Buying Blu Ray Discs, newbie ques:

Ordering my First BD player. When I go about purchasing or renting BD's what do I look for in referrence to How it's recorded? I'm non-tech, but I seemed to have gleaned from the forums that the actual discs can vary in quality, some because their older, or just a manufacturers decision, and I want to at least have a way of identifying a disc that is better quality. Perhaps its indicated on the actual BD Box, etc.

Thanks.

You can only find out by reading reviews. The manufacturers really aren't interested in telling you when their workmanship is shoddy.

Ratings of picture quality can be found in http://www.avsforum.com/t/1168342/the-new-pq-tier-thread-for-blu-ray-rankings

Ratings of audio quality can be found in http://www.avsforum.com/t/1190265/new-audio-tier-thread

Thanks, I get what you mean. I was thinking when I see an older BD, it might be designated as a "re mastered" or some identification that it didn't start as a Blu Ray disc. Or even a referrence to a discs technical attributes, so to speak. Kind of like when I used to buy Telarc cd's cause of the better audio recording.
Thanks for the link, I will check the reviews and info. You've helped me quite a bit as I've been posting lately, really appreciate your expertise. I went ahead and splurged for the Panny 500, should get it today. Can't wait to listen to my cd's, then build a moderately priced surround sound system, then really enjoy BD movies since I've never seen a BD at home. Fun!

Oh, quick update. The link you gave is really great, does speak to some of my "quality to look for" concerns. Leave to AVS forums to inform!

Also, Home Theater Magazine does monthly reviews of all the popular BD releases.

Correct, I subscribe to Home Theater Magazine and Sound & Vision print magazines. Both have Blu-ray reviews. Wide Screen Review used to have extensive Blu-ray reviews but I have let my subscription lapse so can not speak for current versions.
