No, it is not. As I think I said all the way back at the beginning, I do not normally listen at Spinal Tap levels, so it really should not be overheating, especially since the receiver sits on an open shelf with at least four inches of clearance above and nothing but daylight to the sides. Speaker sensitivity is 90db for the fronts and 89db for the rest. Seems to me that the most logical explanation is that none of this is really happening!

When the box gets full throw some of the out of date stuff away. Of course you will still have to keep track of where the box is located. biggrin.gif

Little children have idiot mittens with a little string of yarn on each one running up one sleeve and down the other. The person who invents a grown up version of idiot mittens that works on microphones and everything else that goes lost will be a very rich woman indeed.

Meanwhile, I have drawers full of computer and audio cables, but no matter how many I throw away, nor how many times I look, none of them will turn into the missing microphone.

OK, I finally tried resetting the microprocessor, with an unexpected result. The system had been on for a while, and did not get all that loud when turned to 0db. Upon reset, it still did not get all that loud at 0db, but I discovered that zero was no longer the highest setting. I do not know how high it will go (it should go to 11, if Nigel Tufnel has any say in the matter), but I do know it will get a lot louder now.

What I'd missed was that under Options, the Volume Control was limited to 0. When I'd poked around the various settings with the remote in the past (no manual in hand from this open box purchase, and too lazy/cheap to print the PDF in another room) I'd seen the Volume Control setting, but the only choices I noticed were 0db, -10db and -20db. I never saw the Off option. I assume it got set to 0db either before I purchased it (open box), or else as part of the Audyssey setup.

I feel a little silly about this result, but I suspect I will get over it! Now to either track down a setup mic locally or use jdsmoothie's provided ebay links to order one. Thanks everyone for your time and suggestions.

I don't recall you ever mentioning the AVR was "open box" (or perhaps I just missed it), but we generally suggest resetting the microprocessor on any AVR that is not new to ensure any previous settings are restored to their factory default settings. Also, note that although the volume will now go to +18db, it's generally NOT recommended to go above 0db (which is likely why the previous owner had the Volume Limit set to 0db as the factory default is OFF) to avoid the AVR shutting down in protection mode.

Hmm, should I consider the unit defective, or just turn it up past zero when the volume fades out on me? I realize that is probably a question with no real answer, but opinions would be appreciated?

Just a follow up comment on my situation, I did pop open the top of my 687 (previously incorrectly identified as 587) and found the fuses to be in good working condition. While closing it back up I noticed that the main on/off switch had been pushed out to the off position, and once I pushed it back in the unit came back to life again!

Apparently my toddler had been toying with my equipment recently and must've pushed the button out. I felt silly that this didn't occur to me before, though it has been 5 years since I last used that button to turn it on. In this confusion I even ended up ordering the 3312 from Amazon this AM, guess I should upgrade anyway and relegate my 687 to computer duty!
