Davyo,

Sorry to say it's not in development at this time. Just getting a light and dark skin took many months of work.

There were a lot of talks about the retro theme. All of them ended somewhere along the lines of there's such a small percentage of users who still use it that it'd be irresponsible to look at the feasibility of it at this time.

(Personally speaking, that retro theme was a crime against humanity.)

I went through the walk through and I must be dense because I can't figure out how to go to the dark skin. The walk through indicated that dark skin users would default to that setting but it was not so for me and I haven't been able to figure out how to change it. Thanks.

I'll miss the retro too.

- click on your username at the very top right of the screen to take you to your user preferences account.

- click on "edit account details tab"

- one of the preference categories here is Visual Preferences. (It's near the bottom) Pick AVS Black instead of AVS default.

Thanks, chirpie. I finally found it right after I posted my question. Thank goodness!

I greatly miss the Retro skin. I've been using it since i first started reading AVS about 2001 and and it always made me feel like "i'm home" compared to other forums, but i'm slowly getting accustomed to the black theme. When i first saw that they were going to be doing away with Retro i switched to Black so as not to shock my brain when the big switchover occurred, but i found myself switching back to Retro a lot and pretending that it's not going away biggrin.gif

Retro made AVS very unique, but now this new platform is somewhat cold and uninviting and actually uncomfortable - kinda like getting yanked from your home and thrust into a big corporate nursing home. The big saving grace though is that it's the membership and content are what makes a forum great so once we all get used to the new platform it will be business as usual. Nothing lasts forever, but it was a good run wink.gif

That made me laugh :-) I agree with you, it feels kludgy and not very well put together. It feels more like a steamy pile...(the software not the site). It may take time to get used to, for those that have the patience for it.
It is the people and info that makes the site but if the software isn't friendly it's going to be a deterrent. Thus far it's a fail imho. Maybe over time it'll feel better but right now it's a darn shame.

I can only read so much here and then my eyes bother me...Even with the dark skin. The bright white on black just doesn't work for me.

Suggestions? I say that for when we invited a lot of people into the testing area before we made the move, no one made mention of the white on black. In fact, 5 of the people who posted on this thread were invited into the sandbox and that would have been the best time for any suggestions as we in full development of the skins. (near the end, but in change mode.)

So...Really, I am serious...Suggestions as the text color choice? Not saying it will or will not be changed mind you, but would love to have the suggestions and we surely can take a look. Now remember, why you may say blue, someone else may say green and someone else may say gray. So, just be ready. smile.gif (Not trying to be "smart" with you, just a reality.)

Thanks.

Just a note...Out of all the members on the site...It was like 450 (forget the exact number) that used Retro. With 2500 (again, not exact) that used Black with the rest that kept the default or did not know they could change it. Now depending on the browser you may use, you can actually override the color and make your own for any website. Not sure you knew that or may take the time to do it. But just tossing int out there in case in helps.

I agree with some of the other posts. I really miss the old retro colors - it was much easier on the eyes since I bet a lot of us read in darkened environments. I find the new look much harder to read with the bright scheme and find I spend less time here now because of this.

Hi...

Not sure...but have you tried the BLACK skin? Looks like this currently...

I ask for it was not clear in your post.

Suggestions?

As I mentioned on another thread, check out the skins on Stevehoffman.tv forum. They have one called blu-bayou that rules. I'm not suggesting you copy them, just get some ideas. Or use the ones you had from the old forum?

As far as the one alternative skin you have right now, why not change the color of the white text to something like: CFCFCF I am running a Chrome extension that allows me to change page colors. I use it on AVS now. The grey text, that I have set it to, is so much easier on the eyes.

Another thing too is typing messages here is done in a white box, even with the black skin. Would be nice to have a different shade for that as well...Maybe black with CFCFCF (grey) text or even just a slight grey shade with black text.

Example:

Just ignore the light blue text, which I had set...Although it doesn't look bad.

I do not think we will be able to change the input text box color I am sorry to say.
That is unfortunate that something that simple can't be tweaked. I guess I'll have to run this extension permanently with AVS. I normally just use it with google and ebay...Although I don't post a great deal so I might be able to live with the white some days.

Edit...Actually I like the blue text now. This is what it looks like instead of the yellow, with the topic headers. Some of the grey bordering got lost on this, wasn't intentional:

Or if you don't like the blue...

Nicely done! I personally find it to muted to read for my tastes. I am looking into actually seeing if the cell table color of the post text area can be just light gray vs black. That is how it was on the old Black skin and I think it was missed. (I just happened to notice that.) But we will see how it all goes. I will not have access to the skin designer until Monday.

The issue with the text box is this a platform wide system. Thus somethings if changed, could also affect other areas. So we need to keep some standards. Thats is why doing skins can be hard as you seem to know. Even the old site had skin issues between the 3 that where offered.

Glad you are able to make it like you want with some tools.

Here's a couple others which look good with greyish text color fonts. Hopefully these screen caps look the same to others (different calibrated monitors) as they do me.

I like the black scheme .. it's crisp and modern ..

As far as the update goes, I like it as well .. sure, after years of using the old interface, my mouse practically moved itself, buy hey, we'll get used to it again .. the gangs all here, discussion is still going on

If it changed back to the old scheme in a year, there would be an equal or greater outcry ..

Kudos to David and the staff ..

I won't really mind it either once the text font color is toned down.

David,

Well, you had to know you were going to get some kickback after the changeover.wink.gif

Let me share an artistic thought on the matter to go along with the AVS Retro club.

Now having had some fun, I know you want specific input.

Randy nailed it right on. I have been a AVS user for over 10 years, finally signed up in 2004 as a member, and have always used the Retro skin. This place has been a home inside a home.

It is very difficult to adapt after using the Retro skin that long. I know you have mentioned the stats on users of the Retro skin. I wonder how many "core" members

used it and if the majority using the default skin, were guests who did not really know or care to change from the default?....

Using the black skin here, was at first okay, yet the white on black text tends to not allow me to read as long right now. Once a thread is read of course it does not stay "bold," though the color yellow used

seems to remain the same, making it harder to distinguish it from a new thread that is bold in the title. Yes I can see the difference , yet not as easy at first glance vs the old Retro skin.

The default has more than enough white in it for my tastes, yet with only two choices I will have to spend more time with both.

Sure we did! smile.gif

That video was great! Thanks for sharing! Now, can I interest in having you make one to help others with some of the new items here or maybe where to fine some items that are different? smile.gif

Let me share one...

I kept this from Way Back long ago....Hold on to your hats.
(Note, at the end you will get the error page as the file is not their when it tries to go to the original Ultimate BB system.)

And if you really want to have some fun...Here is one of my favorite new member video intros made for anther site long ago. I would love something fun like this, or live video, for AVS. Maybe I should run a contest. Check it out... http://gprime.net/flash.php/postingandyou

How do you change the skins?
The thing that bothers me the most is all the unnecessary Adverts and info box on the right hand side, making browsing the the main forum list extremely annoying, everything is squashed up to allow room for the right hand side stuff!

Can we have this AD stuff on the right removed (put up at the top/bottom) so that we have the full width of our browsers please?smile.gif
