blown reciever?

Yesterday I pluged in my ipod cord . I had a big loud crakeling sound and then the reciever turned off.. Not it won't turn back on. Is this a sign of a blown receiver.? I tried to unplug and reset , but nothing. Someone was saying something about a fuse but I have no idea where that is located. I get a little nervous about opening up electronics.
Just not sure where to turn at this point. All connections seem fine as I haven't touched them since this happened. I was listening to the ipod earlier in day and everything was fine.
Thanks

What brand and model is it? These's a good chance that if you heard something pop that it will need service.
