That upgrade would be purely out of gluttony. Your right the Onkyo makes a fine preamp in fact a pretty good one. The main reason I bought it was the xt32. My main issues are that with onkyo themselves. I believe if one reads the website no mention is made of this receiver not containing the sub features of Audyssey xt32 so that is my first issue with them and secondly this amp is not 4 ohm rated like the site says. It is modified to be protected from 4 ohm loads and that is deceptive in my opinion. so in buying this amp strictly from onkyo's info I expect a full xt32 not a modified one and because it is modified they need to inform me of that up front. I believe a person should be able to trust the manufacturer and onkyo I have very little trust in. Their practices are right in the grey area of illegal. They do change the wording slightly for the 4 ohm thing ie continuous and certified performance and I think the wording is specifically to cover their asses. Regarding the Audyssey XT32 I don't believe they make any mention at all of the lack of multi sub support. They may say on the models above it that is is included but make no mention of the lack of it and it is a standard feature of XT32 so it has been removed from the 818 versus being added to higher end amps. I have never had an experience like this with an audio company and I believe people should be upset about their very well sculpted deception. If people are fine with this type of business practice so be it but I will not do business with them again. So the long and the short of it is your right I may just purchase more amps and use the 818 as my pre.
