Is it just me or do these LED sets improve after a few weeks? I knew plasmas improve with usage but never thought a LED would improve with age. Maybe it is a combination of settling on some settings and panel age but man the picture is even more impressive now than when my 7100 was new.

Yes, the more I use mine the better the picture looks. eek.gif

These panels supposedly take about 3 weeks to break-in according to Nitra on the ES8000 thread. So that should improve PQ and things such as clouding lessen.
Got mine from Amazon. It's a 46 and it was delivered by UPS! Ugh. The delivery driver slumped it down on it's side edge when he asked me to sign for the delivery. Why oh why is Amazon using UPS for this?

Upon inspection there were two holes in the box, one clear through to the panel. Miraculously the panel was not cracked and the set works. In fact, except for the bottom left corner being a little brighter on dark scenes it's as good as the best of 10 of my 55" D8000's from last year,

Unfortunately my wife noticed while we were moving the set that the back panel was dented in. I managed to pull it out with a suction cup but it's still pretty warped. that'll affect resale value.

Problem is, the picture is pretty darn good and clouding is minimal for a set of this type. There IS one small red pixel that is dead on a pixel test but you can't see it during viewing.

I am just certain if I return this set I'll get a replacement with severe clouding and other anomolies. Not sure what to do. If the back weren't bent up I wouldn't even consider exchanging it.

Shame on UPS for mishandling a clearly fragile item...and shame on Amazon for using UPS to deliver a 46" flat screen!
Exchange it, the dent may be cosmetic or perhaps it bumped a component inside and will cause it to fail early, no way to tell. I wouldn't take the risk.

Don't worry too much about clouding (which is about the only consistent problem with this set) as mine had some pretty bad clouding but after breaking it in for 3 weeks it reduced significantly to the point where it isn't noticeable.
Agree return it. If you can bump your budget a bit Costco has a bundle with a 55" 7150 with keyboard and a Samsung Tablet for and addtional $450. Costco adds a extra 1 year warranty at no charge as well. With a total of 5yrs if you buy the extended warranty for $99 . You also have 90 days to return and no worries with UPS delivery thru Costco.

Yeah. I think I will exchange it. Bummer though. I need a 46 as it's the biggest I can fit in my office. A 42" would be even better. Would love to get a 46" at Costco but they only seem to have 55" and 60"

Bummer indeed, as it seems these edge lite LEDs are a bit hit and miss with quality issues. Hopefully you will get a good one. But you would be kicking yourself if you have problems after you can't return it. In general the 7100s seem to have fewer issues reported, good luck!

I just got a ES7100 from best buy and have had it for about two weeks and my cable provider is Comcast. I have the HD package but when I watch ESPN the it seems like the PQ gets really fuzzy when they show replays of football games or interviews with players. Does this happen to anyone else? Also my seems to be a little lighter on one side of the TV when the screen is black but isn't really that noticable when the screen has colors on it. Has anyone else dealt with this? Does anyone know if there is a solution for this?
for those with the 7100, does the problem the 8000 series has (regarding micro dimming) happen for this set too?

ie, can you turn micro dimming on in movie mode?

Thanks

No issue on ESPN on my 7100. What is your set up and settings? It has been recommended by some that if you use a av reciever that you turn off its video processing as it seems to many components processing the signal can cause problems. It also maybe a Comcast issue. I use Directv.

I just got it and haven't changed any settings. I have the TV in movie mode but haven't really changed any other settings. Are there any that you would recommend?

I've had mine about 5 weeks and have tried a variety of settings but am very pleased with these. Keep in mind all sets and room conditions vary. You may need different setting to suit you preferences. Also other picture modes have there place for sports and movies but standard is pretty versital.

Pic mode: Standard
Backlight: 10... if you adjust this the Eco-sensor will turn off and you have to turn it back on. So adjust BL first.
Contrast: 75....high settings wash out color and reduce viewing angles
Brightness: 45...less than 45 Ecosensor is off
Sharpness: 30 ...has little effect
Color: 49
Tint: 50-50
Screen adjustment: 16:9 or screen fit
Advanced Settings
Dynamic contrast: high
Black tone : dark
Flesh tone: +2
Rgb: off
Color space: auto
Gamma: -2
Motion lighting: off
Picture options: warm 1
Digital noise filter: auto
MPEG filter: auto
Film mode: auto1
Auto motion plus: clear
LED motion plus: on

System
Eco solution
Energy saving: off
Eco sensor: on
Minimum backlight: 6

I found that having any video processing turned on on my Yamaha AV receiver contributed to motion and judder issues. I guess it creates a conflict with the TV that is processing with film mode, motion control etc... so use one or the other but not both.

Get a setup/calibration disc, such as Disney's WOW or DVE or they have a free one on the forum. I would start with standard mode and go from there...

I think we have the same issue as from what I read in the ES8000 thread the TV (ES8000 at least) was designed to have micro-dimming off in movie mode according to Nitra's info from his correspondence with Samsung. I would suspect our TV sharing similar DNA would be the same for us. Subjectively I notice that my blacks are more washed out in movie mode and I also have more clouding in movie mode, I believe because micro-dimming isn't compensating.

Have you tried disabling dynamic contrast and black tone and then turning up your contrast (turn up using test pattern before clipping)? This might enable you to increase your contrast and avoid washing out color and killing your viewing angle.

The idea of using lower contrast settings came from Nitra?? over on the ES8000 thread. It seems to work better on my set with a range of 75-82. I cannot stand for peoples faces to look like they are 2 feet from a super bright light or for a scene to appear hazy, smokey etc... I had this with some shows with higher contrast settings 90+. I'll double check the dynamic contrast and black level settings but I think I've had them off before and found little effect with my changes, dark tone can cause issues if set to high. I had it set via test patterns and ended up modifying those settings to what I posted for personal preference.
I looked into the ES8000 thread and found the information I referenced above, link is below. Interesting info on the contrast setting. Elmo, Nitra agrees with you on the Dynamic contrast setting. I'll experiment and see if I like it on or off. But I do like the lower contrast setting. The picture is just more consistent with a variety of programing. My room is pretty dark so this does make a difference.

Cool - all about what looks good to you and makes you happy, just thought I'd suggest something different to consider.

I do appreciate the idea, and may try it again in the future. I don't claim to be an expert. I enjoy learning the various combinations of settings that provide the best picture and we all may have a little different take on what that best picture may be. As you said what ever makes you happy with the picture. I welcome suggestions.

Now that we've got a couple weeks under our belt with the 7100, we are extremely happy with it! During the first few days, we did notice flash-lighting in the corners during movies, but after tweaking the display and hanging it on the wall, its basically gone. As for any uneven or cloudy issues, this set has not had any since day one...I'm wondering if we just got lucky?

My biggest complaint was the limited viewing angles, which was easily corrected by taking the contrast down to 80 and enabling the dynamic contrast control (low/medium). This has really improved the overall picture quality and greatly reduced the washout issue when viewing it from off center seating in our room.
As i feared the replacement sucks. the viewing angles are poorer on this set and it almost seems like this one contains a different panel or something. The bottom left quadrant is so much brighter than the rest of the screen it's distracting, and I cant seem to get any settings that look good. The settings from my last one don't apply at all.

Weird thing is, the serial # is only 9 away from the first.

So you guys say the flashlighting gets better after a few weeks?

bummer.

sorry to hear that. We've had our set for almost 3-4 weeks now and the flash-lighting is pretty much gone (although there was not much when it was brand new)....not sure if it was time (break in) or me tweaking the settings.

That stinks and The panel lottery no matter what brand is probably why I will keep what i have. I had given some thought to trying a less expensive tv, but now I don't think so. I' very pleased with mine so far.

What are your settings, some have had luck by trying lower brightness and contrast settings as it aids viewing angles and decreases the quality flaws somewhat. I think my 7150 looks better now than when it was new but that is a combination of better settings and maybe some panel aging, and it never had noticeably bad flashlighting. Also I have read posts of changes for the better after wall mounting. Not sure that is something to count on.

I thought it was just me, but when I mounted my 7100 on the wall, I swear the uniformity improved as well as less flash-lighting...might be tied to where the pressure is applied on the TV?
My tv picked up the new firmware 1017.4 on my request today, downloaded and will see if I notice any changes.
