Poor subscription management

Wow! My subscriptions just became useless at a single stroke.

Previoulsy I received a daily compilation of posts for each thread to which I subscribed. Very easy to use. I could keep up-to-date without actually accessing the web interface.

1. Now I get a just a single email with all updated threads listed. I prefer the more granular thread-by-thread approach.
2. The new digest claims that, for most threads, ALL posts are still unread, when in fact, I have read them all. I won't read them again.

I have other, less critical gripes, too: e.g., the new interface wastes enormous amounts of screen space.

If I can't re-configue around these "features," AVSForum has lost most of its utility for me.

Just what exactly was broken that needed fixing?

+ 1. So I suppose my initial impression was right about the daily e-mail of posts in a subscribed thread. It seems as though you now only get it in a "digest". This change absolutely sucks. mad.gif

go to "my profile"....

click "edit account details"...

scroll down to "email preferences"....

change "set new subscriptions" to "immediate"...

for any existing subs that are not set to immediate, then click the "edit subscriptions" link, and change the subscription notification frequency there....

You can set subs to immediate and to send you an email for every update, or to only send you updates while you are active on the site.  All the options you need are in the Edit My Subscriptions section.

Thanks, but, as far as I can tell, neither of these suggestions is on point.

I prefer to get the daily, full-text digest for each thread individually, not a compilation of links.


On another issue, the update notice is not recognizing that I have read any posts to one thread. There is no unread post count and the link keeps sending me back to the first post:

Went there first. Don't want immediate: an invitation to spam. I want thread-specific digests, not individual emails.

I agree. This is the only way that I am able to keep up with my interests on this site. I can't believe an oversite this large could have been made.

I'm not understanding the new subscriptions either. I still get a daily digest of the threads I am subscribed to, but no text. And even worse, when I click on the link to the thread in the email, it takes me to page 1 of the thread, instead of the page of the first post since my last digest. No lie, I have basically stopped using AVS forum because of this. frown.gif The latter issue is what matters to me most. I like to click the link and start reading where I last left off.

100% agree with this. I'm very disappointed with the new format. Now I get an email with a link to the thread, which brings me to the first post in the thread. Problems with this:
#1 I don't want to visit the site that often. I like being able to quickly read new posts in my email, and only visit if I have something to post back.
#2 Why would I want to go to the FIRST post in a thread with 200+ pages that is almost 2 years old?

I want an email with the full text of all posts since the last email. When I have something to add to the thread, I visit the site & post. Otherwise, I keep up via email only.

Without this feature, I will just totally drop out of these threads, as I refuse to visit the site just to keep up on an old thread.

Boo hiss so far for the new site, specifically subscriptions.

Shortly after I posted this, I got a PM and email from Nick Val asking me to forward the subscription update in question to a certain address. I did so right away, along with a malfunctioning link from the previous day's update.
Although I have not heard anything further, today's update has no such problem--so maybe it's fixed now.
However, I received no update yesterday (6-12-12)?

The update of Thu 6/14 has two links with empty/blank unread-post-count fields which take me to the very first post.

I haven't used the site since the update because of this. The longer it takes to fix, the less likely I will feel like starting up again. How could this have been overlooked? frown.gif

I just want to chime in that I feel exactly the same way. Basically I've just given up following the threads for my TV because it's now too much work to follow them. Which of course means that if someone has a question I could answer, or posts a cool tip I won't know about it and that diminishes the participation in the thread and the site. This needs to get fixed ASAP or you will loose a great deal of participation.

Lets face it. This wasn't overlooked. No one is that incompetent and still employed. Receiving emails doesn't generate site visits, ad views, or click throughs. What value did this upgrade add to the community again?

I preferred the full text emails as well. So, if anyone is keeping tabs, add another to the list requesting the old subscription emails.

After a week or so, I quit opening the subscriptions email at all. That format just doesn't work for me.

Same here, I delete it without even opening it as it's worthless to me. Plus, it actually lowers the site's page view counts as I'm no longer visiting those threads that I may have interest in.

Here's another request for bringing back the old subscription system. If it's about ad revenue, embed them in the emails but as it stands now, this new format won't get me to the site, I just don't have the time so you end up losing out completely.
