Hi,

I just bought one. I have a few DVD I bought from oversea for my son. The player won't allow me to play it.

Is there a region free hack for this model? Online there is some instruction but it mentioned about the REPEAT button. The remote I got does not have button with this label.

Thanks

I just bought a 2nd unit of this model for $30 as a refurbished model from Best Buy... Seems to be working fine...

This BD player came bundled with my Samsung EH6030 LED-LCD TV. I haven't used it much since my PS3 is my primary BD player, but I decided to give it a go today and feel it's overall PQ when playing back a BD movie is a bit lacking. Mainly it seems like there is some undefeatable NR filter being applied that smooths textures like skin too much and makes the resolution appear less than the 1080/24p the TV says it's getting. I'm using the latest firmware (Ver.1060.0 May. 10. 2013) and have configured the display settings as follows:

under 'TOOLS' menu during BD playback:

Full Screen: Original (for zero overscan/1:1 pixel mapping)

Picture Mode: Standard (default and appears to be same as User defaults which are all zero/midpoint)

under 'Settings' on main menu:

Display:

TV Aspect Ratio: 16:9 Original

BD Wise: Off (grayed out)

Resolution: 1080p

Movie Frame (24Fs): Auto

HDMI Color Format: YCbCr(4:4:4)

HDMI Deep Color: Auto

Progressive Mode: Auto

Is there some setting I have set incorrectly or one not mentioned above that could be making the image look too soft vs. my PS3? Or is the PS3 just a better BD player? (The TV is using the same picture settings and input for both the PS3 and Samsung BD player since I am switching sources through a Yamaha AVR).

Since I have an xbox which doesn't have Bluray capability, I have no other Bluray source player to compare mine too...

Try changing the color space to 4:2:2. That's the max you can get on a disc anyway. The overly deep color may be introducing the filtering effect you are seeing. Sometimes progressive can result in a softer picture too. Turn that off and see if it helps. Your TV will deinterlace back to progressive anyway and possibly do it better than the samsung player can.

So, I should try:

Resolution: 1080i (and turn 24p off)

HDMI Deep Color: Off

HDMI Color Format: RGB Standard (there is no 4:2:2 YCbCr option just RGB Standard and RGB Enhanced)

Yes, deep color off and RGB standard. But turning 24p off is just for testing purposes to see if you see any change. It would be best in the long run to leave it at 1080p, 24fps Auto, if the picture quality is up to par. You may want to see if just the deep color and RGB change does the trick first.

I've tried various combinations wrt these settings and none of it seems to really help. It's not that the PQ of this BD player is bad or much worse than my PS3, but when it comes to displaying the finest detail in textures (like skin), the PS3 comes out on top by a significant (but not huge) margin.
