The format of YNCA status messages and commands is very similar so while you're connected to the receiver usng YNCA switch to the "SERVER" input and use the remote.

Also, I am looking forward to implementing Airplay, which obviously wouldn't have been in the old documents.

I'm not sure there's much you can do with AirPlay from the receiver end, it's meant to be controlled from the other end.

As I think I mentioned in previous posts, AirPlay can be controlled from both the xx20
remote as well as the receiver web interface. However, it is not as functional as having
the music source connected via USB (AirPlay does not appear to support browsing of
the music source whereas USB does).

You must hit "Play Control" on the right of the display and then you will see play, pause,
skip rev, and skip fwd controls on screen.

What I am doing is generally sending "Now Playing" info and menu navigation to my Redeye remotes to be displayed. In YNCA terms, @HDRADIO:SONG=?, @NETRADIO:LINE1TXT=?, etc. I am hoping to find @AIRPLAY:SONG=? will work, but I am not sure of the syntax (and any other data it might provide) so that is why I wanted the updated xx20 YNCA docs.

I have got my @HDRADIO controls fully worked out, and am working my way through the menu navigation of @NETRADIO. It all works fine. I plan on doing a clone of my @NETRADIO modified for @PC so I can navigate the DNLA streaming menus on my Redeye remote, but I cannot get any @PC commands to work. Even a simple command such as @PC:AVAIL=? is not returning any data. I don't know if they changed that syntax or if I have another error, but something is wrong.

While I admit the triggers are more an effort at completeness, the select key is useful for finding timestamp info during video playback etc.

If you press "Top Menu" on the xx20 remote while controlling the PS3, a bunch of icons
appear. Navigating to and selecting the top right icon, which looks like "i+", seems to
give the same display as the Select key on the PS3 remote.

It seems that the L1 and R1 keys on the PS3 remote replicate << and >> respectively
on the xx20 remote. L2 and R2 replicate |<< and >>| respectively.

Hey all,

long time member of another home theater forum, but a long time lurker here.

So I've got the A3020 that I also picked up from newegg with the $650 gift cert offer

I've had mine since mid December and its got the latest firmware...I also used the online firmware update and got a bricked unit until I found out how to do the emergency recovery via USB, etc

So anyways..I'm finding this unit is a bit buggy. Audio always defaults to Audio1 (cd), even if I previously had it set for Video1 or Video2
It will switch on, then the input will switch to CD1 all by its self.

Also, the HDMI out will not pass through at times. Example, I have my DirectTV hdmi plugged into one of the inputs, and the output from the receiver to my Sammy LED

Most of the time, I can just turn on the sammy screen and the direct tv box and get a signal just fine. SOMETIMES I get nothing until I turn on the receiver. I can turn off the receiver immediately and still maintain HDMI out.

As I said..this firmware is a bit buggy right now. I may try reloading the firmware once more..

Any thoughts?

thanks

Having owned Denon, Yamaha, Pioneer and sony in the past, Yamaha's were known to be somewhat brighter in sound over say Pioneer's and Denon's.
I think, with modern AVR's, that the sound quality is somewhat subjective and really depends on the sound programming built into each upper end receiver.
Most will be using burr brown dacs, most will offer a pure direct audio feature and for the most part, most will sound very similar.

If you want warm sound, play your vinyl smile.gif

For me, I feel the major comparison really comes down to price and feature set.

I prefer Pioneer Elite AVR's for the features, but the wife loved the Yamaha 3020's sound when paired with B&W 685 bookshelf speakers, so who am I to argue when in the end, I was able to buy a new AVR, Bluray player and a complete set of B&W speakers complete with WAF blessing.

You can't go wrong with a Denon, nor could you go wrong with a Yamaha.
Its going to come down to aesthetics and built in features me thinks.

I'd say go into a well equipped store and listen to them using the same speakers
have them close the listening room doors, hand you the remote and sit and close your eyes while listening
have the sales guy setup a denon and a yamaha to similar sound programming and have him switch between them without you knowing which one is playing.

decide for yourself what one sounds better to you because what may sound better to one person, will sound different to another.

wish that was possible al the stores that got both do not do this

even at the one i can get it for 1299 euro its the last one they got and they do not want it removed from the box at all :/
so im out off luck i always had onkyo like a fool everytime i stept into the trick and bam hdmi bugging the crap out of me had 3 now and each had hdmi problems so i basicly want out hearing that the yamaha got supperior build quality and i read some where it got a nice game pass trough * i do game a lot on my htpc and xbox 360* and tons of other features not to mention it supporting 8 ohms wich my speakers want * thats what the manual says anyway* if there both kinda similar then i think im going yamaha, hoping this time its the right choise and i can enjoy the thing for a good 5-10 years :P

Luckily we have magnolia high fi sound rooms locally here so we got to listen to both receivers with the same content.
we then went to a local Difinite Audio to audition the speakers and it was a choice, for us, between some Paradigms and the B&W's

Again, for me, I prefer Pioneer Elite, but the yes or no decision was held by the wife so we went Yammy. I'll admit the sound was clearer with the yammy 3020, but I've always been a fan of Pioneer and have had awesome luck with their gear. I just retired a very old VSX-26TX (had it for 12 years) It was time to put it to pasture.

I do dig airplay and now have a full house DLNA integration so now I am officially in the 21st century, unlike what I was with the 26tx

Sounds a common HDMI CEC behaviour. Your TV is telling the receiver to switch to the input assigned to the TV, and by default that's AUDIO1. You'll need to turn off HDMI Control in the receiver or the equivilent on the TV.

Could just be that the input was switched to something else. The next time this happens instead of turning on the receiver press, the input button that you've got the DirecTV box connected to. If it starts working then the input got switched to something else.

Just a quick note:

i got Netflix and Youtube to play through my 5.1 speakers rather than simply through the TV's speakers by following ideas posted above.

Some pearls:

I printed out the entire owner's manual (about a ream of paper) but this made it easier to flip to the important concepts.
Turning on each unit in the specific order is non-negotiable. I could only enable the important menu items upon turning on
units in the order that the manufacturer mandates.

Lovin' my Aventage 2020, this was an upgrade from a nine year old Sony unit. I'm really hearing B&W 600 series speakers
for the first time, nothing trumps pure undistorted amplification. When i watched the new Jason Bourne movie on BluRay,
the gun shots were realistic to perfection. Only quirk is that my B&W center channel (600 series) speaker seems to delivery
movie dialog in a murky, echo-hall-ish tone. I'm sure there are some settings to clean that up if anyone has a tip.

FYI, newegg is running some deals again. Proud new owner of a 1020! Picked mine up locally for 8 bills, coming from a aging AVR247, loving it so far.

In the past people have had success in phoning up Yamaha and asking for a printed copy.

I'm looking at the Aventage 1020 vs 2020. I don't anticipate using 9.2, so that's not a factor. The question I have is regarding the HQV video processing which it appears the 2020 has and the 1020 doesn't. I do anticipate getting a 4K display at some point, but I'm not sure if I'd be using the HQV processor. At this point I use HDMI pass-through on my current Yammy, which obviously requires no processing. All of my sources are HDMI enabled, so that's why I use the pass-through.

Does the HQV processing have some other benefits I'm not aware of or is it something I should consider for 2K to 4K upscaling (vs whatever upscaling the 4K display might have). Are there any other advantages in going with the 2020 vs the 1020?

Thanks guys.
The HQV chip offers significantly better upscaling than Yamaha's implementation, but Yamaha's implemenation isn't that great. I much prefer my TV's upscaling over my HQV-less receiver's.

Whether the upscaling in the RX-A2020 would be better than a hypothetical 4K TV you might buy in the future no one can say, especially since it often comes down to personal preference. However, I expect that 4K TVs will remain high-end equipment for a long time and so I don't see them cheaping out on their video processing capabilities.
Direct video is preferred for me, so Im in the camp where by the time 4k is relevant to most people, everyone here will want a new receiver or have a new one anyways with dozens more features. So the 1020 was a no brainer for me over the two higher models.
Guys, on the 1020, does the pass-through pass whatever is fed to it untouched? IOW, is 1080i passed as 1080i, 720p as 720p and 1080p as 1080p? I know Home Theater loved the audio but gave it a poor video rating. The review was a bit unclear about how the pass-through actually worked.

I just purchased the RX-A2020 receiver, and ran into a problem on the second movie I have watched.

While watching the recently release BatMan The Dark Knight Rises, the receiver will power off completely.

I am able to reliably repeat the issue under exact conditions. In a nutshell, it will shut off even with only the HDMI cable from the blu-ray player plugged in and playing a certain scene, and all speaker cables REMOVED (I did this to eliminate the possibility of a bad wire, bad speaker, excessive power draw, etc.).

Its odd that the problem seems to be a combination of the DTS HD decoding COMBINED with the set volume level.

Could anyone else try playing this scene (the plane fly over at 3:43) and see if it shuts off your RX-A2020 at a volume level of 0?

Thanks!

Here are my testing notes:
  • Shuts off on dark knight rises (so far, -I've only seen it with this movie, all other movies I tried worked fine)
  • The same exact spot on the blu ray will repeatedly cause power off
  • The first shut off spot is between 3:43 and 3:44 in, it shuts off at several other spots throughout movie
  • Shuts off with all cables removed from receiver (removed everything but HDMI from bluray). In other words, all speaker cables were even removed.
  • Only shuts off at volume levels louder than -2 at this spot. Lower volume levels play this scene without any issue.
  • Shuts off regardless of HDMI port used
  • Shuts off regardless of blu ray player used (Used 2 different ones)
  • It does NOT shut off with the 2 channel Dolby audio track, it only shuts off with the English DTS HD track
  • It does NOT shut off when played on a PS3 that passes 5.1 channel PCM to the receiver
  • I updated the firmware when I received the unit, and the unit says that no firmware update is available.
  • I also own an RX-V473 and the problem is not reproducible on this receiver.

I submitted a support request on Yamaha's website, but have not heard back.

.

The PDF version is really not so bad once you get that the contents and page references in the text are clickable and take you right to the topic.

I contacted Yamaha regarding my displeasure with the RX-A3020 not including a paper manual, they replied back that they will mail me a manual within 10 days.
I wonder if posts 238 and 265 are the same issue? Would changing the max volume setting do anything?

I really like the audio quality of the 2020, replacing an rx-v1500 especially teamed with a large Samsung 8000 tv and surprisingly even with monoprice ceiling speakers. Gunshots reverberate nice and loud and mp3 sounds live.

One negative is that the Yamaha wireless adaptor drops the signal whereas the Samsung wireless is flawless.
Just wondering... regarding the shut down problems... are you running in ECO mode?

No problem on my 2020 so far and this includes driving the system to the point of flickering protection circuits in the speakers.
I have tried with Eco mode off and on, no difference in the results. Tonight it powered off with The Incredibles bluray, during a very challenging scene.

I called Yamaha today, they provided no help and suggested I send it to a Service Center, or that I return/exchange the unit.

I bought the receiver on NewEgg with the $710 gift card deal. They are now out of stock, so the only option with them is a refund. If I risk the service center, then the time it takes to get a resolution may go past my return window with NewEgg.

Do you happen to have (or could rent) The Dark Knight Rises, and have a bluray player capable of passing the full DTS-HD soundtrack? I'd love to know if your system can handle the 3:43-3:44 section at a volume level of 0. If it can, I think Id risk the service center route. I think the receiver is great in every other way.
