I have a question. It seems when I watch Blu-Ray all sound seem to go to 7.1, even when I am watching a movie with 5.1. How do I fix that?

Just found out I will be Reviewing a newer Receiver (can't say which it is yet) soon so I will be selling my "like new" 818 shortly. I will list it next week in the classifieds. smile.gif

When you say "all sounds seem to go to 7.1" can you elaborate? What does the display say and how do you have your speakers configured?

Cant wait to hear what you think about it. I've read some reviews saying that the sub woofer wasn't hitting as tight as some people would have liked. I hope that is not a receiver problem and something not right on the users part.

Anyone know if the 818 would have trouble driving 4 ohm speakers? The speakers have high sensitivity (98 dB) and I don't really listen up to reference level, but would like that ability for sure.

Really don't want to get separates as that means more cash...

I wrote Onkyo USA about just that and they replied yesterday.

They said so long as all my speakers are 4 Ohm and the receiver is set to drive them, it will be fine. You cannot mix 4 Ohm and 6 to 8 Ohm speakers. I have a thing for Magnepans but I have decided to stay with Klipsch for now as I don't have the cash to buy 5 to 7 Maggies for the 818.

I am looking to replace my 805 with either a 809 or 818, mostly for the video processing and extra inputs. I'm pretty ambivalent about XT32 because I already run the sub with a AS-EQ1 that I plan to keep (and it does two subs, which the 818 can't do). I've been reading about both the 809 and 818, but other than XT32 they seem awfully similar. Is the 818 worth $300 more?

When I watch BD movie with DTS-HD 5.1 for example, all the speakers on front LCD panel light up. Even though I have 7.1 speakers set up, if I am watching a movie that is mixed in 5.1 channel, shouldn't the receiver only use 5 speakers with subwoofer and not the entire 7 speakers? On a another note, how many here use Intelivolume and if you do at what volume do you set it at?

Anyone tried the hdmi switch functionality of the 818? When my 818 is off it will display the picture of my xbox 360 and ps3 but I'm not getting any sound, what could be wrong?

Edit: Pull the power cord seems to have fixed it for now, bad firmware frown.gif

Is it supposed to detect what input is being used while the unit is off and automatically switch to that input? On my 707 I had to turn it off with the input I wanted to pass though chosen for it to work no auto detect and switch on it's own.

You have the receiver set up for 7 speakers and PLIIx processing. That is why all of the speaker icons are lit on the front panel during 5.1 channel playback. If you only wany straight decoding you can set it that way in the Listening mode setup menu.

I just assumed it would switch sources in standby but apparently it's not supposed to do that.
Coming from a standalone switch I just figured a receiver with hdmi would act the same, it's not very useful without that option.

Another problem I'm having with the latest firmware is that the osd stops working after a while, I can only use the display on the onkyo then. Only pulling the plug will bring the osd back.

having no issues with the firmware so far. my receiver actually updated twice back to back took about an hour and half, cause i guess my initial firmware was very old. only problem i had is it erased all my audyssey settings so i had to run it again.

does anyone here bi-amp their mains on a 7.1 setup, is it even possible? i was wondering if i choose to bi-amp would i be using the front high or front wide? was asking because in the past i bi-amped using the surround back channels in a 5.1 setup.

edit: never mind, bi-amping will only drive a 5.1, just saw in manual

Just got a loan of a 3009 while my 818 order ships. Was kinda thinking hope it's not going to be disappointment going down to the 818 when it arrives. Seems like i needn't have worried reading through this thread

I have a situation I want to get by people here in the forum to see what you guys think. I was watching Star Trek 6: Undiscovered Country when I noticed that volume seem to go louder to quieter from certain scene to scene. One scene I am hearing clear than next scene I am straining to hear and than next scene it is louder again. Then later, I noticed certain channels on my Direct TV seem to do the same thing. It mostly happens when I am watching a movie opposed to a other forms of programs. Does this seem normal or should I change the receiver? Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks.

So how do you like the 3009? I am monitoring both the 3009 and 818 very closely. The 3009 seems to be slowly dropping in price. If it gets down to $1000 shipped I may jump on a 3009. Right now best price is $1450 shipped.

So, I got my 818 installed today (which took a helluva lot longer than I anticipated) and I just wanted to bring up some very initial observations; I am coming from a Yamaha RX-V1800 that has been a fantastic amp, but it does not do dual HDMI output, lacks really good room calibration, no HDMI 1.4, no DLNA or internet radio, etc.

Unlike many of you I don't have this in a dedicated theater room. I have a large family room that is perhaps 20X22'. Speakers consist of Boston reference center and mains, SVS cube subwoofer, and cambridge rears in my ceiling.

1. With six reference points for Audyssey the sound quality is pretty good. I want the ability for Audyssey to dynamically set the volume so I can listen at lower volume levels and still hear the surrounds, etc. It seems to do this but I'm confused about the settings. Also, my subwoofer does not seem to be nearly as strong with the default Audyssey settings as it was with the RX-V1800... I see an LFE menu in the settings maybe it's something I can adjust.

2. I figured out how to get dual HDMI output working, however I noticed that for the 2nd TV (which is on a patio) there is no audio provided through HDMI, I had to wire analog outputs from my source (TiVo) to the 818 to get audio working out there (through the zone 2 speakers obviously).

3. Sometimes when I turn the TV on in the 2nd zone, both TVs go pink and I have to power off and on the 2nd TV to get the picture normalized. Very annoying. I also see no settings for video for the 2nd screen, it is a small 720P LCD and obviously I don't want it to have the same settings as the large 65" plasma in the family room so this is a confusing point.

3. I could not get the STB/DVR input on the 818 to work in Zone 2. O-remote also does not have a choice for STB/DVR, I had to re-wire so that I was using CBL/SAT instead.

4. DLNA/Pandora work extremely well, even in Zone 2, O-remote really shines for this.

5. The Onkyo remote is TERRIBLE. Really horrible. I actually thought something was broken for a while after I selected a source and the "home", etc, buttons no longer worked (have to hit the "receiver" button again to regain function). I have done initial programming on my Harmony and will have to keep tweaking. I was pleasantly surprised that the 818 was in the Harmony database.

6. One early problem I've hit that I have not found an issue to is, with my TiVo, I have had some really weird problems with the 818. When the TiVo (quad tuner elite model) switches between the on screen menus and the full screen playback there was always a short audio dropout on my Yamaha, but with the 818 I lose audio for a good solid 3-5 seconds, it is really annoying. Also, I get messages on the front of the 818 with many programs that say "resolution error". WTF?

I suppose you could say that the biggest "issue" I have with the 818 is that, even with the manual in one hand and the remote in the other, it is an extremely overwhelming experience trying to set it up... and I'm not even a newb at this... coupled with many of these problems with my TiVo, etc, I am sort of wondering if I made a mistake buying this.... I was expecting to be a bit bowled over with the upgrade, but right now it's very hit or miss for me. Maybe with time I will become more satisfied with it.

That sucks. I will be getting 4 Ohm speakers up front and my surrounds are 6 ohms. May have to go with separates.

Anyone know of a preamp that can do what the Onkyo 818 can do at the same (but preferably less) price point? Audyssey XT32 would be fantastic. I'm assuming I can use the Onkyo 818 as a preamp as well, but would like to save some money on the preamp if I go the separates route.

After contacting Customer Support they came to the conclusion that my unit was faulty so they want me to exchange is. Hopefully that fixes all my problems and hopefully they have another unit for me at the store.

From the manual:

6 ohms:
Select if the impedances of all speakers are between 6 and 16 ohms.
