At this point in time I'm thinking that the studios ( Fox ) aren't taking a chance with a movie that's received so much back lash and negative reviews online, forums alike and expect it will surpass or come close to the original sadly to say.

Unless it's already inked, with some really good ideas and some interesting people attached to it!

I for one welcome a sequel.

Yeah, it's hard to say.

On one hand we are told that both film-makers and studios monitor the feedback from fans on the internet, and care about it. In which case
we can imagine all the backlash giving them pause about a sequel.

On the other hand, it also looks like ultimately money speaks and even some of the most hotly derided movies go on to multiple sequels if they make enough domestically or over seas.

I don't know where Prometheus currently fits in that scenario.

I personally would welcome a sequel to Prometheus. I can't help but remain hopeful Though, I have to say that the type of weaknesses Scott allowed in Prometheus does dampen my expectations somewhat for the quality of the BladeRunner sequel. I really hope that poor reaction to Prometheus hasn't changed the chances of that sequel, either in Scott wanting to do it, or a studio sill wanting to finance it.

Silent Hill (R Horror) is getting a sequel on ~100 million in revenue on a 50 million budget. Margins for R flicks are smaller, but then again Prometheus's marketing and budget were bigger. Still, it made a lot more over cost than a lot of R stinkers that got sequels.

As said, the hate is very vocal, but also a very small, but freverent group. The same exact thing happened to Trek 2009, and I've heard Paramount's looking to fast track a third after this one.

I can imagine the amount and the intensity of "nerd rage" coming from Trekkies.

I doubt the folks who now hold the rights to BR have been dejected by the performance of Prometheus.

I doubt that Ridley Scott gives a damn what anyone says about his movies on the internet or anywhere else. He strikes me as the type of director who long ago decided not to ever read reviews or listen to critics. From a certain point of view, that is a normal and perhaps even healthy attitude for an artist. On the other hand, when that artist has demonstrated a consistent downslide in the quality of his work over the years, a refusal to listen to constructive feedback is frustrating for his viewers.

Damon Lindelof, however, was known to actively monitor online discussion about Lost. I'm sure that he's well aware of the backlash against Prometheus. How much he was actually responsible for what wound up on screen is unclear at present. It's also unknown whether he would even be asked to write the potential sequel.

Of the feature films that Lindelof has written since Lost, Cowboys & Aliens was a bomb, Prometheus underperformed, and World War Z has been delayed a year for extensive rewrites and reshoots. If the Star Trek sequel disappoints, he's done in Hollywood.

He has also learned over the years that time changes peoples view of his movies. So maybe he takes most reviews with a grain of salt.

I'm tired of being told that I disliked Prometheus because I wanted it to be more like Alien. I know what I expected when I went into the movie, and I know why I didn't like it. Being dissimilar to Alien is the least of all the film's problems (except that Alien is a good movie, and this one is not).

Even worse are those who insist that I must have disliked the movie because I dislike Damon Lindelof and/or Lost. In fact, I was a big fan of Lost.

Both of these are straw man arguments with no basis in reality. The real reason that I disliked Prometheus is because it's dumb. I found it to be a dumb movie populated by dumb characters who do dumb things in the service of a dumb story. That is why I disliked Prometheus, and it has nothing to do with who wrote the screenplay or how much it resembles any other movie.

(And, for the record, anyone who would compare Prometheus to '2001' is smoking massive amounts of crack.)

I don't see why you would think TyrantII's reply was directed at you. He was replying to GoCaboNow. That's much clearer!


Now, as for the discussion, what 5 (+-) movies of last 10 years did you find not dumb or stupid and thus liked it?

Only about $25mil to go to beat ALIEN adjusted for the all time revenue take in the franchise, and they should be able to do that with openings scheduled soon in Germany and Japan.

This is awesome news, specially for me who though there wouldn't have been a sequel to the prequel

So can we start speculating now on the story line, all I'm saying they better not deviate from Noomi Rapace's character plan on going to the Engineers home planet , anythere other story would not do for me.

I looked but it doesn't specify the gender, only the age group. It would have looked more inclusive and less imitation like if they put couple of volleyballs at the bottom of that logo.

This from Guy Pearce regarding the "aging" of his Weyland character:

"We didn’t end up shooting it," Pearce said. "We got close to shooting it, and as we got closer, Ridley just started to see it as something that would just be a little distracting, almost. And funnily enough, there was this sort of marketing idea from the outset that we would do Peter Weyland giving this TED lecture, and it was kind of funny that that ended up taking precedence over what was in the movie. So, yeah, I guess in the end, they could have cast an older actor."

The scene in question was a dream sequence involving Pearce's Weyland and David, the "Lawrence of Arabia"-loving android played by Michael Fassbender.

"There’s a scene in the movie where we see David and he’s got his headset on and he’s talking to someone, and we don’t know who it is, and he gets confronted by Vickers [Charlize Theron]," screenwriter Damon Lindelof said to Slash Gear about the lost Pearce moment. "There’s a scene in the script that we decided not to shoot, where we see the inside of that dream, and basically David takes a jetski out with a beautiful woman in a bikini, to a yacht, and on the yacht is Weyland. Played by Guy, without old-age make-up: This is his dream."

As Lindelof told the Wall Street Journal, the TED viral video that starred Pearce was borne out of the concern that happened once the actor's "young" scene was cut.

"People are going to wonder why we cast Guy Pearce as an old man," Lindelof said. "Why not just cast an old man? So the audience needs to see him as a young man."

Thus, the TED video, directed by Scott's son Luke, was created.

The information you've been hounding me for shall now be found below. Enjoy. Please note I'm not going back to read what's already been said in this thread. Forgive me if I'm rehashing...

Lets start from the beginning, shall we? I'm just going to hit the ones right off the top of my head.

First, our fearless scientists embark on a lengthy journey. Why? Well, they don't know. I'm expected to believe a half billion mile journey across space was no big deal and they'd be ok with finding out why they were being put in cryosleep for over 4 years of their lives (roundtrip). Not good enough for me. You could argue that Weyland offered them so much money that they were all fine with it. Fair enough, but couldn't that have been eluded to? Better yet, my solution: When Weyland makes his presentation to them via holograph, he could have simply told them all they were lied to as far as why they were going, then Holloway explains the real reason...or at least the reason they think is the real reason. What could they do, go home?

Second, the behavior of the scientists. The geoligist Fifield and biologist Millburn are supposedly professionals paid a huge amount of money (we don't know for sure), and they've been on an expedition costing them that long of their lives...now they see a long dead alien body and decide they're just going to go back to the ship. Forget everything. We're sitting this one out. Believable and reasonable that is not. How about if they expressed concern and even shock, but kept it together. But how would they get separated from the others so they could do more stupid sh*t, you ask? Big area they were in. Seems logical that they could have simply explored another tunnel or room that didn't have a dead body at the entrance if they wanted. I mean, Fifield was the one mapping the place with his "pops" (and also the one who gets lost by the way...).

Third, the now infamous penis worm thing. Oh dear. Do I really have to explain this one? A biologist who was just running scared after Janek tells them there's a lifeform on the map (who abandons keeping an eye on them to pork Vickers, but I won't fault him there), sees fit to baby talk an alien lifeform they stumble across. Now, I'm not a biologist, but even I know what a threat display is. The phallic little fellow cobra'd on Millburn, yet he insists on petting it. How about they stumble across a seemingly benign lifeform (it may not have been aggressive, just defensive), accidentally stepping on it and causing it to spiral itself up his leg and attack out of fear. Same outcome, same time, a lot less stupid.

Fourth (I'm skipping some things on purpose), Shaw's cesarean. Lets just forget about her physical feats after the fact. Defenders will just say it was new future drugs or something. How about the fact that she isn't followed, tried to be stopped, and that the entire crew acts like it simply never happened (except for a single smartass quip by David)? Maybe just show her being chased and locking the door. Or afterward, just a small look from the ones trying to contain her on the table? Just something...

Fifth, Janek decides (after previously mentioned that he'd do it if needed) that he has to crash into the engineers ship to save Earth. Ok, I can buy that. Noble thing to do for a captain. But you know, his two copilots could have shown just a smidgen of concern over the fact that they were about to either have to jump ship and live a short life on an alien moon, or die from ramming another ship. They were anything but worried. They were all too happy to die. Well, maybe they just make them less selfish in the future. Why not just cut to each of them, with a short shot of the dread on their faces and the processing of what they had to do?

Sixth, continuing on that last one, the Prometheus was going on a historic mission filled with who knows what over half a billion miles away to an alien moon. Funded and attended by a man trying to prolong his life. You're telling me Weyland wouldn't have taken some of that trillion dollars and retrofitted a science/cargo vessel with one god damn missile? Quite the opposite. I'd expect it to be a fully armed ship besting full military rigs. But no. It has no weapons. Instead, the Prometheus and it's one hand held flamethrower must engage the ion drive and ram the engineer's ship. What's that, you say? If the Prometheus survived the ordeal than how would Shaw and David come to take the journey they did? How about the Prometheus shooting at the ship taking off, then an unexpectedly massive explosion due to some sort of alien technology results in debris hitting them and destroying the Prometheus? Same outcome, once again less stupid.

These solutions are just things some dude on the internet (me) came up with while typing this. Scott had years.

There's other stuff but I'm tired of typing now.

The copilots should have been removed from the script, they serve no purpose to the story.
