I have been trying to figure out this for a while. I use a Logitech Harmony remote to turn on my 818 and the various boxes with it. I press the watch tv button and it turns my 818 on and the tv. It goes to turn the 818 to the cable/ sat input like it should and i see and hear the tv and see my picture, but then it automatically turns it to TV/ CD. I then have to grab my 818 remote and switch it back to cab/ sat like it was on already.
Is there a setting thats turning everything to tv/cd when i turn it on? I don't have anything even plugged into tv/cd. This happens when i try to turn anything on...it's not just the tivo. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Check your harmony settings carefully and see if there is anything. I have a similar setup with TV on cable/sat and CD on tv/cd inputs and never had issues with either one.

Interesting. I will see what I can find. It seems like the receiver is automatically changing everything to tv/cd around 5 seconds after the it switches to the correct input. Don't understand how the harmony would turn it to the correct input, only to change it to tv/cd 5 seconds later? Is there any setting that tells the 818 to turn to tv/cd every time you turn it on? I left it on the setting that tells it to return to the last input. But I never use tv/cd...??
Thanks

I'm not really sure what this reply means, but here it is, along with my response:

Re: Unable to Utilize "Selecting Speaker Layout"

Hello:

I am attempting to properly configure my 818 for 9.1 ch playback. According to page 49 of the manual, I should be able to toggle between SB/FH, SB/FW and FH/FW by using the SP button on the remote. This assumes a proper configuration before getting to this point, which I believe I have done:

I am using the preout to and external amplifier for my FW speakers, and I have selected Front Wide in the speaker setup menu.

My "speaker type (front)" is set to normal.

I do not have Zone 2 or 3 connected, and the Powered Zone 2/3 setting is set to "No."

I am using the PL II Movie DSX listening mode.

I simply want to select SB/FW, as that is my configuration, but I keep getting an error message when I try.

There is sound coming out of all 9.1 speakers simultaneously. And all related speaker/channel indicators are lit on the display. But whenever I try to use the "SP" button on the remote, I get the message "not available."

I am just wondering what is happening and whether I have something configured incorrectly.

Any light you can shed on this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Just Nick

If you select Front Wide for the External Amp section, then you will need to enter the SPEAKER CONFIGURATION menu and make sure that Front High is set to a crossover (Ex. 80 hz) and scroll down to make sure that Surround Back is set to a crossover (Ex. 80 hz). After verifying that, then you should be able to press the RECEIVER mode button and then SP Layout button to select between SB/FW or FH/FW (Front wide will always have to be used since it is selected under EXTERNAL AMP section. Check that and let us know if that solved your issue.

Here is my response:

Thank you Moderator 5:

Since I do not have front high speakers connected, Audyssey detects this and does not allow me to set a crossover for the nonexistent front highs. As for the front wides and the surround rears, these do exist and are detected by Audyssey. And I have adjusted the crossovers for both of these sets of speakers to 8o Hz.

Any other thoughts or suggestions?
Thank you again for your response.

I still like JD's response much better.
Let's see if Onkyo follows up.

I would redo all your harmony activities and read carefully what it turns on and what inputs it selects.

Hi Scubasteve03, if you're using a Harmony remote, turn off HDMI-CEC feature on the tv (Samsung - AnyNet+, Panasonic - Viera Link, Sony - Bravia, etc...)

I did that after you suggested it. Everything is still acting the same. When I turn the tv turns on, it goes to the correct input. But then 5 seconds later, the 818 changes the input back to tv/cd even when the remote is covered up. It seems like the receiver is changing the input by itself somehow. Does that make any sense to anyone?

Just Nick,

If I remember correctly you have full 9.1 with front wides, correct? If you want your "sp" toggle to work follow these steps:

1) On your remote, go to Home-> Setup->Speaker Configuration (menu 2-2) and make sure that you have Front High, Front Wide, and Surround Back all set to either a crossover frequency or full band.

2) Play something. Put on some 2 channel music and on the remote go to "Setup"-> "Listening Mode" and switch it to DTS Neo:X Music

3) Hit the SP/Guide button on the remote and tell me what you see on your Onkyo's display

Who was a big loser, getting home from work only to drink vodka tonics, complain about the heat wave, and not even enter his HT?

That's right.

I will report as soon as I do it.

Hello Paul:

If your question is whether you can use an external amp to power the main R & L speakers, and use the 818 to power the rest, including surround speakers that bring you up to 9.1, the answer is no. For 9.1, using one external amp in addition to the 818, you must use the external amp to power one of the surround pairs(fh/fw/sb).

I hope this helps.

Hi, Just Nick tks for your reply. I got it so if I want to play 9.1 I have to connect ext amp via ext amp jacks only and select FH FW or SB.

One more question if I use 5 Channels ext amp. drive Front + Center + Front Height(via ext.amp.jack) 5 channels and can I still use internal amp 818 to drive another 4 Channels 2surround and 2surround back? Thanks again smile.gif

This. HDMI-CEC wars between manufacturers. You might be able to set your Harmony with a delay turning on your AVR, but unless you need HDMI-CEC (ARC probably only benefit) then I'd turn it off, what I did.

I believe the answer is yes. I was assuming a 2 channel amp. Since you could use the 818 as just a pre/pro and have external amps do all of the amplification, I don't see why you would be prohibited from doing what you propose. Since I am fairly new to the 818 myself, I would feel better if someone more knowledgeable on this thread would verify. Good luck Paul.

Yes you can.

I run 2 amps off my 818...it is now a big HDMI switch with built in XT32 smile.gif

When using the Harmony remote you want to turn off all CEC on all devices.

There are certainly cases where CEC highlights issues with component interaction, but it is not good general guidance to disable it when using a universal remote.

I have it on and use a Harmony.

Because of the way I have my viewing area laid out (seating is ~proper viewing distance for my display) the coffee table makes it difficult for IR to hit the AVR (at the bottom of the cabinet), so I use CEC to pass audio commands to the AVR (i.e. programming the Harmony to use the TV's vol/mute) and ensure that when the TV turns off, it also turns off the AVR. If you use devices that support CEC, it also becomes possible to remove them from view using the same technique (programming the remote to use the TV's IR) for a cleaner install.

If your components have issues with EDID detection (e.g. some AMD GPUs don't support "hot plugging" HDMI). Enabling CEC can help because it keeps the connection (EDID) live even when everything is "Off".

Also, one of my favorite unsung features of the 818 is that it acts as an IP-to-CEC bridge. Which means that it is possible to use Onkyo's apps as a universal remote with the right equipment (mixing in other equipment requires specific protocols to be built into the app, which AFAIK only my WP app supports).

I'm in the process of setting up the 818, an Oppo 103, DVR and Samsung PN64F8500 HDTV. I heard of audio handshake problems with video when connecting audio to the 818 and from the 818 to HDTV. Some have mentioned using optical cable to remedy the audio handshake problems. What has been your experience and what would you recommend as connections? Has anyone noticed any appreciable difference in audio quality between HDMI and optical?

With Optical you are limited to 5.1, Dolby Digital or DTS.

Thanks. I have a 5.1 system. What is the best recommended setting (Dolby Digital, DTS, etc.) for listening to movies, streaming music and television broadcasts? Or, do I need to change the setting for each type of audio source? In other words, should I be concerned by using the optical by limiting myself to Dolby Digital and DTS for my listening preferences?

Even if you have a 5.1 system, you should stick with HDMI if possible. This will allow bitstreaming lossless Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio from blu-ray sources to the receiver. So if you don't actually have handshake issues, try first with HDMI.

Hey all,

Been having some startup problems with the receiver/FIOS QIP7232 2 DVR.. Not all the time, but lately sometimes no signal, sometimes no audio but video is fine. I just turn it off and restart until it works.

Anyone else with this situation? I have not updated the receiver software since I got it last year.

Thanks in advance!

Unplug the DVR for 5 minutes to reset itself if that does not work next would be resetting the Onkyo.
Thanks for the reply. Yeah, resettting the DVR is always a good thing. I will do that..

Since all other Inputs are normal to this point, I would like not to have to reset the receiver as getting a quiet house is near impossible to run the Audassey.smile.gif

Sent my unit back to repair optical audio problem (second repair in 3 weeks). Came back fine. Everything worked. Sitting down enjoying a movie when I hear a pop and the unit shuts off! Message on front of receiver says check speaker wires. I had just calibrated and all speaker wires firmly connected but the unit was extremely hot. Called tech support. They told me to unplug everything and wait one hour. Did so and turned it back on. All I hear is a fan running, see Volume level and then unit shuts off! I've just about had it! Called tech support and they advised me to call Onkyo Parts to see what they can do. I'm going to push for either a replacement or upgrade to 929. Very disappointing.
