I'm well pleased with mine after one week of ownership. The styling of the 7100 is the same as the top of the line 8000 model. I visited BB to look at the Panny VT50 and style wise the 7100 and up Samsungs win in my opinion. Picture quality wise I'm coming from several years of owning a plasma and while they are hard to beat I think this LED may win the test for me. The jury is still out till I get it fully adjusted to my preferences but so far so good. The advantage of buying at Costco is 90'days to return and 1 extra year of warranty.

There are some good tips here on initial picture settings. I'll post my intial seat of the pants settings soon.

I did get a Chance to watch some Directv 3D recordings today and I was pleasantly surprised 3D was very good and 2D to 3D was very watchable in my brief viewing of a few minutes of a baseball game, a motocross race and the tv drama Dallas.

Was wondering what a few of you guys had for your settings ex: contrast, backlight, brightness, gamma etc.i just have mine in the standard mode. Thanks for your help and time.

I posted my settings earlier in the thread, however I have been messing with them lately as I have been reading that you can dial back contrast (I am using Standard mode), which in turns allows above ideal white to be seen; this adds additional punch in scenes that have sparkle, such as light reflecting from a chandelier.

Also, standard mode over saturates color, so you need to adjust it down considerably, or start with movie mode, which is closer to the 6500k reference level which will need less adjustments. Basically you can adjust any mode to where it needs to be, movie starts you off closer, but I like that standard gets me a punchier picture although it may not technically be as accurate, for instance I have gamma set to -2 to compensate for standard mode.

I too started with Standard mode, of course since it is default. But after watching for a few hours, both my wife and I agreed that it appeared a bit desaturated. Moving over to Natural was a big improvement for us. A couple of tweaks of the setting and we are good to go. Blu-rays are viewed in Movie mode to preserve that film look.

Any interest in my settings specifics or are all of you good to go?

Sure share the settings you have come up with. I have found that for me adjusted standard mode for general viewing and tweaked natural mode for sports works pretty well. Still have work to do on the movie mode settings as it seems a little to hazy, kind of like looking at a smokey bar scene.

I would turn your backlight way down (13 at the highest with a very bright room), unless you are watching 3D content having the backlight at 17 is going to kill your black level.

Also, I noticed that you said your colors appeared desaturated when you were in Standard. I would go with Standard over Natural as it makes an unrealistic picture I think. Try keeping the same setting but switch to Standard and change your color from Standard to Warm2 and I think you will notice a big color improvement and have a much more accurate and realistic looking picture.

I notice a lot of people are using Dynamic Contrast and Black Tone. I currently have both of them off as when I was setting up they were crushing black levels according to test patterns; I have also read numerous websites about calibrating your picture and all of them say to turn them off. Minus test patterns, does anyone notice a loss of shadow detail by enabling either of those settings? Just curious what you all think is the cost/benefit to using those pieces of post processing software.

Elmo45,

Thank you for your suggestions. Getting the "right" picture adjustments on a new set is never easy and always a work in progress before presto, that's the ticket! I went back to your Post #74 and instituted your suggestions. They do look natural and I am going to give them a try for a while.

Anyways, I do like that big hunk of eye candy.

I have not been using movie mode picture setting as it was to hazy, kind of like every scene was shot in a smokey bar. I just entered the settings from cnet for the ES8000 for movie mode and my intial impresion is that it has greatly improved the picture. I may still need to tweak it a bit but it is much closer. I may go back to clear for motion control but for now I'll use their custom setting.

I'm suprised the settings for the ES8000 look as goood as they do on my 7100 but they do look much better imo. So now I'm close on Standard and Movie mode settings. I'll probably use Natural for sports but it still needs some work.

A little off subject - mods please move if needed.

I noticed there was a really good deal on the 55" 7100 yesterday online - stupid me I didn't buy it. Anyway, price is back up today. Wondering if it was just a one day sale or if there was some sort of Olympics sale starting. Any thoughts? Would love to pick up the 7100 for a great price, otherwise I might have to save some cash and get the 6500. I haven't seen anything for sales per the upcomming Olympics - has anyone seen anything?
Thanks!

How much and where?
I started a thread about this, but thought maybe it belonged here instead:

I just picked up the 60" 7150 set yesterday from Costco to replace a Panasonic 50" plasma. The plasma was wall mounted and I'd like to reuse the mount on the Samsung. The bolts I was using are the right thread diameter, but they're twice a long as the new TV is thick. Obviously, this won't work biggrin.gif. What length bolt do I need for this set? The owner's manual states that I need an M8 machine screw, but doesn't indicate the proper length. I'm just looking for maximum depth - once I know that I can figure out the actual length I need. Thanks in advance!

It depends on your wall mount as using a 3rd party mount (i.e. not made by Samsung) you need to use the provided circular spacers which add some length. I would use you old bolts and thread them in all the way (ensure the spacers are in as well), then measure how much bolt is sticking out, subtract that from the bolt length and there's the depth you need. Then get a bolt with that depth and after washers and the mount you should have a bolt that fits - if it's still too long you can always add more washers.. At least that is what I did and it worked really well as the bolts that came with my mount were too short.

If you are having trouble finding the right bolt length my mount said that the bolt must go in at least 3 full turns which turned out to be about 1/4 of an inch, but I would go for a 1/2 inch to be on the safe side.

Hello,

I just wanted to ask if purchasing this T.V. would be a huge improvement over the the previous model (UNXXD7000).

I'm debating between these two series of televisions, but there is an additional drawback to getting the older model. Apparently, they have already been discontinued and you can only find them online. Not a bad thing, but they told me all units have been returned to Samsung for an re-inspection and have been opened, but are not refurbished or "open-box" items.

Also, there's always a risk when purchasing from an online retailer. I was told that after accepting the package, any problems are between you and the manufacturer. I was really weary about this, but I (believe) that the warranty is for 1 year and Samsung is very generous in replacing faulty sets. There's a post by someone who got a new ES7100 to replace a faulty D7000.

Any info or help appreciated.

Thanks - it never crossed my mind to use my old bolts as depth gauges!
The old bolts are not designed for wall mounts, so don't use them as a guide.

I purchased a wall mount from monoprice and they had the correct bolts included as long as you used the spacers. Worked like a charm.

What are you using for motion control settings? I mainly use clear. But would like to know other options that will work and not have judder or blur and still get some of the benifits of motion control.

I absolutely hate the soap opera effect and have tried all the differnet settings to get rid of it, but nothing other than off works for me. So i have no benefit of motion control. I'll turn it back on when football begins.

Has anyone used dual view through the Samsung Smart View app and the UN46ES7100?

I received a Galaxy Tab 2 with it for free, and is seems like dual view won't work.

Quick search makes it seem like the 7100 is not compatible for dual view... but why?

Does the Samsung Smart View App even work with the ES7100? On the Google Play web page, it says..

Supported Models:
Models greater or equal to LED ES7500

Curious though why it doesn't support this TV.
