Thanks LeBon-

I'll add you to the list of satisfied triad owners. This is great to hear! I really can't wait to watch my hunting shows on the big screen....lol

I have to say that this has been one expensive 4 day stretch for me, but I am only a center channel away from a complete 7.2 setup. I just picked up an additional pair of Triad Silver surrounds, and also Triad L and R front speakers. This will be paired with my 2 Triad Gold Power amps. I cant wait to crank this system up!

LMAO....I hear ya. I would not have one complaint if it was just the HT, but doing the whole basement sucked. Ended up finishing 1400 sq/ft

I eased my pain with my purchasing of speakers. I bought 8 subs/speakers in 4 days. Only hurts for a minute

The three bronze subs will really kick a**. Sounds like you are taking your already killer system and adding even more. That's awesome

No prob at all mixing. I thought I had to stay in the same family also but after talking with Triad a few times about my setup and room this is what they recommended. The only reason I am going with the golds is cause when i heard them vs the silvers u can push the heck out of them up front. they just have a more extension vs the silver. the silvers are wonderful also don't get me wrong. i was originally going with just 2 larger subs. one front and one back, but again triad said for a little bit more i can go down to bronzes in the rear and sides and get pretty much whatever i want up front and it will be much more evened out when all is said and done. i'm putting alot of my budget into speakers cause i'm only doing this once. that and the amps also. amps i don't know what i'm doing yet. I can get crown amps very very cheap, but i'm also thinking qsc amps. what i would love would be the nad master's 7 channel beast and call it a day. i have heard it many times and it's really really nice. i have had many diff nad pieces over the years and never had a problem with them like others have now and then.

Sanding is done!

Ready to throw up a few coats of primer. Then I'll start working on the ceiling, riser, stage, and baffle wall.

Door question:

I have 4 x 6" wide throw hinges for the HT door. My door frame is exactly 6.5". My question is this, will the hinges I have work for a door that is 2.5" thick and covered in 2" of treatment.

I thought I read somewhere that BIG mentioned 4 x 8 hinges, not sure.
you will need 4.5x8.

The cheapest I have found were 39.97 a hinge. Does anyone know of another more cost friendly retailer. These were for standard weight too, so I might go with some heavy weight hinges i found for 67.00. And then just use 2 if I can. I'll have to see the weight specs.

Thanks a ton for that.

And 4 should be ok for the 2.5" door? Its basically a 1 3/4 solid core with a sheet of 3/4 MDF glued on one side. Its pretty heavy.

I have not been to good with pics. So here are the last of the room construction photos, boring but it is nice to be done with this point. FUN STARTS NOW.

Drywall done in the rest of the basement

Drywall completely done and sanded in the HT

Screen wall

I did have a chance to work on the door frame today. Frame is 6.5" wide. Like everything else in the HT, it is Walnut.

Sanding the door frame

Walnut is really one of my favorite hardwoods. I have a good stock of mahogany, cherry, oak, and maple as well but walnut is my choice. I just love the color and grain.

Next up is the baffle wall and platforms for the two subs.

+1 to cdika, use four and that is be more than sufficient to hold the weight since they are steel. Word of advice - make sure the blocking on your hinge side is beefy and even spread the load to the adjoining stud with horizontal cripples if you can.

EDIT: Do a thorough perimeter vacuum and get some acoustic caulking in the junction between the bottom of the drywall and the floor for your soundproofing.

Not a pleasant day. My speakers are starting to come in and I picked up my subs today. Both dust caps were dented.

I am not going to risk messing up the woofer to pull it out, they will be behind the screen anyways, but not something I wanted to see when i opened the box. But, wow are these subs massive. Both came with a Triad amp.

On to other things. I have been experimenting with finishes on the Walnut. I found one I really like, a Tung oil base and dewaxed shellac top coat. Pictured with some GOM fabric. I love the natural look of Walnut so I just want to bring out the grain. I have also used some Teak and Walnut oil. I'll continue to mess around with it. If anyone has experience with finishing walnut or just some suggestions please add them.

I will upload a bunch of photos that I have taken once my photobucket account starts working again.

The following picture dont do justice to how good the Tung oil hand-rubbed finish looks. I found a winner! It really makes the grain and natural color of the walnut stick out.

Bummer on the subs. I don't think it should affect the sound quality much if at all. I wonder if you could take a shop-vac and just try to persuade them out a little.

Loving that finish on the walnut. I'm a big fan of tung oil finishes. It makes the wood look so rich.
there used to be a old trick for fixing the dents you can put a piece of tape like painters tape on the dent you use it like a dent puller
i would be nervous using any taper stronger then painters tape

Thanks. Im pretty much set on the Tung Oil. However the finish above was done using "Tung Oil Finish" which only has some tung oil in it (that is what all of the home centers have on the shelves). I ordered some 100% pure tung oil and am going to give that a shot and see if I can get an even better look, although I am very pleased with the way it has turned out so far.

I tried both the vacuum and tape trick. Neither worked. The dust cones are just too rigid. I dont want to press the issue anymore. They will be behind an AT screen anyways, but it's still dissapointing.

Dave, 100% agree with you on walnut and natural finish.  I trimmed out my whole house in walnut (started with rough lumber).

My finish formula was (pure) tung oil : blo : varnish and turpentine in a 2:2:1:1 ratio.  Let sit for at least a week.  Then sprayed many coats of lacquer on it.

Looks like that walnut is really going to glow when you're finished. Here's to many hours of dust free clear coating

thanks guys. I have extremely high expectations for my trim work. Its gonna take about 400 b/ft. Lot of damn wood.

Results are in.

100% Pure Tung Oil absolutely kills the Tung Oil Finish. This picture is before I sprayed a coat of satin poly for a top finish coat. However I think it just dulled the great look the oil gave the piece.

On to some not too good news. Project will be on hold for the next 6 or so weeks. I will be able to build the stage and riser, but all of my finish work will not get started until I am able to get back into the shop I am going to use. The guy who is letting me use his shop has paying customers to take care of. I will in the mean time start getting my lumber milled. I am having the crown and backband done off site. I am milling the chair and base here.

Waiting is no fun at all

Dave, Cool choice of wood. Walnut is my favorite too. For my theater I didn't want a really dark walnut finish that can happen with multiple coats of oil so I finished with a couple of coats of shellac followed by 3-4 hand applied satin poly. I paired it with Maple warmed with shellac/TransTint dye. I got some great burl is some of the stock...

Looking forward to your results..

Thanks moggie. Your trim looks really good. Did you pay for the burl or were you just fortunate to get stock with burl.

With that trim is that one piece with profiled corners and two v-grooves or is it a piece in the middle with a cove or roundover bit?

The walnut is by far my choice of wood, at least domestic. I took quite a few logs to the saw mill this summer, unfortunately they only yield about 2-3 boards out of 10. and that is with a good log. But the FAS I had graded out was in great shape.
