Kinetic River Cinema - Page 20

Wow, almost the bottom of page 3. A little over a week feels like a year!

A few small updates.....

I had to make a small modification to the entry door to the HT, due to the thickness of the door and the amount of treatment and finishing on the inside of the door I had to rebuild the interior door frame. I pretty much just ripped out the 2x4 on the hinge side and will replace with a 2x8 ripped down to 6". This will let me run the wainscoting run right across the inside of the door in the room.

On a few side notes:

I decided to go with Quest Acoustic panels for the Theater, much more to come on that later!

And I thought I would post a piece of furniture that was built by a friend and someone I really lean on when it comes to woodwork, especially finishing. This was done several years ago for one of his customers in Miami. I think it is one of the finest custom pieces you will see, it is hypo bleched bleaced walnut crotch and highly figured walnut to imitate antique bleached french walnut polished to a mirror finish using a French Polishing technique.

Are you swinging your door into the room, or out?

Have you looked around yet locally for door suppliers?

How did your door modification turn out?

Completely missed your question Tim as it has been a while since I posted. Demo is done, I just need to frame the rough opening on the hinge side.

FWIW...Im still in a holding pattern with the HT and the basement as well. Between my wedding and xmas I have had no time to get anything done. Nevertheless, I will be hitting it hard right after the new year.

Make that after duck season

Dave,

Good to see another Marylander around. My wife and I are saving up for a house and are gearing up for the home theater. Your woodworking skills are impressive, I am not much of a woodworker or a construction guy myself, so threads like yours inspire me. Subscribed!

Thanks for chiming in. Just keep reading as much as you can here on AVS, you would be surprised how much you learn and can accomplish yourself. Good luck

Update:

I have taken an extended break to accommodate the waterfowl hunting season. Having said that, there have been a few changes since I last picked up the hammer. One was the decision to go with Qwest panels for sound treatments, thus I hired the Erskine Group and more specifically Shawn Byrne (aka SierraMikeBravo). He is designing the room and I will post plans when available and what Shawn gives the OK on.

More to come

I cry FOWL!  You have been DUCKing your theater responsibilities lately!

Sorry, as stupid as that sounded, I just couldn't resist.

I just noticed that you have a Kreg router table.  How do you like it?  Do you have a lift with it?  I recently upgraded from an older Porter Cable bench top table to the Kreg with a lift and I can't believe I didn't do it much sooner.

Can't wait for more theater updates.

Nick

I love the kreg table. It's been awesome. I don't have a lift but I manage just fine without it. But a great table nonetheless.

And yes I have been neglecting the HT. but it will be picking up again in no time

I got my drawings back from Shawn (aka SierraMikeBravo) at Erskine Group. These are the stripped versions for viewing

Why are your L and R speakers outside of your screen?

I would need a 140" wide screen to accommodate the proper spacing. And at my max throw distance there is not an affordable PJ I can find to project on that size screen. The speakers will be in the left and right columns on the front stage
post #584 of 590
So the speaker positions were determined based on room size/dimensions, then a screen was designed to fit around (or your case - due to budget - between) the left and right speakers. Do I have that right?
Is the screen frame the issue? Seems like you could get that 140" screen and then mask down with AT panels in order to get the speakers where you want them. That's assuming you are not using a high dollar screen.

Correct

The original plan was for a baffle wall, but I have some issues up front that would not work with a baffle wall, such as two support posts from the I beam. So, with my limitations up front and limited length of the room, the LR speakers had to come out from behind the screen. In the picture, they are on the back wall, in the design they are actually a bit forward and the L and R are toed in a bit. To what degree, im not sure. This is one of the earlier drawings, little has changed except the front wall. I'll have more details on the final position of the speakers after Shawn calibrates the room.

forgot to mention that I already had a great deal for an SMX screen in place which is 120" wide 235

I'm assuming you are you getting this used from a 3rd party and aren't planning on getting it directly from SMX.
