Onkyo TX-NR818 "official" owner's thread discussion - Page 195

I don't think it's possible as your CD player cannot send track information to the receiver.

Actually, ripping your CDs to your computer works well and your music is accessible from everywhere.
Always rip your CD's to a lossless format, I use FLAC files.
Wave files are lossless, but do not contain embedded track information.

I found out early on in this process that the Windows Media Player does not output "bit perfect" audio.
I use J River media player and I'm very please with it performance.

Edit: J River can be used as a DLNA server.

Good luck.

Any suggestions? I thought about ripping all my CD's to apple lossless and then just streaming them from my computer to the receiver...but was hoping there was something easier to do?

Is there a function I am missing that the Onkyo can update the tracks somehow?

Guys,
After all my woes with my 807, This is my fourth unit...3 RMA's from Newegg...(Previously no NET functionality, recent HDMI board issue, currently losing NET connection after every shutdown...and no more Component switching....) Onkyo is offering me a REFURB 818. I must say, that I would be happy, were my 807 working correctly, and I am not fond of Refurbed units...(to me, it's someone else's junk...). I am thinking that they can wash their hands of the refurb, if they say they have "tried". What if there are issues with the replacement? I doubt they will honor anything else.
A couple things I am considering:
Taking the refurb, and selling right away. and purchasing another brand.
Keep my 807 and roll the dice.

I am looking for advice here. What would you do, in my shoes? What are some drawbacks that I may not be considering?
Does anyone have experience with the 818? Is the NET feature any better?
I know it is "supposed" to run cooler. Which can only be a good thing. My 807 is still hot. What about connectivity? Audio Quality? Anything that will help me make a decision.

I would absolutely take the refurb in your situation. Seems like your 807 situation can't get any worse.

Although "refurb" can mean what you've described it to be, refurb can also be a unit that was shipped out missing the am antenna, a dent box, etc.

Take the 818, XT32 man!, XT32...

Kevin,
take the 818. I was offered one for $600, through their 'trade-in' program, for a 707 (also bought as a refurb) that failed after 25 months (13 months out of warranty) and I would've gotten it if I hadn't got in on the $599 deal @ B & H. Point being, they went way out of their way for me, and it looks like they're doing it for you too now. I believe it will come with a 1 year warranty of it's own, and as you and I have seen, they'll work with you to keep you happy.

My 707 consistently ran @ 117 degrees, even if it wasn't playing anything, just left on after CD listening, My 818 hasn't gotten above 86, that was watching Dredd very close to reference level. It's 76* now, in a 66* room, enjoying Pandora at moderate levels... for about 2 hours now.

And, the step up to XT 32 ... fantastic.
Of course, this is all IMO, YMMV...

No sound from any of the Front Left High, or Wide, or the Rear Back Left:

Hey guys, I've been working my way through this thread as much as possible the past several months and jumped on the $650 Newegg deal for the 818 in December. But I was in the middle of moving and am finally getting settled into our new home. I definitely hooked up the 818 in the first week to verify it's functionality and tested the 5.1 speaker setup to ensure there were no issues and everything was great!

However, now that I'm finally setting up my full surround setup in my new house I wired up all of my new Energy Take speakers for 7.1. Trying to see how the new Front High speakers sound. This is where I ran into issues! I have no sound out of the Front Left High, or Wide, or Surround Back Left speakers -- ONLY the Right's work!

I found the configuration and tried various combinations of enabling teh speakers by setting them to the 80hz(THX) crossover setting. I even tried turning them all on and moved a test speaket connection between all the various outputs and definitively proved that I get NO sound from any of the Front Left High, or Wide, or the Rear Back Left --- basically nothing on the LEFT side outside of basic 5.1. But, the Rights DO work on all accounts.

My guess is that I got a bad AMP -- man am I aggrivated and bummed! But thought perhaps I'm misssing something, or some troubleshooting/resetting technique for the receiver that someone else might know of.... looking for any tips?

Or does it look like I'm stuck with a half functioning 818 until I decide to find a local service center?

Does anyone know if Newegg had extended return period for Christmas purchases? I thought I read that somewhere but can't find it now...?

Thanks for any and all help guys!

Dang I'm disappointed....frown.gif

Hi all,

Just updated my TX-NR818 to the latest firmware (2013-02-28) as it would resolve the FLAC issue when played back from USB/network.
Unfortunately I noticed that multi-channel (hi-res) FLACs are decoded as stereo i.s.o. multichannel. In the previous firmware version it was decoded as multi-channel(with the known issues)

Is anyone else experiencing the same problem? Or maybe i missed out something?

Rerun initial setup with the mic i would reset the receiver and set it up again from the begining.
1 Turn on the AV receiver and the connected TV.
On the TV, select the input to which the AV receiver
is connected.
2 Set the speaker setup microphone at the Main
Listening Position 􀁂, and connect it to the SETUP
MIC jack.
and then go from there run the full audyssey go to page 38 of your manual for instructions

Thanks for all the help guys...Also got a similar response in the 807 thread. Keeping my fingers crossed that my days of fighting my receiver are over.

I would download the updates first and then do a reset

This has to be done on the unit and not the remote.

Recheck your speaker connections and hook up only one set of the optional speakers>run Audyssey MultEQ test and see what you have. If you have no signal from the left side Audyssey will find it and give you a 'speaker error' warning. If all goes well add all the speakers you want and rerun FULL Audyssey

I would make sure that they allow you to buy the extended warranty.

Yeah, handled that with Michael, yesterday. How much is it?
I was also concerned that, if I get a refurb that is defective, at the outset, I would not have to fight them to return it.

KMA100:
"So safe to say that 818 can drive 4 ohm speakers without issues?"

You can drive 4 ohm speakers with the receiver, and by using 8 ohm speakers with the 4 ohm option picked all your doing is lowing the voltage to the rails with the switch on 4 ohm. It lowers the power the receiver puts out so it will not overheat with 4 ohm speakers. Switch it back to 8 ohm w/8 ohm speakers.

Great. My speakers are 4ohm 98db so hopefully no issues! Thanks.

So do all you 818 Owners ever turn Dynamic EQ on? It seems to be especially useful when listening at low-medium volume levels. BUT....
Whenever mine is turned on i have fairly loud hissing that is unbearable in movies, and VERY noticeable in music where there are breaks or quiet parts, Without it on the speakers sound a little lifeless with less Depth.
I'm currently not using a sub (will be soon) and it seems that D EQ wouldn't be needed with one, but without a sub and with D EQ off you can tell a lot of the deep parts of music are missing.

Is this something we just have to put up with? Or should i be looking into a power cleaner or another ''issue''?

I already returned my first 818 for this reason and this one does the same thing...
I have Dynamic EQ turned on at all times. You should check where the noise is coming from. Does disconnecting cables from the 818 reduce the hissing?
I notice a hissing or white noise from time to time during silent or quiet parts of a track, but I'm confident it is the CD. I must confirm by seeing if the FLAC ripped from the same media also shows the noise, then I would deduce it was the recording. The noise is not there when no media is playing.

Long time lurker who after going back and forth (Denon? Great deal on Pioneer at Magnolia?) finally decided on the 818 to replace a limping 705 I had purchased off of Ebay. The room correction on this is amazing with just one sweep and I'm wondering if I will really need a sub for my Paradigm Active 40s. The entire forum really helps guys like me, for instance I bought an HDMI splitter after reading the problems a guy had with an older model Panasonic plasma to the Onkyo HDMI output. Maybe I wouldn't have needed it, but with the splitter I've had no glitches whatsoever.
Hi is there a list of all the hidden menus you can access by various front panel button presses. Found a couple by accident but would be nice to have them all.
Even with No HDMI cables plugged in it still Hisses (-20 is perfectly audible similar to a smaller box fan on low), Its still there with D EQ off, But gets quite annoying and loud with it on...
Do you all run Power cleaners?
My house is only 6 years old i wouldnt think im suffering from 'dirty' power, But i would think more on here would notice this issue if there really is an issue with the receiver itself.
Any other cables besides HDMI plugged in?

Actually that is the root of teh problem,I cannot run teh Audyssey calibrarion (per the Manual) because it fails! It fails presumably because NO sound is output from the Front Left Height, but it IS from the Front Right Height. The same result for the Wide. The only way that Audessey calibration completed was when I turned off the Height, Wide, & Rear Backs in the speaker configuration falling back to only 5.1 -- then it completed fine!

So the question is why does the amp powering the Left side of Front Height/Wide or Left Back surround NOT output any sound? I read something about a way to do a Hard Reset of the entire reciever? Would that possibly help? If so how would I try that?

L C R speakers Are the only wires plus the power cable obviously. Otherwise no other source is plugged in.
Definitely is not acceptable sounding, I could MAYBE overlook it if i was buying a cheapish $200 receiver but that not the case.
Do the inputs have memories for audio and video settings per input?

so hdmi input one could have brightness -1

and hdmi input 2 have brightness +2

etc

tried searching, guess I couldn't find the correct wording...

thanks

Mine is there with no media playing at all, even without a source.
