16 foot wide screen...?

Hi:

I am now looking at a 16 foot wide screen (not 16 feet measured diagonally).

I am looking at a Stewart Cine-W (curved) AT screen with the StudioTek 130 G3 material with micro-perf.

I figured as long as I am going to build a brand new home theater, I might as well do it right the first time.

Especially after reading this article here:

I originally had planned a 14 foot screen in a 18' wide x 26' long x 10' high home theater.

Now that I have decided to go with a 16 foot wide screen, I am changing the room dimensions to 20' wide x 28' long x 10' high (there will also be a projector room that will house all the audio equipment as well) - to be confirmed with a home theater designer , of course.

At a 16 foot wide screen, I realize that I have narrowed down my choice of projector considerably...

The two that I am still looking at are (the Sim2 Lumis 3D-S is no longer in the running):

DPI Titan Reference 1080
Runco SC-60D

Anyone have any input on either, or have another recommendation?

I hope you have ruled out hifi speakers such as the Signature 8 mentioned on some of your other threads with this size room. You need to go big for such a reference HT room.

Now you are talking about an amazing room. Glad to hear that you have come around on the audio. Now, what ever sub you use, you will need several of them. Something like eight dual LMS-5400's in a sealed configuration.

Absolutely not! The low frequency extension on that is spec'ed at 30 Hz and looking at the response graph, it's -15 dB at that point!! You need something that goes way lower. The Paradigm you were looking at before are way better, but the suggestion above is better. Or, at the risk of repeating myself, get something from Danley.

With the kind of room you are looking to build, not holding back on picture size and projector quality as well as main speakers, don't skimp out on the all-important subwoofer. Those are 'ok' but I don't think you are interested in 'ok'. You'd need a lot of them for your 4700 cubic-foot room and they only go to 20 Hz.

Maybe you could do Infinite Baffle (IB) subs with the adjoining AV room? Or put four Danley DTS-10 behind the screen? (http://www.danleysoundlabs.com/tappe...MODEL=DTS%2010)

Start a thread in the subwoofer section! You have them everywhere else! ;-)

I guess I am confused, the Feature section on the Danley website says that the subwoofer has "an unheard of output down to 10 Hz".

While the Performance Data section states it only goes down to 15 Hz.

I think it is spec'ed to 15 Hz but room gain makes it useable to 10 Hz. Many people on the forum have it because it was available and affordable in kit form, so there's info about it around. Ask in the subwoofer section and you

I have heard three different DTS-10 set ups. They are very nice subs. They are far from plug and play. They are large and they require a lot of EQ. Dual LMS 5400's would go lower with more output (down low) and be simpler to implement into a system.

If you can, depending on viewing angle with the 16 footer, try to stay at 18' wide since the closer you get to a square room it makes audio setup more of a challenge.

Hmmm, I was told by the screen guy that 20' wide would be too small for a 16' wide screen...

Hi, everyone. after reading this thread i have a couple of questions. I currently have an abundance of audio and video as I am using an Epson 6010 with a 106'' screen, paradigm 100 studio mains, paradigm studio 590 center channel, paradigm ADP 590 surrounds, paradigm studio SUB 12, paradigm monitor SUB 12, driven by an Anthem MRX 700. All this in a 12' x 16' room with 7' ceilings. But we are building a new house and I will have a new room in the basement, 22' x 35', but not square. weird shape. but i will have the 22' wall to put my screen on. i plan on getting a 165 dia. screen to use for 2D and using my 106 for 3D. My questions are, is the 165'' screen to big for the 6010, and after reading about the subs above, do i have enough woofer power for this size of room. Thanks for the feedback.

I think a curved 16' on a 18ft wall would work but it would alter probably the # of seats in a row. If the inside measurement was 18' then you would have about 6-7" on each side hey it's all going to be black (wall and frame) anyways.

An issue however might be that there is not enough space to work cutting it that close.

So according to these screen calculations...

A 16' wide screen (2.35:1), with a 6000 lumen projector:

Has a maximum (THX recommended) seating distance (rear row) of 24.6 feet?

And the projector can be placed anywhere from 21.6 feet to 32.5 feet from the screen?

Is 71.6 foot-Lamberts a plasma bright screen?

That is retina burning bright. According to Stewart:

That can be done, using the JBL for 30 to 40hz and up and the LMS 5400 from that point and down, but I would probably just use dual LMS 5400's for 80hz and down. Four dual opposed would do very well in your room.

Depends on your listening levels and listening distance for the speakers. For the subs, you do not have enough. If that 165" diagonal screen is a High Power screen (Da-Lite) and you low mount the projector, then you will be fine. If not, then I would be concerned.

A few corrections. First, you can't use the 2.35 screen area, unless you are using a projector with a native output of 2.35. Since you did not say which projector (Titan is 16:9) I am going to assume 16:9 and an A-lens. Second, you can't use the max listed output of a projector. Try using 40%. That will be more realistic, once calibrated. The A-lens can give you 12% to 20% of the brightness back. Using these numbers with your 16' wide 2.35 1.3 gain screen, I get 24 to 26 Foot Lamberts with a new lamp. Still very bright. You would be able to use low lamp for a while, with this setup.
