out of the case or at least enough that the contacts don't touch inside. The beep should stop... If not, rebooting should fix it.
Thanks! I will give that a try after my 2TB of data transfer finishes up.

Wow so emailed them to try to get some info sadly no response yet but ill wait patiently hoping to get my hands on one of those AIC setups. I had one main question about those of you who had this setup. Is anyone running WHS 2011 or WS 2012 with flexraid? I looking to use this type of hardware for a dynamically expanding raid NAS/Seedbox serving 2 pc's for holding videos music and tons of MAME backups. I dont need VM's i have no idea what i would do with them so i dont think i need massive hardware for it.

Sorry... but I do believe that TAMSolutions sold out of the AIC machines a long time ago.

They are still waiting on the next batch of Supermicros.

Anybody looking for an AIC 4U, I have one that I'm getting rid of. Choice of AMD or Intel boards. I bought and upgraded a SuperMicro 4U so no longer need the AIC. PM if interested.

Almost finished with putting the server together. Lots of drilling and some parts of the case looks like Swiss cheese. I'm waiting for the molex to P4 adapter to come in the mail since my PSU did not come with one. So I have moved on to looking at putting the hard drives in the case. I noticed that the drive trays did not have any screws. So what screws would I use to hold the hard drives to the cage? Is there anything else I need to put the hard drive in the cage?

Also since I replaced the PSU will the beeping noise upon start-up not happen? I was a little confused about that aspect of switching out the PSU.

Thanks

Here's a website that I found screws, but not sure if any of these would work. http://discountechnology.com/Products/Screws-Bolts-Hard-Drive-Trays-Sleds-Caddies-Carrier

replacing PSU to minimize the original PSU fan noise and lower power consumption (by replacing with current PSU)

You can flash the bios and will be able to use the 6Cores.

Litlgi74 posted information on how to make a USB-Floppy boot disk earlier in the thread. You can use that to flash the board.

as I saw on motherboard PDF, ONLY V2.X supports 6 cores :P...

The PDF was out before the new release of the firmware. I am running on a 2.0.1 board with dual 2419EE. There are also a few people on the Unraid forum who has the same setup after flashing.

aha,. you are on V 2.X :P

mine is V 2.X..

if anyone can confirm V1.X can do 6 cores... that would be good.

as I read. the manual stated V2.X to support 6 Cores.
SM had reasons to state the statement in the manual.

I hope TAMSolutions gets more of the SuperMicro servers in soon because this would be perfect for my new server room smile.gif

Dang, just went to fire up the computer and it started for less than a second then nothing. Tried starting it again and then I smelt burning electronics. It was coming from the hard drive that came with the system. So I think that hard drive is fried now. I also think the CPU is gone as well. Once I disconnected the hard drive from power then system turns on and stays on but no beeping and no video on the screen. The 4 pin adapter to the CPU was on the same line as the hard drive so I think it may have taken out the cpu as well. My mistake for using a different brand PSU cable on the new PSU I bought. So now I get to tear everything apart and start from scratch again. Does anyone know if the tray that came with the computer still work with newer motherboards?

So what do you think caused the problem... The 4pin cable?
The PSU manufacture that I purchased from said don't use other PSU cables and that it could cause problems. This is how it was.

PSU --- Cable---molex --- molex--- molex--- Hard Drive

4-pin adapter
|
|
4 pin - adapter on motherboard that provides power to CPU

Hard drive electrical connection was smoking so I think that cable may have damaged the cpu, which is why it is not posting.

The 4-pin adapter actually connects to the first molex but it is not showing that when I posted this.

that is it .
I suspect pin configurations are not identical.

is this SM server? the case will fit atx, e-atx(regular not oversized) mother board... not sure on m-atx( it should...)
I got the intel board. This is the first case that was part of the thread. I am using the tray that came with the case. So I don't know if other motherboards will line up with the same holes that this motherboard has. I was looking at getting a regular ATX board. The Z77 I think since I have a i7 2700K lying around.

What do you mean that the pin configuration is not identical?

TViewer....Can you post a photo of the 4pin cable you were using? I am curious on how the wiring was setup?
Here is a photo of the connector. http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10245&cs_id=1024502&p_id=1321&seq=1&format=2

I don't think the connector caused the problem, I think it was the Thermaltake Modular cable that I plugged into the Cosaire Modular PSU that I bought for the new case. I think whatever shorted that took out the hard drive took out the CPU or motherboard since it was on the same line.

The cable is referred to as a molex to P4 adapter.

Unless the pinout of the adapter cable mates the socket on your PSU you probably shorted a hot lead to ground and fried everything in the process. You should only use cables for modular PSUs that were designed specifically for that PSU as all manufacturers may not use the same connector pinouts. I'm surprised a modular PSU didn't come with the 4-pin cable for the CPU. You can usually get spare cables from the PSU manufacturer.
