I don't think I ever saw a distribution like that, at least not in a non holiday sales week.

Well from time to time we get some of that data historically.

if the title has showed up on the Nielsen Videoscan first alert chart Blu-ray Top 20 list for the week, it has an index number that gives its unit sales in relation to the unit sales of the leading title. Since we always get an estimate for the leading Blu-ray title each week, we can get an estimate then for any title that has a Blu-ray index number.

Also if any title shows up on the BD Title share chart (that's a combination of the concurrently released titles with the highest Blu-ray unit marketshare off the first alert report which goes 50 titles deep) plus what's on the Top 20 Sellers chart (combined DVD+BD sales) we get an Blu-ray marketshare percentage for its sales for the week. Often times the title may show up on the The-Numbers DVD Top 30 chart with a DVD unit sales estimate. We then can apply the Blu-ray unit sales percentage there on than DVD sales estimate to get a estimate for Blu-ray units sold as well.

I used to do a calculation spreadsheet on best available data for each week for all titles we have data for and will probably start that up again for each week.

Keep checking in and see what I can come up with then.

If you have any specific titles you are interested in besides what you have already mentioned feel free to give me those as well.

The Ten Commandments was 5th best selling Blu-ray title for its release week and 18th best DVD and Blu-ray combined best seller. It also made the Blu-ray top 20 list in its second week of sales which was probably in this case around the same amount of units based on its index number compared to the leading title from that week as well..

Best guess is it sold somewhere between 32,213 and 43,848 units in its release week around Easter of last year.

It probably sold close to that its second week.

Best information I have is The-Numbers reported Ben Hur sold 31,146 units in its release week in September last year.


The other titles did not sell enough units on their release week to get tracked, but they still could have done up to 20,000 units or more and missed hitting the charts.

Also its pretty typical for most title to double their release week sales in the first 8 weeks of release and increase sales long after that.

Apparently catalog is not the big seller it was with DVD so I would expect total numbers to be lower than 20000 on the other three but I also expect these to see some steady sales over the years as they were released almost under the radar waiting to be discovered so to say.

Blu-ray catalog titles sell less on release than DVD because the user base is smaller. But Blu-ray catalog titles tend to sell more consistently as time goes on as the number of new users is expanding all the time all the Blu-ray titles in release are effectively new releases for a new Blu-ray owner.

Most catalog titles shipped to major retailers by the major studios are at least in 10,000 to 50,000 unit allocations if not more based on anticipated demand. But just to send to national distribution to go to 3000 to 4000 brick and mortar storefronts for initial inventory at each retailer like a Best Buy Target or Walmart you need tens of thousands of units.

Among the several new releases June 12, quite a few retailers enhanced copies sold in their stores with a slew of exclusive bonus content.

Target offered exclusive bonus discs with the DVD of Lionsgate’s latest Tyler Perry flick, Good Deeds, which included a "Creating Good Chemistry" featurette, and HBO’s DVD and Blu-ray sets of the final season of “Entourage,” which came with a 65-minute Q&A.

Over at Best Buy, Ghost Rider fans could get Sony Pictures’ new Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance 3D Blu-ray with 20 minutes of additional footage and an exclusive bonus disc with a “Vehicles of Vengeance” featurette.

For Warner’s Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, Best Buy offered the Blu-ray combo pack in steelbook packaging, as well as a Blu-ray of the first film in steelbook packaging separately for $9.99.

Best Buy also offered an exclusive figurine with the purchase of Warner’s Superman vs. the Elite direct-to-video animated movie on Blu-ray. Walmart offered a two-DVD special edition of Superman vs. the Elite, a configuration not offered elsewhere until July 24.

The glut of new June releases continued with a June 12 slate that included Warner’s Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, which should have no trouble topping the sales charts after a $186.8 million haul at the domestic box office.

Contenders for runner-up status include Sony Pictures’ Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance ($51.8 million) and Lionsgate’s latest Tyler Perry movie, Good Deeds ($35 million).

With Warner titles delayed at kiosks, Good Deeds and Ghost Rider should top the rental chart.
