Cable and OTA channel mixup

Thread Starter
Hopefully someone else has encountered this issue and has a solution.

I've had an HTPC hooked up to my outdoor antenna for a few months now and, for the most part, it works well. My internet connection is provided by Comcast, and I have been paying an extra $2/month for the local basic channels. For a while now, I have wanted to integrate my cable channels into my htpc as a back-up for the occasional times when my OTA reception is spotty.

Here is a breakdown of my htpc:

Athlon X2 250 cpu
760g motherboard
4gb ddr3
HVR-2250 tuner card for OTA
ATI Theater 550 pci for cable box input
runs Windows 7 media center

To that end, I recently got a free digital SD cable box from Comcast, and after some initial setup headaches, I was able to input the cable signal into my ATI tuner card via an s-video cable and rca audio cables. I use an IR blaster to control the cable box with an MCE remote.

Here is my problem. Some of my local cable channels in the 300-600 channel range appear in the media center guide as a cable channel, but when I tune into one, the htpc will actually tune into the OTA equivalent of the same channel. For example, my OTA channel 57.4 is MeTV, one of the few OTA channels that I have trouble getting. For me, that same channel is also available on Comcast channel 311. When I choose channel 311 in the channel guide, however, the channel that is displayed is channel 57.4. I can be watching 57.4, and if I turn it to channel 311, there is no break in the picture or audio, and none of the momentary pause that normally occurs when switching from an OTA to a cable channel. Plus, the spotty reception remains. This happens on a few other channels as well.

Is there a way to go into the settings of WMC and specify that these few, troublesome cable channels actually tune in and display the correct signal from the cable box and not the ATSC signal of the same channel? Is there a way that I can make WMC see the difference between the cable and OTA offerings of the same channel?

TIA for any help you guys can give me.

im doing this from memory, but this is how you would fix the issue.

each channel prioritizes your tuners. For example, all my local channels will use my ATI 650 before they use my cablecard tuner.

To enable that, you will go into the guide and highlight the channel name/number on the lefthand side of the screen. you want to go into the channel options (settings maybe?) in there you will find a setting labeled channel sources. Thats what you want to edit. My guess is that right now your antenna is taking precedence over the cable box. You can delete the antenna as a source all together if you wish.

OTA Channels will display the Channel Name such as 57.4. This may or may not also mean that the Channel 57.4 is using actual TV RF channel 57..
Your cable company is apparently tranmitting "MeTV" on QAM RF channel 311. OTA and QAM UHF channels are not normally using the same actual RF Channel number.
