Old Phast/AMX system - want to gut, but....

I have an old Phast/AMX system that I want to replace. We initially invested about 70K in installation, hardware and software and I now have a system that is no longer supportable. This became apparent when I found out that in order to add a new piece of hardware, I would require an installer to come in and program (AMX system will not load codes without special equipment).

Now, I am looking to replace the system, but want to do it on my own. I do not want to get into bed with another proprietary system. I want to get something that will allow me to control my own destiny if you will. I have a good strong IT background and was able to program new functionality into my older AMX system.

What are my options? Any recommendations? Ideally, I would like to use the existing transport system (CAT5), but will entertain other ideas provided it does not require me to install new cables, transport,etc...

depending on the level of integration you want, you could look into a generic tablet based solution. I think iRule can control most equipment form an iPad. I personally use eventGhost on my home server to send commands to equipment using scripts that i wrote myself. I can control my lights, audio and video gear all from my iPhone. including selecting media for playback. It may not be as seamless as something like an AMX or Crestron system, but it was inexpensive and put together from easily obtainable hardware.

If this is just for a theater, not a whole house, I agree that a tablet solution, using iRe or CommandFusion and some Globsl Cache interfaces can do the trick. Especially if you want to DIY. But a URC remote with their control unit is also a viable choice as long as the dealer gives you access to the SW...
