Onkyo TX-NR818 "official" owner's thread discussion - Page 146

Thank you for your input. The projector is being used for mixed content (TV, DVD, BR, AppleTV, etc) and since the screen is larger as you assumed (106"), I will first start with your suggested option #1 and see how that works.

When researching AVRs, I had no idea that the 2 outputs did not offer the VP - seems that a unit of this range/price would offer the same quality from both outputs. This is after all why people need 2 outputs. Besides that, I am enjoying the AVR so far in my limited time of owning/running.

Thanks again.

I found a deal on fumfie.com for $799 new. It appears this is a good deal from everything I have read, but does anyone have experience with fumfie? Sorry if this is the wrong forum.

They don't appear to be an approved Internet dealer...

Hey All,
I've decided to give the reciever a second try. I love the sound and video, minus the 1080/24 bug.( I'm holding out for a fix.) I really didn't get it for the video processing, that was just icing on the cake. I happened to fall in love with what it does for everyting except 1080/24 when watching blueray's. I guess if it really bothers me I can allways switch it to direct or through for bluerays.......anyways..the real problem...is....
I'm having to send my unit back to Amazon. The past few weeks its starting to manifest a problem. When I turn the receiver on it makes a clicking sound like it's relays are trying to switch to something and can't. The sound is really staticy sounding, and muffled. On top of that it makes loud popping noises in my speakers and sub. It doesn't matter what I do, or switch inputs , it'll finally shut itself off. When I turn it back on it'll work fine , till the next time I turn it off for the night, and back on in the morning. I seen a few others had this problem with no resolve. I've changed inputs from last setting to direct , and even try to turn it off and on while its making the noises. Till it turns its self off, there no fix. So Amazon is sending me a replacement. I really like this receiver, I've had Denon's and Yamaha's in the past, and this is my favorite so far, even with this little hiccup. Don't let my experience sour your decision, ever manufacturer has abad one come off the line now and then.

OK, Time to get some sound advice from the experts.
I have been listening to my 818 with 4 x NHT vt-2's, a pair of AR-9's and the rest of the 7.1 is small Infinity fill ins until I can get them replaced with something else.

I want to run my AR-9'S on a JVC M3030 150 wpc power amp that I have had since 1980 or so. The 4 ohm Ar-9's are so inefficient and really suck the power from the 818. I have since pulled them offline until I can get the JVC added to the mix.

How do I integrate them in the 818 scheme using my JVC amp? I figured I would ask the big dogs on here. I am primarily a music listener with the occasional movie thrown in.

Please be specific as to how to accomplish this, or point me to a good how to article/link?

Many thanks for all the good info on here-been following this thread since Jun.

Take the RCA jacks labeled front pre-out (you can see them here http://mocoloco.com/mr/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/onkyo-tx-nr818-av-receiver-rear.jpg) and run them into the input on your JVC power amp. Since the 818 does not have switched AC outlets, there might be no easy way to trigger the turn on of your JVC amp with the 818 so you might be stuck having to manually power it up when you are using it.

Jim, this got me thinking.. is this limitation apply to most amps that connect to 818? Does it have any trigger that can do this?
from the documentation, it seems like we have trigger for zone2/zone3. Now, if I do not use zone2/zone3 (only a 7.1 setup), can I use those trigger instead to turn on the amp for the main zone?

I think if you do a search of this thread for keyword "trigger" you will find lots of info on what is (or isn't) possible. I know that the 818 is lacking some options that the higher end AVRs have in the way of triggering power on of external amplifiers. One relatively cheap solution is to purchase a green power strip that has one "hot" outlet and then provides switched power to other outlets when that hot outlet is turned on. Plug the 818 into the main outlet and plug external amps into the outlets that get switched on when the primary outlet is turned on. Leave the amps physically turned "on" all the time and let the power strip turn them on and off via power for the main unit.

Someone in the forum has suggested using voltage on USB port to trigger amp. It might work with some amps but not others, since USB provides 5V instead of 12V.

Thanks guys!
I did a search and looks like what I thought should work. i.e. to use Zone2 trigger. I also found that there is a discrete IP control for zone2 ON/OFF, so I can just add that to my irule as part of the power up/down sequence.

Hi Folks

New guy here, already used the search function extensively, but had no luck.
I have a short question: Does the NR818 have a Display Off function? I only read about dim and some passthrough mode for audio with display off but i would need the AVR to be totally black as it would be right in the viewing angle while watching a movie.

Thanks for the information, much appreciated.
Greetings
Dan

No... been waiting for years...

I am really debating on the 818 vs. the denon 3312CI.

I guess the biggest differance is the XT32...

Denon supposedly has more reliability and customer service on their side.

Anything else here that should go to the pro / cons scale?

The 818 is more feature packed, no doubt about it. However, many of the features are not necessary - e.g. THX Loudness Plus is great but it also has Dynamic EQ which performs a similar function. Having said that, the only real drawback to the 818 relative to the 3312 is the 24fps bug - if you've got a display that can display a 24fps signal you may want to look elsewhere. The only significant feature the 3312 has that comes to mind that the 818 doesn't is airplay.

On the other hand, XT32 should be a significant advantage of the 818 and it will likely have more power though not as much of an advantage as it's weight would suggest. Home theater tested the 3312 at 123wpc with 2 channels driven and 80wpc with 7 channels driven, it's likely the Onkyo could do better as the 1009 they tested which has similar weight did 146wpc with 2 channels and 86wpc with 7 channels. Having said that in real wordl terms that doesn't translate into much of an advantage.

I can't speak for the 818's operation but I have both a 3310 and a 3313 and both are much smoother in their operation than my Onkyo 876 - HDMI switching is faster, there's no clicks switching between surround modes and the time it takes to resync when channel surfing between cable channels with different resolutions is much faster on the Denon AVRs.

Interesting nugget regarding the 24P bug (if you're tired of hearing about it move on).

1. Onkyo technical support contacted me about it.
2. They have provided a firmware to "test" to see if the issue is resolved.
3. At first blush, the test firmware looks promising.

I won't reveal more as they have asked for confidentiality (but I did not sign an NDA). I'm interested in working on this problem so I won't piss them off by sharing this firmware.

Another note... yes, the problem exists, at least in some configurations. If it did not they would not be providing a firmware file that is zipped up with a name of "818 24P".

Stay tuned.

good news. hopefully they will use the firmware when ready to the other receivers that are effected by it.

Awesome. Good on Onkyo, all the folks that submitted the bug reports, thanks for helping them out jmpage2

Good job guys. Lets hope it gets fixed quickly so this thread can turn into an onkyo tx-nr818 owners thread rather than people with the 24p bug thread.

Zone 2 trigger to activate a power amp

Thanks so much for this. I got about 90% of the way there, using my 818 with an XPA3 using the zone 3 trigger out I was able to get as far as teaching my harmony remote the IR commands for zone3 power but I was adding a step in each activity to run this command and also run power off when leaving. This was causing the amp to turn off then on when switching actives instead of staying on. Will use your advice which should keep my amp on when switching activities.

It was very clear to me. Do we really need to keep talking about what we talk about? Those discussing the 24p issue are owners of the 818 discussing a problem with the 818. It's a valid topic in an owners thread. BTW I don't see it.

You need to find the discreet on off codes instead of the toggle.

It's a valid topic folks, but it is clogging the thread up.
I've seen several new users come on here and had their question ignored or overlooked in the masses of 24p posts. Why not create a new thread?

What level do you guys normally need to set your volume level to, to deem it "loud"

I'm not sure if Im pushing my amp too hard or not. It seems that I need to get to about 80 before it start to get loud. Is that 80/100 (80 out of 100)? Its not distorting im just worried that im 20 from my max output and its not Huuuuuugely loud. Especially seeing I have the 5.1 Paradigm SE's setup with them...

Also.. When playing AVI's Mp4 etc...as you prob know too well, the voices in movies are a lot quieter than the music..Does anyone know which setting would best complement bringing the vocals out a bit so they are audible and not blasting my ears off when the music cuts in? I have tried a few different presets and not happy with any.
