Vizio M3D550KD - Page 20

So i contacted with Vizio and they told me to send them pictures about problem which was extremely hard to capture because it is hard to capture by a regular camera. While time i figured out this distortion with blu-ray movies started giving me headache. So i contacted with them again with carefully taken pictures and video uploads they said they will send a repair guy after like 6-7 chat sessions discussion.

After couple week i contacted them again and they said its not repairable so they send an exchange unit. After i got exchange unit i realized this distortion is not about a bad unit it is about this serie of tvs quality. Because exchange unit had same distortion and another extra problem which is high pitched noise which was more annoying than distortion. I contacted with support again and this time they didn't give me hard time and offered me M3D470KD model instead M3D421SR model because they didn't have that model at that time. After rep told me that only the difference is response time which is 421sr has 5ms and 470kd has 5.5 ms it looked like a jackpot to me so i accapted that offer and my TV came couple days ago. First of i realized the rep didn't told me that this tv is not bluetooth compatible. This is a major turn off for me because i spent lots of money to buy a bluetooth headphone only for watching tv while laying without disturbing my roommate next room.

Other than this as you said this tv has another problem now which is too much blooming or light leakage when there is a black background and small white object in the middle. It is like led bulbs are leaking light all around this object . Especially when casting part of the movies it is so clear. My M3D421SR didn't have that much blooming, it had some but it was acceptable.

What do you suggest me to do? Which model should i ask for them to exchange? Is everybody getting this blooming thing with M3D470KD s? I am frustrated with contacting Vizio support, and if there is any model close to M3D470KD with bluetooth function please let me know so i can try to negotiate with support to change it with that model. I thing M3D550KD has bluetooth option as an addition however it looks like it has same blooming problem with 460KD i assume this serie has this problem. Please let me know and waiting your suggestions before take any action.

Buy the KD either 47 or 55. Best set they have made to date. I controled all my issues with minor tweaks.

I got the VIZIO M3D550KD today at costco for $699.96 (floor model) .... I wasn't looking for a 3D tv at all but for the price and size it's a ridiculous deal. gonna return the Samsung 40inch 5000 series that I got at costco 2 months ago for $450. Picture looks very solid and the passive 3D is actually pretty solid... the samsung had a RIDICULOUS amount of motion blur that this one doesn't seem to suffer from.

hmmmmmm, quick question. I'm connected to the TV via HDMI on my ps3... playing dragon age origons and on volume 35.... when the characters voices raise up to higher pitches the speakers sound like they are distorting... it sounds scratchy and a metallic distortion to it. the distortion gets worse if you push it to "surround" mode in the setup menu rather than standard... bad tv speakers or is this some common issue?

Wait this TV has speakers?.?.?. Get a surround sound system or a sound bar, TV speakers are all not that good co common issue.

lol, a soundbar is in the works, this is just a spare bedroom TV so I wasn't worrying too much about a sound system right now... just using the tv speakers till I find a decent soundbar.

I figured out the problem though. the treble needed to be cranked down, once that got dialed in from default the distortion went away

although I have the sound quality figured out I think I'll be returning it anyways.... I don't think I can live with having a Vizio TV with their known horrible reliability issues. all it took was an evening on HDguru and here on AVS to see that they have a ridiculous failure rate (I believe the term used around them was "disposable tv" that dies in 2 years or less on average). as much as I LOVE the 55 inch screen over my 40 inch samsung at least with samsung I have a much better chance of my TV surviving past warranty
post #577 of 674
That's the first I've heard about Vizio's being unreliable. Anyone else familiar with this?

Not I, this had me confused too.

if they are reliable I take it back, I've just seen a MYRIAD of threads over the years saying Vizio is the throwaway tv that tends to break just month out of warranty etc etc etc...I bought the square trade warranty from costco for $59.99 but I guess I'm just second guessing myself worried that I bought something that's gonna crap out on me in a few months to a year or so

Why did you buy the warranty if you don't think you want to use it? I am confused - you think it will crap out so you get the warranty but then you say you're taking it back cause you think it will crap out?

If it does crap out that's what the warranty is for right?

lol, nah, I always buy the warranties from costco when I buy a tv out of desiring to cover my bases... like I said, I just hate buying crap products and have to deal with horrible CS, warranties etc etc... but as you said, as long as they're reliable I can live with some of Vizio's picture quality quirks... the price was just too ridiculous to pass up ($699 for a costco open box complete with everything but the packaging)...

I just did some browsing through some of the threads around here and on hdguru and htshack and got a tad nervous with all the vitriol aimed at them

Use the Forum Search. All tv's have issues. It just seems that Vizio owners are more vocal about Customer Support, repairs, and overall quality than other owners.

Plus I am sure that some of it is people justifying their more expensive purchases of higher "quality" brands.

I don't understand why you would buy an extended warranty at Costco. They already give you 2 more years above the manufacturer's warranty.
They've always been really good with no questions asked returns.

What happens if 3 and 1/2 years down the road a capacitor fails paying 50-100 dollars not vs $300 for the repair at a shop is a sound deal to me. But then again you may never use the warranty is just a safety net.

actually they don't give you two years above the mfg warranty. they extend the mftg warranty to 2 years TOTAL. and their return policy is only 90 days...the square trade warranty makes it 5 years TOTAL

So I just had my firmware updated to 3.12.1 out of no where and it reset everything on my TV. The picture didnt work until I did a full setup again. Not sure whats different but curious if it happened to anyone else and if they know what the changes are. On other forums I heard Netflix is revamped and works better but thats all I know.

My set also updated today to 3.12.1, but from what I can remember about the way I had it set, it did not reset everything.

So on a side note, I was looking at another forum and people were saying that the "soap opera" affect came back while they still had "Smooth Motion" off. Basically, after some messing around you just have to make sure "Real Cinema Mode" is set to off. Before you could simply turn off the smooth motion and the real cinema mode wouldnt matter but it looks like it does now. That and the netflix fix are about the only things Ive noticed.

The KD set has issues...... for sure. But ive yet seen any review or forum post claiming their set has stopped working or panel has failed. So ill stay checking in here to post any serious hardware issues. So ill enjoy it till it stops. Not enough time has passed to really tell how long any led will last in the long run. It took many years to perfect crt tubes to last 20 plus years for your moneys worth.

yeah, I notice the flashlighting more than anything on load screens, but otherwise it shoots a very nice picture... I think I'll keep it for now... costco has a 90 day return period so I'm not worried about it

only weird thing was when I loaded up Men In Black III on blu-ray today it started having flickering blue horizonatal lines across the screen. most noticeable on black screens but if you looked they were in the light scenes too. only thing is when I stopped the disc my ps3 menu had NO flickering lines whatsoever, only when I played the disc. I ejected it and put the disc in and the lines were gone (hasn't happened on any of the dozen discs I tested so far).... any idea what that was??? tv related? player related? bad signal from the cable??

even with the flashlighting though, for $699 for the KD (not KDE) this tv is one of the best values for your buck out there. I don't use 3D that much but it's cool to have it

That sounds ps3 hdmi decoding issues. I had that issue on my Sammy upstairs with the old fat ps3. Not with the slim on kd. It stopped doing it after awhile. If it does it again post a pic I would like to see it

yeah, I was wondering if it was cable related, this is a brand new cable I've only had a month... I swapped it back for an old cable... it was really weird, like flicering horizontal lines that flickered in and out of existence at random over the screen. none of them went ALL the way across though, 1/2 to 2/3 of the length of the screen. And once I went to the ps3 menu it vanished, reinserted the disc and all good. I was just being ubber anal about it being that the Vizio is only a week old and I haven't had much experience with it's quirks (or failures) yet
post #596 of 674
Right on........understand the quirky stuff. Was wondering because I use ps3's in almost every room. Hopefully its gone for good!

Hello friends,

I hope everyone is well. My very first post here, and even more important than that my very FIRST HD purchase. I own HD screens on my laptop, phone, and etc, but nothing really that deals with visual performance/experience like this TV would.

So please treat me as a BELOW NOOB level frown.gif...

With that said, couple of questions:

1. NO firmware update on this set EVER got you guys an Internet Browser on this TV, right?
2. Right out of the box, are there recommended settings I can use without calibration DVDs and etc? If so, can you please link me to it?

3. Last question and perhaps THE most confusing topic for me is. What is the BEST way to successfully watch Downloaded 3D titles on this TV? Please keep in mind that I don't own a 3 Blu-ray player, a PS3, or any other Media Server device. I do own a large external drive that I hope I can use with the set, but I am assuming that the format will not be supported by the TV, or even if it is, it will be too laggy and un-watchable?

So, with all those circumstances above, can someone give me the cheapest step by step guide to watching downloaded movies on the TV? I also own a laptop with an HDMI out in it.

Thank you very much for reading and your help in advance!

As for the adjustments for PQ. Many people have posted their personal preferences. Costco reviews have 2 decent combinations and THIS avs thread here has some decent. I just took a persons and tweaked it to my preference. I believe he rambles about Xbox 360 settings a lot.

Only a 3d graphics card for gaming and such will feed 3d files through a media player. They're large and mine is in my desktop. Alien ware.....laptops have the capabilities. But other than a 3d graphics card.......not going to happen.

Tv will not support most av formats for 3d. The ones I have got to recognize are choppy. ..... dead end there.

No vizio I have ever seen or heard of on the market has a web browser. Nor are will we likely see one on a update in my life time.

Long story short, ps3 is cheap and will solve most of your wants. Its browser is o k and supports 3d files. Or depending on your graphics card situation ....hdmi your laptop/desktop up to her.

THX just released an app for your phone to help you tweak the image. Also I have 2 or 3 settings I posted on this board check those out.

As for getting to watch 3D on your new set I would just use the media off a thumb drive or even your PC and you will manually select the 3D mode. Also look into Plex for you PC to make movie viewing more enjoyable with a 10 foot interface.
Anyone had a problem where the vizio wouldn't respond to remote or even the control buttons on the side? That happened to me last night. I had to power cycle it to get it working again.
