User Avatar has white letterbox bars or sidebars

My User Avatar (57x64) worked fine on the old forum but the new forum adds white bars to the sides, and on lots of other people's Avatars they now have white sidebars or white letterbox bars.

Is there a particular size our Avatar needs to be before uploading it to avoid the white bars being added? The old Forum told us the maximum width & height when changing Avatar, but this new Forum has no guidance. I couldn't find info on this in the FAQ or by searching the support areas. Does it have to be perfectly square? Is there a trick to it? Thanks !

Yep, square now. Your profile page displays it @ 175X175 and posts downsize it to 80X80.

Just reading this thread solved the same problem for me with my own Avatar. wink.gif

I didn't notice that mine was not square either and had white letter bars in it until I read this thread and looked at it myself.redface.gif

Thanks for bringing this up!

Thank you Steve, but Mike's clues helped me figure out how to re-do my Avatar with my old Paint Shop Pro thingy. I made it exactly 175x175 and that did the trick smile.gif

And thank you to Mike too wink.gif

To remove any white space in the avatar box, you can use image re-sizing software (like www.picresize.com) to 'square up' avatar images to 80x80 pixels.

However if you're still using your old low-res 55X65 avatar from the previous platform and then cut even more off to then blow it up to 80X80, it will look worse...especially when viewed on your profile page at 175X175.

That's pretty much what was happening when i tried resizing my existing Avatar - it kept looking pretty poor so i gave up on that and just re-created a new Avatar picture from the original and downsized it to exactly 175x175 and it looks good now.

It does look pretty good.

If I may ask, what's the coast line in the background?

Sorry - forgot to respond earlier. Pic was taken at the La Jolla Cove, California. We went for a walk on the rocks after having breakfast at The Brockton Villa restaurant overlooking the cove - the coastline in the backround is the northern part of the cove.

Here's the view from the restaurant looking more west:
