Bose Sub woofer not working with Onkyo TX-NR609

Hi,

I have Onkyo TX-NR609 to which I have connected Bose Acoustimass IV, 5.1 speaker system.

Since the Bose uses its own cross-over, I have disabled it in the Onkyo Speaker set-up. In the Onkyo speaker set-up, sub woofer is greyed out.

The sub woofer does not work - no sound coming out. The input (single RCA connector)of the sub woofer is connected to the sub woofer pre-out of the Onkyo.

Does anyone know why sub woofer does not work? I have tested it separately and works both, without a input to its connector ( I expect its own cross-ever is getting signal to it) and when I connect it to the pre-out of another system.

It would be a great help if someone can post an answer.

TIA,
mpm

First note that the Bose system does not generally work well with an AVR that has it's own auto EQ (eg. Audyssey) as there is no subwoofer detected. That said ... if you look at your Bose Owner's manual it says nothing about connecting the sub to the sub preout, rather that line level input is for a powered center speaker. You connect the FL/FR speakers to the Bose module which passes the LFE signal to the sub and also the FL/FR signals to the FL/FR speakers connected to the module. You would be much better served returning the Bose setup and getting a stand alone 5.1 speaker setup. It's less important that you switch while using an AVR like the 609 which uses the lowest version of Audyssey 2EQ as 2EQ cannot EQ the subwoofer as do the other levels of Audyssey (eg. MultEQ), however, if you ever upgrade to a Denon AVR (eg. 1612 or 1613 that uses MultEQ, you'll definitely want a stand alone setup of speakers and sub that can pass the sub preout of the AVR directly to the sub).

Also note, there is a dedicated Onkyo 609 Owner's thread.

Thanks.

Since I am far removed from the possibility of either exchanging my brand-new 609 or the Acoustimass for another system, I need to deal with the existing problem.

I will disconnect the sub from the Pre-out and try.

One puzzle is, I am unable to enter the setup menu point where it gives one the choice to set the speaker size.

Onkyo German site had a posting which said to set the speakers to:

Front = Large

Center = Small

Surround = Large

Surround Back = No

Front High = No

Wide Front = No

Sub woofer = NO

The subwoofer setting = NO is important because Bose uses its own crossover in the subwoofer, which adds the bass parts of the individual channels..

I am unable get to this point where I define the speaker size.

TIA
