That seems to work for me. You might try it as a workaround for now until something more elegant is on hand/

Not that I recall. As when you logged out, it would clear the cookies and the cookies told it what skin to use.

Yes, the cookie was cleared when you logged out; however, that didn't happen if you hadn't logged in (which I rarely did). Anyway, logging out took you to the main page where you could quickly reset it to use retro (despite being logged out) - restoring the cookie.

I suppose this is moot since you apparently have no interest in restoring any of this functionality.

Ok I see that. What about in Subscriptions there is a little box on the LEFT with the number of new post from the last visted. Is there anyway down the road you could add the arrow in the Subscriptions.

Sorry, seriously lost here, not just in the new software but also in this thread so far (which I only just now found).  Please forgive me if this has already been discussed, and if so just point me to the place to find the already-posted answer.

In my own opinion some of the changes make no difference, some are slightly better, some are slightly worse but livable.  But there's one thing I sorely miss: the old software let a member subscribe to daily updates at the forum level, which emailed a list of newly created threads and then updated threads in a particular forum.  I still subscribe to the threads I want to follow and notifications of the first new post since my last visit still arrive (it now takes two clicks to get to the first unread post from the message instead of one, but as I said, some of the changes are slightly worse but livable), but when there's a new thread added in one of my favorite fora, how can I find out about it and decide whether to ignore it or read it?  The "forums" page of the AVS updates has just too much: updated threads throughout the entire site instead of just new threads in my few selected favorite fora.

Hi...You will find you can subscribe to FORUMS section or THREADS or other items....(So nothing missing...Just need to look some and play around.)

Click it and you will have the options of how you receive updated or if you just want to store it for use when on the site.

Not sure what you mean by two cliclks...Are you referring to the email you get? Mine just takes me to the first new post.

I must say, I am sorry to say I am kind of lost on the rest of your thoughts or questions as I could not quite figure out what you were asking or stating. Sorry.

Just discovered the new site launched, when the Android app started getting an 'unknown response from server'. I noticed the app is now useless, and there is no new version - it has disappeared from Android Market (Google Playhouse)! Will there be a replacement? I found the app easier on my Moto Droid I than using a full browser.

Although I am new to avsforum but visited so many times earlier to get my answers. Liked earlier version of it but features like scrolling through forum areas, automation etc. etc. facilitates the regular avsforum users.

I'll dig there.  Thank you.  (One nice thing about this new software is that I can double-space between sentences in a way that not only is easier to type than the old software's requirement, but also which sticks when people quote me instead of being converted to asterisks and sticks when I edit my posts instead of disappearing and needing to be reentered manually.)

The first click is on the link in the notification message, which takes me to the beginning of the thread.  There, at the top of the thread, is a "# Unread Posts" link.  That link leads to the first unread post, ad it's the second of the two clicks.  The old software's notifications had an &goto=newpost modifier in their links, to take you straight to the first unread post by clicking a link in the emailed notification.  As I said, it's highly livable and I don't even find it annoying any more.

Another big help is that earlier in this thread someone else asked, and someone else answered, how to display the timestamp of a post instead of the elapsed time since it was posted (by hovering over the elapsed time).   Thanks to both the asker and the answerer.

Related to dattier's question about forum subscriptions, I used to get daily updates of the new threads added and what threads had new posts. For example, I'd get an email titled "DVD Movie, Concerts, and Music Discussion" and in the email would be individual links to each new thread started and each thread with new posts. I'm not getting that anymore, it usually came around 11p to 1am west coast time. I have been getting an very odd mishmash of posts seemingly unrelated to any particular forum that arrives I think around midday or so. Some of it I know for certain I'm not subscribed to and some of it I am. I have checked the particular forums I subscribe to to make sure it says Daily for the email notification, so I don't know what the problem might be.

I don't know why some of those "Start Date"s show 6/x/12 as I have been subscribed for years to most of them.

WOAHHHHHH! New AVS!

I've been a member here for a while and a reader for even longer, and while I don't post as much as some of the others here this is by far my #1 site for most everything and anything A/V related....

I for one welcome the changes! Awesome to see one of my favorite sites of all time catch up to the new web 2.0 era! Kudos! biggrin.gif

At first the 'new' AVS forum was painfully slow to load and navigate and so I just didn't visit for a couple days while the bugs got worked out. Today it appears to be much faster, however still loads a bit slower than the "old" website but I can live with that. The biggest pain to me is how many 'back clicks' it now takes to go back a single page... its how I navigate through all forums, one step forward, one step back (or two steps forward, two steps backward, etc). A couple years ago AVS went from a single 'back click' to get to the previous page, to having to make three 'back clicks' (I know it was due to adding even more ads per page and I didn't mind it too much) now however it takes 13 back clicks to get back to the previous page. I've given up and will probably not visit here much in future due to this one little, but major inconvenience for me. I understand AVS is 'free' and therefore must run lots of adverts to make its money but when I have so many other choices of AV forums to go to, at some point I have to make the decision if a particular website is just too much of a hassle.... it now appears AVS has maybe crossed that threshold for me. I realize that marketing is the engine that runs the Internet but there comes a point when I find it become just too much. I only have time for one (of each type) of forum that I can visit on a regular (daily) basis and AVS has now fallen off that list of daily forums... I'm so sorry.

As posted in another thread...

I need to say this...WE ARE NOT HTF. We never were and are still not. There is a lot more to the story of HTF than just the platform switch. I like those guys. Parker was a good virtual friend of mine to the point we shared site idea and helped each other with site code. Ron is passionate about software and the movie experience. And Adam is, well, I do not know a lot about him other than I like him when we talk. Parker is no longer involved as you may or may not know. I miss him being involved. But their is a lot more to it.

They were also the 2nd site, correct me if I am wrong, to go with Huddler why back when. We were approached also in the past but could not take the risk. Too early. Fast forward...Huddler is now at 45 +/- employees (I think that's the close number) with most of the staff dedicated to coding vs the 6 they had back then. They have select sites on the platform and are NOT LOOKING to be a boxed platform you can buy and setup. Yes, they are young, but the platform is evolving and they are backed by some very powerful firms. They are not setting themselves up to fail. And yes, before you ask, we can move all the data back if anything were to happen. But that is far from my mind as I need to look to the future. No good comes from thinking about failure.

All in all, we are not HTF. I like the HTF team. And now that we are involved with the same company, I hope that the HTF team can benefit from not only our influence in helping to push the platform, but also on the revenue side. Yes, I said the bad word...REVENUE! This site nor HTF would not be able to stand without income. Now with the combined sales team I hope we both can do well.

BTW...Huddler also handles Overclock.net and AppleInsider.com and backyardchickens.com (no I did not make that up) for example. Not small sites. And this is only a few.

All in all...I thought I should say a little something. Thank you kindly for listening. (Reading) I now need to get back to a movie.

It looks like you are subscribed to a lot for FORUMS. As such, you are getting a list of any thread that was either new or updated. Each thread is listed by name. So I think what you might be looking for is each to be broken down by forum section?

You get it at a weird time as we break up the times we do them to save processing. Doing smaller checks of members vs all at one time.

Both of those are under the MY PROFILE tab and EDIT ACCOUNT DETAILS.

That's the way it's always been set, but it's not what I'm talking about.

That bottom image is how I used to get the daily digest of what new threads were added and which threads were updated with new posts, I got this for each "sub-forum" I was subscribed to. For example, I subscribe to the "HDTV Technical" sub-forum of the "HDTV" parent forum. I would get a separate, once a day, email for each sub-forum I subscribed to. Now, I get what's in the second image once a day, which includes what looks like all the posts from all the forums and sub-forums I'm subscribed to in a very disorganized list with no indication of what sub-forum the topics are associated with.

The first image was to display how I have my subscriptions set so that if they are not set correctly for what I want, and what I was getting with the old system, someone might indicate to me how to correct it.


(BTW, with this new system it's makes it very hard to see any delineation between an image and the text posted next to it when that post is re-posted, it appears as if the whole post is one long image.)

Thanks for letting me know it's not a setting that I have wrong though, and hopefully an adjustment can be made, as the way it is, is frankly, terrible and next to useless.

Not the end of the world though, swallowing the last drop of my 2007 Kosta Browne Koplen Vineyard pinot would definitely be something to be very concerned about though! tongue.gif

There are over 400 members and 1000 guests on line right now and some of the threads are intense.

Wow and I thought AV geeks and nerds got intense. That site is a real eye opener in more than one way. cool.gif

Those other sites are huge too.
