Video over DLNA will be really nice, but I won't upgrade just bcos of that. I got mine on BF and it is a really good deal so I will use mine for at least 3-5 years when everything is 4k (including media).

Yeah I don't do the yearly upgrade thing so I'll be around here for awhile. Anyone planning to stick it out for a bit?

My last 800X marantz still runs great, 10 years later.

no 24 Bug and gapless audio

Have any evidence? Proof? Magic crystal ball? Or just assuming based on hdmi board failure problems on the 06, 07, and 08 models. As far as I can tell the hdmi issues were corrected on the 09 models.

That is not proof enough? heck even my 609 and 809's have been in service for HDMI issues and my 818 has no main out any longer(failed 2 months into service)

How much more evidence do I need?

I am actually on my 2nd 818 the first one had a loud pop that woke my whole house in the middle of the night while I was enjoying movie credits.

Took it to the reseller and they got on the phone with Onkyo in which they refused exchange, 2 hours in the store later I finally got my new 818 and only after I was about to cancel my installer agreement with said reseller.

Their quality track record is crap since 2006.

We have been using Onkyo for the last 18 years

Interesting in the last few years I have had a 5007, 5008, 3009 and now the 818. I only had a small issue with my first one the 5007 which Onkyo went out of theyre way to fix. Any time I have contacted onkyo for anything they have responded fairly well to great. I have the 818 for a couple of months now and knock on wood I have no issues whatsoever. Including the 24p issue. Not to say I will not do the update when is is issued over the net if it ever is. I have had dennon in the past no real issues. And recently a Sony 5700es which I liked a lot but it had no video processing and had a nice offer for it and therefore went back to onkyo. I am supprised that with all the consistant issues you seem to have had (Nodes) that you continued to purchase the Onkyos. My brother in law has had a 616 for a couple of years now with heavy use and has also not had any issues. Only regret I have had is not getting a 3010 for the opportunit to try 11.2. I do use external amps.

I want to revise my update on the audio dropouts problem since the latest firmware update. It seems like I spoke too soon. In a ridiculous twist, it seems the audio dropout problem when playing back high-res (48/24 & higher) audio files from the NAS still exists -- but only when using the "Home Media" option rather than the DLNA option. rolleyes.gif In other news, Onkyo's networking issues with the 818 persist. The 818 refuses to playback files from the NAS in the correct order when using the "Home Media" option, and while they will playback in the correct order using the DLNA option, the 818 doesn't show any Artist information during playback when using that option (it's there in the metadata, since it shows up in the Home Media option and on every OTHER playback device). It simply shows "Unknown." rolleyes.gif For whatever reason, dropouts don't occur when playing CD resolution files (44.1/16). Actually, I have a download from HD Tracks (Achtung Baby) that is 44.1/24 and even that suffers from dropouts, so apparently the 818 has an issue with the bitrate more than it does the sample rate. Why it happens via Home Media and not DLNA is beyond me. These issues all seem rather pedestrian to fix, considering there are devices on the market that do all of this and more without any issues at all.

Networking features that actually work? Gapless playback? No 24p bug for nearly a year?biggrin.gif

If the 828 had one button access to the Insta-Preview I might actually use it.
My 818 playbacks flac from NAS via DLNA fluently with no drop outs, shows all the info that are in metadata (artist, album, etc.) and also the .jpg pictures including in the same folder.

Just a little nit for me. I have searched the forum, reviewed the manual, etc before bringing this question to the team here. Is there a way to disable the volume level display being sent on the HDMI interface to my TV? Thanks in advance. And please feel free to point out, if this has been discussed, how to better utilize the search function. cool.gif

Finally received my Digital to Analog Converter - that one of you were kind enough to post much earlier - so I can get my ATV2 working in Zone 2 http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10423&cs_id=1042302&p_id=6884&seq=1&format=1&ref=cj#largeimage
I can play the radio in Zone 2 so I assume there is no change needed in my original set up however, I still can't get ATV2 working . I have plugged in the optical cable from ATV2 into the D/A converter and connected the two RCA cables to the Zone 2 line out inputs. The D/A converter is lit and I have tried a couple of different sets of RCA cables and still nothing. I have my ATV2 connected to CBL/SAT input. I only have the one optical cable that I have used since purchasding the ATV2 and used it with my Arcam AVR200 as it did not have a HDMI connection. I unplugged the receiver for a few minutes wondering if that might help and also made changes in 5.1 Listening mode. How likely is the problem with the D/A converter ? Any other suggestions ?

I'm not sure if it's possible to just disable the volume display, but you can disable the OSD in the setup menus which should also disable that.

Yep, the only way I have found so far also. Enabling/disabling the OSD is not a preferred approach if there is a back door that someone has found.

You can disable the OSD. Setup -> Miscellaneous -> OSD Setup.

I want to be able to disable the quick setup display so I can bump the sub up without the wife noticing, but I think that cannot be done. Maybe on SUB out though.

As I said, the dropouts only occur when using the "Home Media" option, not the "DLNA" option. However, for me, I do not get artist information when using the DLNA.Furthermore, the dropouts only occur with high-res, files, not CD-quality files. I also don't get any cover art from either option, if that's what you mean by .jpg pictures. Oddly enough, none of these problems exist (except lack of gapless, of course) when playing back the same files from the same NAS using the Oppo BDP-93 or any other digital media player for that matter. Go figure. This is all via Ethernet as well, which makes even less sense.

That's pretty funny and mirrors my own situation.

If I make an audio adjustment during a movie she always asks, "What are you doing?"

What the fun of owning a toy if you can't play with it!

Needless to say, I prefer to watch movies when she's not around -at least the ones with heavy duty sound tracks.

Its the reason I have a separate 2-channel system in my library and headphones as well.

What is it you are trying to accomplish? The the Zone 2 you have the DA converter connected to is actually a pre-amp output for zone 2 not a zone 2 input.

oops.....Just trying to play ATV2 in zone 2.
Ok, I will hook up the RCA cable to the CBL/SAT input when I get home and report back assuming that is my solution. Curious how the receiver knows how to play HDMI in the main area when RCA cables are also hooked up. Is it just the way that it is when dealing with a zone 2 setup or any set up where you have multiple cables hooked up for the same input ?

You nailed it. Many times during an event, be it Live TV, Movie, etc. I will adjust the volume and the wife gets perturbed now.... "what are you doing". And I haven't played enough to turn off the OSD............

Same here. Unfortunately OSD setting doesn't disable the quick setup display. I have a TX-SR607 that has a better implementation of this. There is an "audio" button on the remote that brings up settings similar to the 818 quick setup but not on the screen. I can see it on the receiver display and make my stealth adjustments on the fly. I'd really like to be able to do that on the 818.

They thought they were hooking us up when the implemented that but really they were causing marital issues, LOL

Hmm, I'm getting album art and artist info using DLNA. I have not tried "Home Media" yet. FWIW, I have album art both as "cover.jpg" in the album folder and saved to the tags of each file. I've used both Media Monkey and Logitech Media Server to serve up 44.1/16 FLAC without problems. I use LMS, since it's always running on a WHS box for squeezeboxes throughout the house. A different DLNA server running on your NAS might fix your issues, if your NAS offers that flexibility.

Why not use the optical inputs on the receiver for your AT2?

Thanks InfernoST for your reply and I was able to solve the problem based on my earlier post.

Unfortunately Zone 2/3 with not play any digital source which is why I needed to purchase this Digital to Analog Converter http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10423&cs_id=1042302&p_id=6884&seq=1&format=1&ref=cj#largeimage

As a FYI, other people closer to the beginning of this thread complained that this device had a constant hum. This is not the case for me.
