Pre/Pro or AV Receiver??

I have a 7.1 system setup and value music quality much more than video and "gadgets". Currently running an older Marantz setup and LOVE its ability to playback music in both 2ch and SACD and DVD-Audio formats.

Would you choose:

Marantz AV-7005 with Emotiva XPA-5 and and a 2 channel amp

Denon 4311ci and Emotiva XPA-3 to drive front 3 channels and rest for surrounds.

Let me know your thoughts. Not sure if the Denon would sound as good.

I would chose the 4311 (which I own) as I feel it sounds excellent with music. The 4311 has Audyssey XT32 opposed to just XT in the AV7005 which is a nice bonus. The 4311 replaced an Onkyo 886 prepro that to me did not sound the best for 2CH music. I used a Parasound 2100 with HT Bypass for 2CH music and the 886 handled MCH music and HT. But since I bought the 4311 I have not used the 2100 and will most likely sell it.

I'm sure the AV7005 is a great sounding prepro but I would not hesitate to buy the 4311. You could start out using the amps in the 4311 to see if an external amp is even needed. If you feel the need then add the XPA-3. I'm using the 4311 as a prepro with a Boston Acoustics A7200 (Sherwood A-965 clone) as I already had the amp. Either way both are very good choices smile.gif.

I say get a Onkyo 818 and the XPA-5.

I suppose the contenders would be Denon, Marantz, Yamaha, Anthem, and perhaps the Pioneer Elite Receivers. I see very little on the Pioneers here yet I heard the SC-55 and was impressed by its amp. Any thoughts?
