Audio output capability of 50PX75U...

A friend of mine is looking for a simple sound bar and subwoofer setup for his 50PX75U. He has a bunch of devices connected to the tv. (cable box, BR player, HD DVD player, wii, ps2, kids video game device, etc. 2 of them are using HDMI the rest are analog.

My question is what will ouput over the digital optical ouput? I am hoping that all sound sources, digital and analog, will be converted and ouput over the digital optical output. I have feeling that isn't the case though.

Assuming I am correct and the digital optical output won't do that then is there an analog ouput that will output all audio sources connected to the tv? Almost like a headphone jack output would?

I am trying hard to convince him to get a modern receiver first and connect everything to that. His wife just wants a simple sound bar setup though but she wants all sources connected to work through the soundbar.

Any help woudl be greatly appreciated it.

BTW, I searched for a PX75U owners thread but I couldn't find one. It is probably too old.

Thread is located here.

I had to use Google to find this thread, because using AVSForums new forum search produced no results also.

The optical output will only output 2 channel stereo from external sources that are connected to any of the TV's various inputs. It's a copyright protection thing.

Thank you for the link!

2 channel will be fine for a "cheap" sound bar. Are you sure it will output all sources, regardless of their origin? In other words if the device is connected to the tv via HDMI or analog will it output 2 channel always over the optical out?

remember a situation with another friends Panny plasma that the optical output would only output audio from the built in tuner. Any device connected to the tv would not ouput audio via the optical out of the tv.

On all three of my Pannys, the Optical Out is active at all times.

He probably had his devices connected via HDMI, and didn't properly set those HDMI inputs to DIGITAL in the TV's Advanced Audio menu (a common oversight). That's the only way the Optical won't output any audio.
