I am installing a new 818 reciever in my hometheater and it's givieng a strange error in XT32 setup...alll the speakers but the front 2 Bps show up after the first pass of the tones, and thats as far as it will go,says "retry or cancel " . Ive try-ed various troubleshooting, swapped polarity on the front 2,unhooked the back side of the Bps, [their bi-poller].different Mic,etc. I even swapped the front right and the center on the back of the receiver, the problem followed the speaker now the Right showed up but no "cent:eek:er" any idea"s
post #7772 of 9512
Do the speakers work without running the auto setup? are you sure wires are connected properly?

Sounds like an issue with the FL/FR speakers. If not external, then likely an internal wiring issue. Visually inspect the speaker cable wiring at both ends. If still no joy, then I'd give Def Tech a call for repair.

Reset the unit? hopefully it is nothing but a software glitch.
Done did the reset,no difference...:-{ .The speakers work and sound fine, they just show " error" on the setup screen on the Audyssey setup read out one the first screen after the inasille scan. I thought maybe the front chip was bad but like I said I swaped the wires for the RF and Center speakers on the back of the 818 and then it read the center that was hooked up tothe RF output but not the BP30 hookedto the center ?The sound is great but the XT32 was the main attraction to upgrade from my old reciever

Try different speakers at the failing location.

How does your system work with the speakers configured as 2.0 or 2.1?
system works fine, just wont give me the audyessy setup,ie the speakers all work and sound fine,I can manulelly setup distance, crossover, ect just won't work with the audyssy

since you moved the speaker to a different output and the problem followed it would seem Audyssey is having issues hearing your speakers.  not sure why though

Are the tweeters ok in the failing speakers?

You will get the sound squawk from the XT32 setup but it won't detect the speakers correctly.
Had the same problem in the past, an error from Audyssey and guess what , 2 blown tweeters i did not know. Bought these speakers from Ebay and during the Audyssey setup it came up with errors on the front speakers. Thanks mr. seller.........

I am still having issues with my 818s HDMI imputs. After a while the volume tapers off a d gets weak. I can take the same source and put into another imput and the volume triples. Problem is that I am running out of inputs. I am getting ready to reset the entire unit and see if it is corrected and was suggested to me. The only other option is to ship it to Michigan from La. For service since that's the closest. For one thing there's no telling how long it will be gone and if it can be fixed. Then the shipping cost of this monster! Hoe the reset works but I hate to lose all my settings.

I set up my 818 and connected it to the Internet via wireless to use pandora, spotify, etc to stream music. Everything worked fine. I logged in last week and checked my wireless status and it shows connected at 84 pct but when I try to log into any of my spotify or other music accounts, I get an error message which tells me to check my accounts. I refreshed the wireless connection and also checked my accounts and the accounts are correct in terms of username and password.

Anyone else experience this issue and know how to resolve it?

new 818 owner here. picked up a refurb reasonable.

i tried several receivers before settling on this for now.

I was looking for something that would do music well along with movies. I was willing to go $2000, but really unless you spend $4500 or so seems like none of the mid-range AV receivers do music very well.

a friend has an older Denon 5803 (5308?) with mods (XT32) that does very well for music, about 4.5K tho, and the mod was $1K plus install.

next I tried an Marantz 7008, it was a bit more musical, but not the sound I was looking for. thinner in the bass, highs were better, still..no cigar, sent it back.

I needed something to watch movies at this point, so i picked up an 818 and it's my favorite of all of them with my Usher S520/S525 setup. they are not expensive speakers, but with the Ushers I can easily hear the difference in amplifiers. it was pretty drastic.

still not exactly what i would like, the 818 bass is just a tad fat, and the highs are not smooth and airy as I have heard on my speakers, but this was with 3k-4k of 2-channel electronics. still, it's the most musical of all the 2k or less receivers I have tried.

The XT32 on the 818 didn't seem to clean up the bass hump in my room as well as the Denon/Marantz did. Audyssey sets my xover for 40hz. i can mess with that.

for music late at night I use Direct or Pure mode anyway. Is there a way to just go to Pure or Direct mode or do I have to cycle through all the different surround modes?

strange how in Pure mode the HDMI still outputs a signal to the TV, I figured it would shut down all video completely.

I am considering the 929 at this point.

How will the 818 pass through a 4k signal? i thought the 818 couldn't do that..

You do know that pure and direct do not use audyssey right, therefore no eq at all in those modes.

there is a way to save the settings I cannot recall how though, but only issue with that is if the problem/glitch is in your settings then it might return after a factory reset.

Hit the home button on the remote, select listening mode, music, left or right arrow till you get to Pure Audio. Then push enter to set the mode.

You can also use the Onkyo app if you have an iPad or iPhone, great app! I do not know if it is in the Android store or OT.

my iPad is loaned out to a friend in a hospital, may try that later. i may just program my harmony remote to several activities, and have one a direct or pure mode. looks like a way to do it after looking over the setup. liking the 818 so for.

I know it's still way to early to tell yet on the likeliness of hdmi board failure with the 818, but has there been any reports of such. mine is still going strong. I use it every day with at least 6-8hrs of operation so it has some hrs on it.

818 initial setup questions:

Here's a noob question: I might have others later, some of them definitely embarrassing, but I am stuck at a very preliminary stage of set-up (audyssey multeq xt 32), and the manual does not always offer me any straight answers on a number of issues so I thought I should just come here and ask the experts, or those who know more about this machine than I do:

Here is the first question: I am trying to do the initial audyssey speaker set up with the speakers wired to an external amp (En Emotiva xpa 5)...

I notice, first of all, that I cannot use any 12 volt triggers on the 818 to turn the amp off and on... Is that normal with the 818?

Is there any workaround for this? I am soon going to get a Logitech Ultimate harmony Universal remote: does anyone know whether it can turn an Emotiva xpa 5 off and on?

i have a question to all u nr818 owners, i own one too as many of u know(iv been very active during the beginning stage of this thread, and i was thinking about 4K TVs, so are we all basically screwed in regards to 4k? because our nr818 can't passthrough a 4k signal, so how are we going to make the switch to 4k? seems like we'll need to get a new receiver..
Quick question,

I am running my htpc and directv through a Lumagen 2021. I am having an issue with not being able to cycle thru sound format. It seems to stay on THX. Dolby digital IIx and PCM is also lit. I can't get to DTS HD and the like.

Is it the PCM setting? Lost!

Yeah this would be easy to do with the Harmony and use it over the cumbersome ipad.

Yes you can you setup the xpa as a zone 2 or zone 3 and it will turn off. Please google onkyo trigger setup and it has step by step directions.

Do we not have passthrough 4k, I could of sworn I seen something in the menu's one night.

Edit: I think it only upscales to 4k....bummer eek.gif

Does upgrading the firmware wipe out the Audyssey settings or any other settings?
Nope. I just upgraded to the latest firmware and it kept everything as it was before.
