I don't know if this had to do with the gapless fix, but I was referring to the 1-star review titled 24 frame per second bug, ruins the experience.

I've been having a weird issue with my TX-NR818. It seems when I first start it up and use it with my Bell 9242 satellite receiver, after some time there seems to be a serious lag between the 9242 receiver and the amplifier. Whenever I push a button on the satellite remote, say to bring up the guide it takes a good 2 seconds or more sometimes to bring up the guide. Or if I'm trying to fast forward through commercials it takes 2 seconds or more to register the button I've pushed on the remote. This only happens when the amplifier is on and I'm using the satellite receiver through it via hdmi. If the amplifier is turned off and I'm using the hdmi pass through so I can watch tv without the amplifier turned on there is never any lag.

The only fix for this lag problem is to turn the Onkyo amplifier off and then on again and voila no more button lag? I did check for firmware updates and I'm running the latest version on the amplifier. What could be causing this and how can I fix it? I've tried contacting Onkyo and explaining this problem to them but they don't have an answer for me?

Here are some facts I've dug up or know...

1) HDMI 1.4 only supports 4k content at 24 fps
2) HDMI 1.4 supports a TMDS rate of 340 MHz
3) So 4k 24 fps content fits within a TMDS rate of 340 MHz

What's interesting is that the 818 reports a much higher TMDS clock when no output device is connected.

4) Onkyo TX-NR818 reports the TDMS clock of 700 MHz

What does this mean given HDMI 1.4 max is 340 MHz? Perhaps it truly does mean that, if an HDMI cable were to have > 24 fps 4k content the 818 would handle it.

5) Given the 818 indicates such a high TDMS rate as input, one might suspect it can passthrough 340 MHz 4k 24fps content

Nothing conclusive above, just some info that makes me think it may be possible. Too bad very few people have the ability to source 4k content as well as display it!

(BTW, the 818 reduces the advertised TMDS rate when you connect a display. It may be using the value the display supports)

edit: fixed small typed

I am thinking of buying this a/v.
In the previous line of a/v's , onkyo had same important issues regarding quality control/manufacturing issues (hdmi boards , channel sockets etc).
Is this the case with 818 or it isi significally improved?Any knows issues/malfunctions i should now about?
I am aware of the 24p issue , but i think it is fixed with the latest fw , correct?

thanks in advance.

I can't remember reading of any HDMI board failures with the 818 in almost 1 year since its introduction. But, it seems that in previous generations they seemed to show up in bunches near the end of the 2 year warranty.

Correct

thanks in advance.

Quick question. Attempting to use Spotify or Pandora is excruciatingly slow. Both using the onscreen menu and the iOS app. Is this normal or is there a known fix? I have a new 818 with latest firmware, hardwired and using FIOS.

I never thought of it as slow, but the first connection will take a while. After that, songs buffer and queue quite quickly.

What stage is it slow? Connecting or buffering?

Turning on network standby might help here too, if the receiver is stuck on "initializing" every time you go to the NET input.

Yep, network standby is on. Every stage is slow for me. Checked Ethernet connection and I pull down 85mbps at its location. I'll try a reset of the unit. Could this be a hardware issue at all? Thanks.

That's my review and doesn't mention gapless that I recall. I need to update that review at some point because you no longer have to request the FW from Onkyo, you just need to download it from their support page.

I suppose in hindsight I would bump the 818 to 3.5 stars now that they've addressed the 24P issue... however, they lose a star for making me go through hell in my efforts to get it fixed.

Yeah, definitely update it. For some reason I kept thinking this was the issue everyone was talking about here. So I suppose there still isn't a fix for gapless playthrough of music?

No idea as I don't play gapless music through my 818. I have a Squeezebox for that and it does the job perfectly.

The technology has changed so much...Firmware updates started happening roughly 5 years ago - at least at this level of technology and at a more frequent pace. It's actually a good thing and a bad thing. The BAD - The manufacturers can put out a non-fully tested piece of hardware to beat the technology curve. The GOOD - At least the updates can fix issues and/or actually enhance the receivers features. Neither is perfect...but I do prefer the later since a fix is usually in the works and you aren't stuck with a piece of hardware that is just functionally out of date.

Glad to hear it helped.

As for the updates... Well... Your old Onkyo and your Denon probably were not running Linux, didn't have a network stack (for IP communication), and so on. Is this a legit reason for releasing buggy firmware? No. it's simply representative of the state of the industry now.

I'd bet money there will be no more updates to the 818. I'd suggest updating to the latest on their site and be done with it.

FWIW, my upgrade process was:

1) Original firmware
2) Network upgrade to whatever it was they have out there
3) USB upgrade to the 1110-xxxx (24fps bug fix, plus other fixes)

I've not moved to the 1120-xxxx version but don't see any reason for someone who isn't on 1110 to not go there.

IMO, the current state - where it is possible to update FW in the field - is better. Yes, it can encourage a ship-now-fix-later mentality, but those older AVRs also shipped with bugs (although given the lower complexity, probably fewer (less code = less bugs smile.gif)). We just had to live with it, or ship the AVR to a servicing center if the issue was severe enough for the OEM to care. At least now we have the ability to request change, and apply that change w/o incurring any hard costs.

For e.g. I have an older Denon that doesn't handle HDCP properly, there is a FW fix available but I'd have to pay to ship it and most likely pay to have them update the FW because it's out of warranty.

Worked for me. Got to the secure checkout with the discount...Can't do it though. It's an amazing price but I can't justify it since I bought the sony1030 6 months ago. Unreal price and so tempting.

Odd that it worked for one of you and not another. Hmm.

Nice that the mods or site commented out the price from my post. Am I breaking the rules by posting the price? Hmm,

Thanks a lot! The code worked! This is one hell of a deal for this receiver brand new. I also paid $.99 extra to get 3 day shipping. Looks like my home theater system is complete. biggrin.gif

Happy to help all those that want the deal!!

To those having trouble getting it working. Sign up for the (Newegg) email deals and offers first, then try it again. This code only seems to work for those signed up for email notification.

Two forty off of the normal new egg sale price is a GREAT deal. I'm now glad that I didn't setup my 809 this weekend. Glad I read that email today too.
