The "Official" Yamaha AVENTAGE RX-A1020, RX-A2020 and RX-A3020 Thread - Page 8

Another RX-A3020 question: the manual says it supports HDMI Control (CEC mode). The Sony PS3 (which I am using as my BD player) claims to also support HDMI-CEC. Has anyone gotten the RX-A3020 remote to work (via HDMI) with a Sony PS3? Thanks.
Nope. Your receiver won't send remote control like commands to other devices over HDMI, and I'm pretty sure that the PlayStation 3 doesn't respond to these sorts of commands either.

What works, if if HDMI CEC is enabled on your receiver and PS3 and you turn your PS3 on the receiver will switch to the input the PS3 is connected to. With CEC also enabled on your TV then when you turn on your PS3, your TV may also turn on and/or switch to the receiver's input

Similarily turning off your TV may result in your receiver and PS3 turning off automatically. The PS3 will only turn off automatically if you're not playing a game or doing anything special.

Enabling CEC may also cause things you don't want to happen, like the TV telling the receiver to switch its input to the TV's audio when you turn on your PS3.

According to this manual page the PS3 appears capable of two-way control from a Sony TV with the Sync feature and this is realized using HDMI-CEC. All I'm really interested in is turning on the PS3; from there I'll control it through an USB/IR dongle.

I just about have this sorted. My current configuration is: Panasonic TC-P65VT50 TV, Sony PS3 Slim w/ System 4.30, RX-A3020. The PS3 is connected to HDMI input 1 (BD/DVD) on the A3020. The A3020's HDMI output 1 is connected to HDMI input 2 (ARC) on the TV.

First, as page 158 in the A3020 manual says, turn on all three components. On the PS3, navigate to Settings->System Settings->Control for HDMI and set to "on". On the A3020, navigate to On Screen->Settings->HDMI->HDMI Control and select "On". Note the folder icon which indicates another level of settings. If you click "On" again you will be able to enable ARC (which allows audio from the TV to play back through the A3020) as well as the A3020 input to which the TV audio is mapped (AUDIO 1 by default).

On my TV, I had to navigate to Menu->Setup->VIERA Link settings. I set VIERA Link to "On", Power on link and Power off link both to "Yes", and Default speakers to "Theater". The last step is crucial, as the PS3 audio will go to the TV speakers otherwise.

Now, when I select SCENE 1 from the A3020 remote, it turns on the A3020, PS3, TV, and selects input AV 1. The PS3 home screen is displayed (just as if I'd pressed the "PS" button on the PS3 Bluetooth remote). The A3020 remote now controls all the basic PS3 functions:
Navigation, Enter, Fwd, Rev, Play, Pause, etc. I truly have a "one remote" system.

The next thing I need to figure out is how to change the Sound Program Mode for SCENE 1. It is set to "SciFi" by default.

After reading page 62 in the manual for the 33rd time, I finally realized that I just need to set up the A3020 assignments as I want them and hold down a given SCENE button until the TV screen shows "Setting Complete". After that the SCENE button will use the new assignments.

One additional note on the previous post. When the TV is shut off it will cause the PS3 to be shut off *unless* the PS3 is playing a disc or is in game mode. Either of those activities must be terminated before the PS3 can be shut down via HDMI-CEC.

I stand corrected. I never knew Yamaha receivers supported sending remote control commands over HDMI. It looks like they added that feature to last year's models, but I never heard of any one using it up until now.

Hopefully then you won't get any of the undesired side-effects of having HDMI CEC enabled, like the receiver switching to AUDIO1 unexpectedly.

I meant to add that ARC works as expected with the above setup. Watching content from the Internet on the TV causes the A3020 to automatically select the AUDIO 1 input.

The only glitch I am currently experiencing is that after re-programming SCENE 2 to use input from AV 2 (a Tivo Premiere XL) the remote remains controlling AUDIO 1 (the default input setting for SCENE 2). I'll continue to investigate this but it may be a software bug. The workaround is simple enough; I just have to press the AV 2 button to control the Tivo.

I know that the big variable in all this is the TV and that YMMV, but I did want to report that it seems to work well with VIERA Link.

The remote control doesn't know that you've reassigned the input that corresponds to the scene. If you've programmed the remote to control the TiVo directly after AV 2 is pressed then hold down both the AV2 and SCENE 2 buttons together for more than three seconds.

Thanks, that solved it. Now I've read page 62 twice more...

I connected my A3020 to the network today and thought I'd offer some impressions as well as answers to previous posts. The first thing I did was to update the firmware to 1.41 over the network via On Screen->Information->System. The A3020 detected and reported that an update was available and I was prompted to press "Enter" to begin the 20 min update. This went without a hitch. At the end of the process, the front panel prompts the user to "Power Down". However, the Receiver On/Off button on the remote seemed to have no effect. I pressed the Main Zone On/Off button on the front panel and that seemed to turn the unit *on*. No worries; I cycled the power again and everything seemed normal. Previous settings were preserved. The link to the update and manual supplements is here.

Confirmed. Rhapsody, Sirius, and Pandora are accessed by repeatedly pressing the NET button on the remote. Also available in the rotation are AirPlay, SERVER, and NET RADIO.

Confirmed. I accessed the AirPlay feature from iTunes on my laptop as well as from my iPhone. The default name presented by the receiver is "RX-A3020 ######" where ###### are the six low-order hex digits of the receiver's MAC address. This name can be changed via On Screen->Setup->Network->Network Name but I'd recommend against that (see next answer).

Confirmed. This is documented in "Supplement for Web Control" on the CD-ROM. A by-product of having AirPlay on the receiver means that it implements Apple's Bonjour service discovery protocols. You can discover the web interface for the receiver by name using the Bonjour->Webpages bookmark in the Safari browser, or in other browsers by entering a variant of the network name "http://rx-a3020-######.local." (Replace ###### with your specific digits.)

You must first play something via NET RADIO before vtuner.com becomes aware of your MAC address. After that, you can enter it in the format displayed by On Screen->Information->Network. After that, you can register for a tuner.com account, add stations and podcasts to your NET RADIO Bookmarks, etc.

In case anyone is interested, check out Newegg for the A2020 or A 3020. I bought the A2020 and received a $710 Gift Card. Plan on buying some stuff and turning around and selling it to bring the cost of the receiver below $1000. Offer good through the 30th.

Help - AVENTAGE RX-A1020 is a paper weight...

Performed the FW update as the system said it was available so natually I followed the instruction - wired LAN connection.

Towards the end the screen came up with 'Error 2000' and then when I tried to power it on it then read 'ROM Error'

I searched the web and came across this thread and followed the instructions to perform a USB restore (formatted the USB stick fresh with FAT32 formatting) which has now resulted in the screen reading 'Device Error'.... eek.gif

Not happy - system is two weeks old only and there is not much support on Yamaha's websites that I can find about it frown.gif

Any advice appreciated!

OKAY Crisis over but here is some useful help;

I found another USB stick (1Gb), formatted it using just FAT system (not FAT 32 or NFTS) and recopied the .bin file to the stick. SHoudl note I formatted it on a Windows machine and not my MAC just to be safe.

Stuck it in the Yamaha and followed the normal upgrade instructions and voila - success.

Its about three hours of my life I don't get back though!!

Yamaha could do a little better in providing more online support for this know problem (its noted on their Australian website for the product)

The link to the firmware download that I provided previously does provide some help for troubleshooting. You may have to press "select" to see it listed.

Maybe someone can help me here. Here's what I got, Aventage 2020, rti12, rti10, cs2 series 2 center, 2x psw505, all polk. I was wondering a couple of things since I have not set the system up yet.
1. Is the CS2 a good match for the other rtis?
2. With the 2020 can I biamp the front and rear or just the fronts? Don't need a zone2, just want a KICK ASS 7.1. I know I don't have the speakers for a 7.1 yet but as soon as I find the polk fxiA6 at a deal I will have them also. Thanks a bunch for any info. One other thing, the room is 10x14... hehe.
If you want to bi-amp the surrounds or rear surrounds you'll need to use a external amplifier that supports bi-amping. The receiver doesn't it support directly.

is it me - or are the hometheater.com measured results for SNR and Crosstalk for the 1020 up with the best I've seen for a receiver - especially anywhere near this price

Yes on both counts. From the Top Level menu, select Main. From there you can select Scenes or Inputs to control. USB appears to be more functional than AirPlay in that it supports browsing. I haven't yet discovered if browsing a music source is possible via AirPlay.

I am looking to buy a yamaha a3020 receiver and I have a question I need answered. I'm thinking of running two rooms or zones off the receiver. One zone would be the main tv with 7.1 surround sound and biamp the fronts for a total of 9.2 channels used. I would have all of my sources connected to the receiver there and have one hdmi out go to the tv in that room and another connect to a second reciever, the yamaha a3000. This would then power 7.1 worth of speakers and a video out from that to a tv in the other room. From what I understand, the a3020 can run either the same source on both tvs or two different sources at the same time. My question is about audio and isn't clear in the manual. Is it possible to get full 7.1 capable audio (depending on the source) to both tvs? What restrictions are there? To me it seems it would work for everything except the same source in which case room two gets down mixed to two channel. Please let me know

And the trigger was pulled, though I ended up going with a AX-1020 as the 2020 was out of stock. Plus, I was only interested in the 2020 due to the HQV Vida, but I used the money "saved" to buy a Framemeister for my classic gaming consoles (which is primarily what the Vida would've been scaling). So, best of both worlds! Now I was wondering if anyone in this thread had some recommendations for a set of 5.1 bookshelf speakers that would pair nicely with my new receiver? I don't have a large room and won't be able to drive at high volumes, but I want something that'll sound phenomenal. Not afraid to spend a bit if I need to!

Can anyone help with my Rx-A3020,my setup is at 9.2 channels with all Yamaha Speakers(NS-777x2)(NS-333x6) YST 315 sub(NS-C444) and a Klipch sub. I have had the receiver for 2 months or so, it's the first time I was listening to it today at high volumes as I have been slowly breaking it in. I can not go past -7.5 without the receiver shutting down, especially when I have a movie playing, I tried tron several times and when the seen starts where the aperture is ignited(A scene which gets louder and louder with a higher and low frequency it just shuts down, I can get it to play at -7.5 max, but from what I understand Im supposed to be able to go to +16.5. I checked each speaker, they are all connected properly, in phase, I tried YPAO settings, I tried it with and without presence speakers on, I tried Straight, No matter what It shuts down when I try to play it loud, is something wrong with my New receiver? I also tried unplugging my speakers one by one, and the subs, I had it to where no speakers were plugged in, and could hear nothing, it was very cold and the receiver has plenty of air to breath out in the open. Yet it still shut off when playing at anything above -7.5 on tron when the aperture opens and he gets ported to tron land.... Why is it doing this??? I don't know much about surround sound, I checked all the wires, nothing lose or frayed, but as I said even with no speakers plugged in it shuts Down.

I have just recently setup my rx-a1020 and love it. I am working on integrating it into my universal remote (Redeye by Thinkflood) and was wondering if anyone has the YNCA documents for the xx20 series yet. I have been using the xx10 documents to good effect, but I have hit a wall in the @PC (DNLA streaming) section and want to eliminate command syntax as the source of my error. Also, I am looking forward to implementing Airplay, which obviously wouldn't have been in the old documents.

Thanks for the help!

I have been able to tie in my PS3 via HDMI-CEC (Anynet+, VieraLink, et al.) with reasonable results. Once it was enabled on the PS3, rx-a1020, and (optionally) the screen, the system worked fairly automatically. Using the stock remote, most of the PS3 controller buttons are mapped:

PS3 ---> Remote
Up Up
Down Down
Left Left
Right Right
Triangle Top Menu
Square Pop-up Menu
X Enter
O Stop
Play Play
Pause Pause
Stop Stop
PS3 Mode

I am still working on the triggers (L-R 1-2) and the Select Key.
