I feel that this AVR will be down to $800 very soon but I really need the dual HDMI output to take care of a 2nd area and it's not worth saving a trivial amount to hold off for what could be another month before the next price drop.

I think you're right. Amazon is already dropping the price by about $10 every 5 hours or so. Hopefully this continues. Looking very promising so far!

Got mine for $899.99 and am very happy. I have long been an Onkyo fan since owning an Integra back in the mid 80s.

If they drop the price to $500, I would not mind one bit. I would however, buy another one. wink.gif And who, save my wife, could blame me?

Kawie01. Forgive me if this is a newbie reply. But I would think it may be best to use the main output for your tv, as from reading the manual it seems OSD is only on the main output, and I am guessing you may use the tv more?

Has anyone got their 818 to work with a harmony remote? My harmony 1100 is not working with it even though the website says it does. I REALLY don't want to spend 4 hours teaching it all the commands frown.gif

After doing a good bit of reading over the last couple of months, I had decided on the Onkyo 818.
When the sale started at Vann's, it forced my hand and I pulled the trigger last week.
It is due to arrive on Wednesday.

Now, a new problem has arisen... I may have put the cart before the horse.
I currently have no speaker system and I need a little help.
Could someone, anyone please help me out?

Yes, it has an aluminum front panel, including the front inputs cover (at least as far as i can tell - it doesn't seem like plastic to me).

Definitely doesn't run hot - 90 degrees top front to 100 degrees top back (according to my infrared thermometer). I do have it in a stand that is completely open an all sides though with about a 1 inch gap above it, so it gets plenty of air.

Both. It can do video processing to 1080p HDMI inputs or you can have it just pass it through. See page 70 of the manual for the extensive picture processing options.

That's a really nebulous question...

Audio settings for what? Post processing, surround modes, Audyssey settings, etc..

What kind of content you are listening too mostly, what speaker setup do you have (5.1, 7.1, etc..) how loud you listen to said content, room size...

Help us out with some more information about your setup and we can try and give you some suggestions?

Have you tried it as a 3009 or 5009?

My Directv codes for the 1009 work fine for volume... while there is the new Quick Setup menu button, there's not much else different that the x009 model remotes..

As you mention, that usually refers to a bad cable, or a long cable run with sub standard cabling.

Obviously first thing to try is swapping output cables and seeing if the problem follows...

I have Direct TV and Blu-Ray player, 2 contents I watch the most. Far as sound system is concerned, I have onkyo 818 and 7.1 onkyo receivers (which is THX certified I think).

does anyone actually use the video processing to improve picture? i figured if i buy this i will probably get my tv calibrated and just set the receiver to pass through the sources. also how does the ISF feature on this receiver work?

I know there is no price talk and i won't mention prices, but I am curious as to why the price is dropping significantly each day? Is there a receiver a level up being released soon (1018?)? If this thing drops price any further I may be pulling the trigger very soon.

No issues controlling mine with 1100 Harmony, as far as turning on/off and volume up/down.
I haven't try to use the menu through Harmony, normally I set up each source to my liking with receiver's remote and then just use Harmony for basic things. If I really need to dig into the menu then I use my galaxy note to do so.

I have my Direct TV (model HR24) set up to native and have the receiver upscale to 1080p no other enhancements (huge picture improvement IMO). For BD I pass through and let the BD do the processing, I no longer play DVDs so I can't answer for improvements in this area. Game consoles (xbox, ps3) I pass through as well but might switch to upscale to 1080p (on the fence with this)
I don't use ISF on the receiver I use the ones on my TV instead (day/night 65VT30)

Getting your TV calibrated and choosing which device does VPP are discrete decision points. Given the 818's HW, there's a good chance that it have better VP capabilities than the display.

why wouldn't you have your consoles output at 1080p rather than having the receiver upscale it?

I don't think so (but would be cool as hell if you could). You can only choose from certain modes (direct, through, custom, game, etc.) and whatever is available in them for each source.
