I don't think the 929 will last 4 years

Anyone know what this new update Marked june 13 is or what it fixes?

http://us.onkyo.com/Downloads/firmware.php?source=globalnav

EDIT:

The 6/13/2013 update will address the following: AVAILABLE VIA USB ONLY

1. Improves operation when HDMI Through is set to ON;
2. Corrects playback error problem of streaming audio to Zone2/3 from the music library in the phone when using Onkyo Remote2 App for iPhone / iPod, and Onkyo Remote App for Android;

Nothing really.

A remote exploit allowing the erasure of flash memory, running of arbitrary code, etc. Full root access to the underlying filesystem using only a web browser.

I posted about this months ago here and notified Onkyo of it at the same time.

If you have yours behind a router, there's nothing to worry about.

Why on earth would he destroy any good will between himself and Onkyo by doing that?

I'm new to the 818 club and am hunting a pair of height speakers on ebay to match my other 7.

The limited reviews on adding the height channel seem to be a very mixed bag and Audyssey themselves seem to promote width speakers as more impactful that height. With my theater layout adding height is very practical but width not at all practical.

My initial impression is that my front soundstage sounds bigger and taller, like a wall of sound (think IMAX) is in front of me. I can't speak to the fine details of the sounds coming from the heights as I have not spent much time with them yet. My front speakers are relatively tall. The tweeters are three inches higher than ear level on my front row seating. The tweeters on my heights are four feet higher than my mains, and I cannot aim them down towards the MLP. I am concerned that I will not get the full effect of the heights with this setup. IOW, while they make the front soundstage seem taller, I won't be able to discern distinct sounds from above such as fly-overs, etc. I plan on spending the next two days running sweeps, tweaking, and watching movies; so more will be revealed.

My 805 has lasted 6.5 years and the only reason I have to replace it at some point is to get updated and more HDMI inputs. I'm hoping my next receiver at least lasts another 5 years before I need to replace.

Yes, that is the point.

I told Onkyo I will not divulge the exploit until they have time to fix it. They treat me pretty lousy as is, I don't want to give them a real reason to dislike me.

Onkyo treats everyone lousy, I just can't fathom why, for all you have done for the community, that they don't embrace your APP, and either approach you to assist in their application, or to actually assist them in their Networking process...
The do themselves a disservice.
(might I add, I just downloaded your app, and love it...my iphone is a work phone, and until now have avoided putting outside apps on it, I couldn't take it any longer...with all the rave reviews.)

An exploit like that would be very useful to the "community". You should share it. For starters, the security hole would be fixed quickly, secondly, like the AppleTV, it's possible all sorts of features could be added, such as this all important gapless playback that everyone is angry about.

I've always wondered if the 818's processors are powerful enough to run a stripped down version of xbmc ala OpenELEC.

Would you buy the 818 or wait for 828?

I had an issue with a TV that would allow HDMI through once you turn it on, but once you switched everything off and on, you would have to disable and enable HDMI through for it to work. I can't say if that was fixed, possible though.

The 828 is worse than the 818, so buy the 818.

I've already shared it. A tethered version that has no security issues. All you need to do is get ahold of a $4 adapter off of eBay - or better yet, a Bus Pirate and connect it to the debug port. You get a full serial console with root access there.

Per the board's rules, i refrain from advertising it. I will answer direct questions about it and if I do refer to it in an unsolicited manner, I refrain from mentioning its name. Since you asked, it's oRemote.

I need your expert advise here. I know that the new Onkyo receivers are more in the bright side making it sound more detailed and dynamic; for some reason I encountered some scenes with distortion on a movie particularly on loud scenes. Distortion is not present on all movies I tried, but overall my system sounds bright.

So I tried using a headphone (on the receiver) and there was no distortion, I tried with my old receiver still no distortion, then I used my htib and guess what, still no distortion, I even tried using just the TV speakers and same result, NO DISTORTION. So I thought there's something wrong with the unit, maybe a lemon or something so I brought to the a service center, but since it's been more than a month, they did not replace the unit, instead I left it there for testing. They called me after a few days and they said that there's nothing wrong with receiver, everything is fine according to the tech.

My concerns now are the ff:

1.Is it possible that since the new Onkyos are more detailed it produces all sound including distortion? ba na since medyo detailed yun bagong Onkyo nilalabas nya lahat even mga distortion? But how come it's
not present when I tried other devices (HTIB, old Onkyo, etc.)
2. Should I request to check the internals (capacitor, transformers, etc.) of the receiver?

3. Do you have any other suggestion to isolate the problem?

Thanks for the help

I have followed the instructions as I see them, even watched videos on Youtube, how to copy the folder & files to USB

I find all the settings & on screen icons as they say, the current firmware number is as they say it needs to be before updating

I just can't find exactly where it is to click that final step to begin the update, very frustrating

When selecting the USB, I can see the name AVS... for the folder, go back and across to Update Firmware, that just brings up the current firmware number

But nowhere to select update???????? So I'm thinking it is not recognizing the USB, even though I can see the name of the folder, all I can work on for now...

Will reformat the USB, try the files again, wait for suggestion, thanks

John

Still no joy - nobody has any ideas?

Thanks, John

When using the 818 's Zone 2 / Zone 3 feature for a two channel stereo setup, is it possible to incorporate a powered sub and turn it into 2.1? if so, how would you do it? Thank you very much.
