Onkyo TX-NR818 "official" owner's thread discussion - Page 194

I am also very interested in rworne's work and progress. I don't see a reason for me to root now, but you never know, and the technical aspect of that kind of access into an AVR is very interesting. I think this work is promising. It would be sweet if we get airplay like feature going but I'm sure there are other potential applications. And if not, it's still pretty darn kewl.

Please keep us posted rworne. I'd follow along in a different thread too but it is on topic here and clearly several of us are interested.

Usually I play the files on the NAS straight on the AVR via ethernet and I had mentioned no problem so far after the update.

My mates 818 did not drop off EVER whilst playing small or large and even massive FLAC files. he was only too eager to update the firmware to remove the 24f issue.
we flashed the firmware on saturday and to my utter horror his 818 now jumps much more than mine ever did. the updated firmware HAS totally removed the fault from my 818 and I can now listen
to FLACs without issue.

I really feel for him now as the update cant be rolled back ? or can it ?

Did you have the issue before update ?

So I don't think that that single message a week or so with summary of your progress could do any harm.
While I'm not ready to root my AVR just for the sake of it, I'm really interested what makes it tick.
Please please please keep us updated.
X2 quite interested in what you find, I love knowing the "things we do not speak of".
If I had the means I would be in there like a dirty shirt. Please keep us posted!

I know there is an interest, but the things I found affect all onkyo receivers from 2009 to 2012. It's not an 818-specific thing.

I've also been spending too much time on this over the past couple of weeks and really need to get back to my 1.5.0 update. I'll document it in a new thread perhaps, but it really does not belong in here.

Yes I had it prior to the update as well. It wasn't very annoying though as I finally prefered to use the AVR over ethernet to listen flacs from NAS instead of the media player. Of course this is not the right solution...but I really wonder if this is finally an AVR's problem or mp's problem.
I don't know if we can go to a previous firmware.

You can. I have the sequence to perform this. It's called a forced upgrade, I believe. The sequence is in an email at home that I don't currently have access to... If someone doesn't post it before, I'll post it later tonight.

Found it...

Press and hold the "NET" button on the front of the receiver, then press the ON/STANDBY button. "UPDATE" will show on the receiver's display. Press enter to force the update.

So this will roll back the firmware to the previous version??? Or do you need the previous firmware on a thumb drive.

I haven't tried it, but my understanding is that this sequence will cause it to download whatever code is on the network. I wouldn't be surprised, however, if it would take the USB image (if available).

Since Onkyo didn't publish this new firmware on the network, this sequence will revert the firmware...

I'm not having any issues at present but I will keep this in mind.

Does anyone have any recommendations for iPhone apps that add value to 818 ownership? I downloaded the official Onkyo mobile app and it really doesn't do much and freezes all the time.

Yes, get oremote. It is an excellent way to control an Onkyo AVR. The guy who writes it is also a regular AVS contributor.

+1 on the oremote app. Very good app in my opinion.

+2

when my TV was broken down this app was the only tool to access the AVR options to play NET content interactively.

In my settings the only options I have is to set the speakers to 6 ohm or 4 ohms. No 8 ohm?

I was always told leave your receiver at 8 ohm unless you have heat issues... Now when I switch to 4 ohms (my speakers really are 4 ohm speakers) it seems to drive my speakers better. What do I mean by that... I mean at 6 ohm they seem the same loudness at a 20 setting when at 4 ohm I can get by with about the same loudness at 26-28.

If you have 4ohms speaker's see page 59 in the manual set it at 6ohms if your speaker's are between 6ohms and 16ohms

■Speaker Impedance
􀁠4ohms:
Select if the impedance of any speaker is 4 ohms or
more but less than 6.
􀁠6ohms:
Select if the impedances of all speakers are between 6
and 16 ohms.
i would keep it at 6ohms as you can see on page 59 of the manual

What DSP mode are you using for your heights? I have increased my Height Trim levels to +5 and it made a noticeable improvement. I need to pick up the Hobbit also.

well the 818 is approaching it's life cycle, 24-60fps bug is fixed, and maybe Igor has finally moved on about the audyssey issue he has. not much left to talk about other than mine has been flawless the 4 months I've owned mine.

I'm only using the Onkyo to power my Heights and I'm using 8ohm speakers but I chose the 4ohm option, I would assume by choosing 4 ohms the Onkyo is putting out more current/watts

It's just a fantastic receiver. It's also gone through the typical Onkyo bugfix cycle, though I do know of some bugs I reported nearly a year ago remain unfixed. These aren't complex bugs either - mis counting the items in the top network menu, and clipping the selected network source's name.

I currently own a Panasonic DMP-BDT220 which I use for Blu-Ray and CD playback. I have an Onkyo 818 receiver that this feeds into via HDMI.

I am a tad frustrated with this setup because the tracks are all blank with no titles etc.

Any suggestions? I thought about ripping all my CD's to apple lossless and then just streaming them from my computer to the receiver...but was hoping there was something easier to do?

Is there a function I am missing that the Onkyo can update the tracks somehow?

I also have my Height Trim at +5 as well. Listening node Dolby PLIIz Height THX CINEMA
I WAS a Little disappointed in the story line it was not what I expected after the Lord of the rings trilogy the hobbit was not what I expected can't really put my finger in it. But the sound was great it showed off my 818. I will try it later in 3D.

I was using DTS NeoX but I have been using Dolby PL11z lately, try using a non THX DSP mode...I think it sounds better, THX modes sounds a little flat to me.
