It looks more like white, or I may be wrong.

My Integra DTR-50.4's LCD is white, so its probably something they have in common. After all, they have more in common than they have differences.

In photos it looks like having slight blue tint, but I've never seen it live. Anyways white would be even beter - you could make it any color you like by applying color filter smile.gif

None that I am aware of,my units run like a charm so far.It runs far cooler than the 807.This was my replace unit. The 807 was a combination barbecue grill receiver.Could watch a movie and grill a nice piece of salmon at the same time.
Onkyo's lower end models have been a nightmare though, check Onkyo's forum.
Has anyone NOT updated their firmware yet (besides me that is)?

The complaints on Onkyo's forum are a concern... however, none of them specifically mention the 818. Their lower end models seem to be the problem.

I am looking to buy a new receiver. Are there any receivers in $800-$850 price range that can beat the 818 ?

No. Not unless you care about proper 24P output. If that's not a concern for you the 818 cannot be matched at this price, or even for a couple hundred bucks more.

Perfect.

I did this today, and it works like a charm. The XBMC works super smooth. I was totally unaware that this was even an option (I knew you could jailbreak it, just had never researched what the jailbreak did.)

Thank you so much!!
I see most people run XBMC with a pc..

Do you just jailbreak this and connect a NAS system and you get the interface just like how you scrolled through movies and tv series etc etc?

Depends on whom you ask, couple of owners complained about shutters during 24p playback on their plasmas, someone had hiss'ing noise on woofer.
So far I'm happy with mine.

Thank you both.smile.gif Mine is within a 30d return window but so far haven't had much time to set it up as I've also got a Denon 3312.
Far cooler - good to know and reassuring.
24p stutter - not a huge issue as I have a vp but shame it occurs as I'd like to try the HQV scaler.
hissing - will have to see.

People are saying in the Audyssey thread about the bad mic, how common is this for the 818?
Sorry for all the paranoia but I've read too many horror stories...

You get the full version of XBMC on a ATV device is that's what you mean, so yes you get the full GUI experience and can stream direct from a NAS share.

Take a look at:

http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=XBMC
http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Apple_TV_1
http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Apple_TV_(iOS)

If you want a bit more functionality on the iOS side as well as XBMC then look into aTV Flash, this however will cost you, see http://firecore.com/

From streaming from the nas.. Are you streaming Blu ray iso files flawless without any loss of video or quality? How about 3d ?

I do care about proper 24P output. Can it be fixed or are they going to fix via firmware update ?
Well i just purchased a 818 . I cant wait for it to arrive
post #2331 of 6969
No! I did tons of research and you will not find a receiver sub $1200 that has audyssey XT32. And it blows audyssey XT away! I still can't believe what it did to my sub. Just sounds sick! Just get it,you won't have buyers remorse. I have no issues with mine. Very happy with it.
I ordered mine today.. I have 2 subs but I probably will be pleased with my sound either way. I never had any high end audio equipment just htib stuff.

My setup that I STILL HAVE NOT HEARD is

2 Martin Logan Motion 12s

4 Martin Logan Motion 10s

1 Martin Logan Motion C

2 Martin Logan Dynamo 500s

No faults with mine. With previous firmware I once couldn't switch the AV on with the remote, but I guess that was fixed. Great AV.

I have about 500 or so movies sitting on a NAS box. They range in size from 700mb to 38gb. While I have only been using it for less than 24 hours, I cannot say if it will play every file I have.

What I can tell you is that it worked like magic for my 14gb Avatar file which is in the MKV format. It also worked flawlessly for a HSBS 25gb file in 3D. That file was also MKV.

You simply set up a share in the XBMC (which was already sitting there on my NAS), and once you have set it up, you simply navigate the menu of the XBMC and play whatever files are on your server. It is an extremely clean interface and almost beautiful to look at.

I do not have any ISO files on my server, so I cannot tell you if that works. It did, however, read DVD VOB files perfectly.

The jailbreak process was fairly simple and easy to do. Check out the firecore website. The jailbreak is free. The Firecore file system is not. It was $30 - but so worth it.

The website has step by step tutorials that you can follow while doing the entire process. If you have any other questions, let me know.

There shouldn't be any problem if you have a working ethernet link. A quick back of the envelope computation tells you that to stream a 50 GB blu-ray lasting 2 hours you'd need a bandwidth of 50e9*8/2/3600 = 55.6e7 bps i.e. 56 Mbps in average, which should fit comfortably even accounting for overhead in a 100 Mbps network. A piece of cake on a gigabit ethernet network. If we're talking wifi it would have to be 802.11n with a very good router and no other nearby access points. Even with the reputed Netgear WNDR 3700 at home I'm unable to hit the 50+ Mbps required via wifi.

XBMC can really handle everything, +1 to that. I never tried XBMC on an apple TV but XBMC itself is free and can be installed on any computer. It's also the same codebase used by the Boxee Box. I use XBMC on my laptop and it handles NAS, windows shares and DLNA servers without a hitch. It also displays big pictures much faster than my WDTV Live or PS3 (but that's probably due to the processor and / or graphics card).

Can you take this to a more appropriate thread? There are plenty of threads in the networking and home media sections that are more appropriate places to have this discussion than in a thread for the Onkyo 818. I understand that this originated out of a tangential Onkyo question but it has derailed.

Kind of like showing up at a comic book convention and you happen to mention how much you like the Green Bay Packers. People might humor with some light banter, but if you start putting on football jerseys and cheese-head hats and asking 1000 questions, people are going to start to get annoyed.

Yes, I'm annoyed.

Onkyo has a terrible track record with fixing things like this. One person I had been in contact with had been told Onkyo in Japan was going to provide a fix, which has not as of yet materialized, so he dumped the 818 and got something that actually works.

I don't know if the problem only affects certain make/models of TV, but the problem is definitely there and people with both Plasma and LCD technology TVs have reported it.

I am using the workaround of hooking my Plasma up to the secondary HDMI out, which does not exhibit the problem. My only alternative would be to spring for a much more expensive AVR like the new Denon 4000 series.

I should stress that no one should purchase one of these expecting Onkyo will fix it. In all likelihood it will never be fixed.

I agree, there are more appropriate places for certain conversations - but show me a single thread (on this, or any forum) that has 2000+ posts that stayed on topic from beginning to end.

Well you did get something right, you are new here.

I didn't say squat with the first ten posts that wanted to ask about media players but when you start to get into a complete side topic about which media players are better than others, what formats do they play, how do I set them up or jailbreak them someone has to call BS on it.

It might not have occurred to you that some of us get email alerts on updates to this thread and it's a distraction when we go to read the latest updates to the thread only to discover that 80% of what's been posted in the last 24 hours has nothing to do with the topic at hand.

If you don't like my tone then by all means flag a moderator, maybe it will bring this mess to their attention and some of it will get cleaned up so we can get back on topic.

Hey guys. Crossed my fingers and bit the bullet and got an 818 from A4L. For the price I cannot see anything that comes close to the feature set that this A/V receiver provides. The Audyssey 32 alone was worth the nudge I needed from going with a Marantz SR-70XX. Okay, so no airplay (seems weird not to have it in this tier, but no biggy) and wi-fi can be initiated with issue from what I've read so far. Yeah, it's a refurb, but A4L is a reputable house, so buying it from them at this cost is more than worth it.

So I know that many of you have this receiver, so how has its performance been for you guys so far. Also, how many of you have gotten it from A4L?
