What would be required to marry to servers together to be seen as one large server

TamSolutions has a Supermicro 2U (12bay) as well.

Here are the specs:
Supermicro SAS826TQ
Supermicro X7SBE
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0Ghz
Kingston 4GB RAM
(1) Supermicro SAT2-MV8
(2) 800 watt PSU (redundant)
All This For $189.00!!!

If you would like one of these machines before they are sold out... give TamSolutions a call at 801-796-1696... they only have about 17 or so left in stock!
The case fans in this machine are the same as the ones in the 4Us and are very loud... but they too can be very easily replaced with virtually silent fans.
The PSU fans are also much quieter than the ones that come with the 4U.
I have one of these machines as well... so if you have any questions... I would be glad to help.
Just thought I would share.

How are the orders taken?, ebay?, email?

Mine say out for delivery... Any moment now. biggrin.gif

They arrived, so far exactly as advertised. Still playing with unboxing the first one. Drat, no hotswap bay plastic fillers or drive screws. Anyone know if home depot or ace has screws that will work ?

Provantage.com seems to have the cheapest price + shipping.

So I got my Supermicro server. Holy CRAP! That is an insane amount of noise in stock configuration. If only you could have seen the look on my wife's face when she came out to the office and saw it running! On the bright side, it looks like the Norco fan wall is perfectly sized for this. I will just have to find a way to mod it tastefully and see how a MicroATX board works with it. This is going to be a fun project but a bit of a long one I'm afraid!

Maybe try replacing the PSU and the default fans with quieter ones? I'm going to try that first (like OP suggested) and see what happens, I really don't want this to become another project :)

Ohhh those PSUs are going out SO fast! Just with them on the noise is enough to drive me up a wall! 80mm fans tend to have a nasty whine too so we'll see....
I may regret it, but I'm leaving the stock PSUs in place. They are incredibly loud and whine like no tomorrow, but I won't hear them in my basement.

FYI, after power-on and trying to boot from USB to install OS had nothing but problems. Was considering a BIOS update (mine has a BIOS date of 2008) but then I decided to go into BIOS and load Optimized defaults and voila, boots fine off the USB.

Thank you sirs. Follow-up question, in the manual for my 16 bay supermicro chassis it mentions for best thermal cooling of the drive area to make sure non-occupied disk bays have a plastic filler in place of the drive. How true is that and do you think it applies to all SM chassis ? In otherwords do I need to get some fillers ? biggrin.gif

I am so glad that everyone is happy with there machines so far.... I would suggest you swap out the 80mm with quieter fans before replacing the the fan wall with 120mm fans.

Also... if you go into the bios and advanced>hardware monitor> you can generally adjust the fan speed.... choosing Server... sets the case fans to the speed of the cpu. This makes the machine even quieter.

I am curious if IPMIView does any thing differently than SuperDoctor III Remote Management.

Yup, good point. I've seen the choices of "default", "server" and "workstation". Right now at "workstation", fans are at about 4500RPM.

That looks like it will do all of the same stuff, although it looks like it needs a web client to be installed on the OS running on the SM. I'm using OpenIndiana and didn't see a client listed, also I'm perfectly happy with IPMIView as I was able to:

1. See sensor readings
2. Control the console
3. Power-off / Power-on

So happy with this thing, can't even describe it. Thanks again sir!!!

So you are going to keep the stock case fans in?

For the time being, I think so. It's going in the basement and I won't hear it, plus I want to see what drive temps are with the stock fans for a point of reference if I end up replacing the fans.

My server was supposed to be delivered today but there was a UPS screwup which I will have to resolve with Tamsolutions tomorrow. Anyway, a stupid question about hotswap drives, the reason we're buying these servers -

- I'm assuming the drive failure/status led's are going to work

- what happens when a drive fails? Ideally I'd like to get an email warning and see the error via IPMI/Remote manager. But I'm guessing this depends on the OS/software as well? I will be using Windows (Server or 8) with FlexRaid.

Glad you have a place to hide the noise... The stock 80's push some serious CFMs Most quiet fans don't even come close!

Btw if anyone wants the original PSU's and fans, let me know.

As far as disk failures/leds go, I could be mistaken but a large part of that function is on the disk controllers. On OpenSolaris and OpenIndiana, I have never been able to blink or otherwise see failure leds when using the Supermicro AOC controllers. LSI controllers on the other hand, I've had success with.

Part of my address was left off the label so UPS didn't deliver, and they won't let me correct it (a change counts as a new address and isn't free). I'm hoping they'll let the shipper do it.

Do most people who run servers like this have a UPS? I'm not sure if I should get one, it would have to be dedicated to the server and i couldn't also run my pc off it since the server has to be in a separate area.

I think that most people who run a hardware raid use a UPS...Power loss with a RAID 5 is really not an option.

I use one just to eliminate disruption in movies during a power outage.

Would you also consider selling the side vertical drive mount used for the IDE drive on these ? I need a second for a mirrored root.
