I would not buy it. The video out issue has been going on for 5 months. They obviously can't fix it. The .3% is a bunch of BS. I returned mine and the 2nd unit has the same problem. I'm not that lucky that I would get two units in that .3%.

what do you all consider a good replacement then? the DENON 1613 doesnt have 6 HDMI ports. Seems like there really is no comparable options to the NR515's price points.

Just installed three NR414's on a project... haven't experienced any problems so far.

I have an Interlix 4x4 matrix switching my HDMI sources and the Onkyo unit is controlled via IP with Control4, all working and sounds great!!

I'll share: I'm going through Analysis paralysis. I'm not a newb, but certainly a novice with only 1 AVR purchase under my belt (Onkyo 607). I initially wanted to buy the 616 or 515, but now really question it given the complaints.

I need:
- Good Multizone 2 support (e.g. Party mode as my basement bar adjoins the main listening area)
- good # old school Composite inputs (rules out some Denons)
- Nice to Have: Future proof, as I keep these things a while (I guess 4k upscaling, lots of inputs)
- Don't really care about Airplay as I'm on Sonos and probably would do an AppleTV as well

Planned Use:
-Humble Basement Audio system in a large main room with open concept room around. Lots of Acoustical issues like a solid rock wall on one side.
-Pioneer FS51 series towers and center, monoprice ceiling back surrounds and zone 2 (yes - humble). A BIC F12, I guess, when I get there.

My Thoughts: (Onkyo 616 (~$400 vs Yamaha HTR-7065 $480@Costco vs. refurb Denon 2312CI ~$430)

Onkyo 616: I could just buy from Amazon and return it if it fails. That is IF I even uncover all the issues given this won't be my daily use setup.
-Concerned on not being able to upscale varied inputs
-Not sure it has equal Zone 2 capability to Yamaha 7065

Yamaha:
-Good return policy at Costco
-lacks Pandora which sucks
-is this more of a mid-pro vs. a entry model (htr?)?

Denon:
-Not really sure I want to buy refurb
-Pro: has Audyssy for Sub woofer

I'd GREATLY value any input here. Considering the Yamaha now, but realize that going up to 480 price point might suggest I look at others.

The 2 I installed worked great for a short while too. Keep us updated in a week, I'll be curious to hear if they video out is still working.

This is my very first post on any audio forum. I bought the 616 last Saturday.

I tried to update firmware via wireless...didn't work.
I updated with USB...worked but still prompted for an additional update.
Completed update via eithernet connection...seemed to work.

I had the sound but no video issue happen once.

I travel and my wife will not be able to address any of the issues if she wants to watch TV while I am out of town. I can return this unit and most likely will do so this coming weekend. I like the Pandora streaming, access to my music files, controling the unit from anywhere and 5 or more HDMI imputs. I need to know what other receivers I should consider to replace the 616. It needs to be reletively simple to set-up and operated if needed t I can spend a little more money for trouble free operation. I am not a enthusiast just someone who enjoys good quality sound.

You could consider the Onkyo 818 which seems to not be affected by the problems that the 616 and lower end receivers are having. The 818 also includes the state-of-the-art Audyssey XT32 while anything lower in the line only has 2EQ (relatively useless IMO).

basically it is a hand shake problem. turn the receiver on first, wait a few seconds, turn on the TV.

And I thought that getting the 616 was a high end model. Ah, I'm so naive. I guess I needed to shell out a couple hundred more for the 717+

High end doesn't really start until you get to the $1500+ range .... the 616 would be considered lower mid level at best. This is one of those instances where Denon and Marantz actually have this feature of converting/upscaling component to HDMI 1080p at lower price points than Onkyo: Denon 1913 ($579) and Marantz 1603 ($649).

I have the Onkyo 616 and have the problem as below -

When connecting a PC via HDMI It knocks out the TV ARC which results in no sound from the TV, to resolve this i have to factory reset my amp and not connect the PC.
Bottom line i'll NEVER buy a Onkyo device again!! a pile of crap!

What HDMI input are you using and what source name are you assigning it to?

Onkyo Support just posted an update on their forum stating that they hope to have a firmware update for the video output fix later next week. I really hope this is the case!

In the same post he stated that the problem rate is still under .3%, which I still find extremely hard to believe.

Unfortunately, they posted the exact same message about 3 weeks ago indicating an update would be out the folllowing week. Nothing happened.

Well, do the high end models have as many issues as the lower end models? Alot of the problems mentioned in this thread are inexcusable. These are basic functions of the device that are just not working like they are suppose to. I cant imagine these problems occurring with the high end models.

Has anyone had any issues with the ethernet port? I have a new 414 that works fine, except that I can't get a lan connection. I've tried switching cables to my router that I know work, and I get a solid click on both end. The router port doesn't light up, and the receiver tells me that the network cable is not plugged in.

I have TX-NR616, setup was OK.
In NET and USB mode I have no picture om my display, just blue. I can operate it through tx-nr616's display but I don't like it that way. I can operate it through android app too. All other contacts work fine (I use just HDMI).
Anybody with same problem? Any idea how to solve this?

Have they fixed the video issue? I have been looking at buying a receiver. torn between onkyo and denon. i would like to get the onkyo but that video issue is killing it and making me on a hold pattern to see how it shakes out. I want to get a receiver soon though.

I'm on the second day of ownership of a 414. When I first powered it up, everything seemed to be working fine. Clearly, the ethernet connect was working fine because I was using the iPhone app. All of a sudden the app froze. I attributed the freeze to a problem with the app, but on further investigation I found the same symptoms you are reporting with the ethernet connection. I changed the cable and still had no connection. I power cycled the 414 and my ethernet connection returned. At some point I was asked if I wanted to do a firmware update. I did the update and in the limited use the receiver has had since then there has not been a problem. If the problem returns, I will have to return the unit to Amazon. cwalker3: are you still having the problem? Anybody else?

This is absolutely my first post in this forum! *newbie smile*

I have recently (just got it yesterday) a brand new Onkyo TX-NR515. Spent countless of hours going through reviews and sites and managed to convince myself this is the right choice for me.

So far, I only have one problem which I cannot seem to solve. I have my PS3 slim plugged into the receiver (HDMI port 1: BD/DVD). Picture is perfect; sound is not. The issue is that I do not get 7.1 sound in games. I get all the works while playing a blu-ray movie, but in games, only my 2 front speakers work. I tried fiddling around with the settings but nothing seems to work.

I'd appreciate any help.

I have been struggling with the 616 for the past few weeks and I have nearly given up.

The key issues are:
- sound ouput remains at PCM Stereo. Compared with my previous Yamaha, Denon and Marantz receivers, the Onkyo does not have a surround button to toggle between the various sources.
- while playing a Blu-Ray movie for a short while, the amp turns off.
- i had initially wanted to connect to another av amp to send the AV signals to a projector and a secondary 5.1 system via HDMI sub out, but now have still been unable to get the sound from the main speakers.

Anyone have similar problems?

Have had my 515 for three weeks, and I had the first HDMI output issue two days ago. Nothing was being output via the HDMI, but sound was coming from the speakers.

I did the "clear" procedure, and reset all of my settings and all is back to normal. I have the August 9 firmware update.

I hope I dont have to do this every three weeks.

I believe that this is similar to my situation. I have the PS3 plugged into Game and Sony Blu-Ray into BD. Tried both and the amp is stuck in PCM mode and outputs to only 2 speakers, so when i watch even DVDs I do not even get to hear the dialogs . This is so frustrating! Grrr.

Hi, newbie here (this thread seems to be bringing in newbies left and right!).

Just brought home a 515 and updated it with the latest firmware via USB.

The MAIN thing I'm trying to accomplish and having no luck with is sending the signal from an NES through HDMI to my TV.

I've got the NES plugged in with composite cables to GAME. I have cleared out the HDMI input and Component input for GAME.

One time I got sound, but in fiddling with it, the sound went away and I was unable to get it back. Never got any video (through HDMI Out to my TV) Any hints or tips? I'd rather not send the stupid thing (the receiver, not my beloved NES) back if I don't have to...

EDIT: Upon messing with it further, I did successfully have it upconvert my Wii from 480i composite to my HDMI output. It wasn't even hard! Also no lag that I could tell. Also, been chatting with an Onkyo person at the official forums. It seems the problem is that the NES puts out 240p and not 480i. So now I'm looking for some sort of converter, because as we've all learned in this thread, the 515 will only upconvert 480i. Sigh. Still, other than that, the receiver seems alright so far.

I have a 515 and have had problems since I installed. I have been through 3 factory resets, which seems to solve the problem for a time and then it comes back. Mine seems to be related to the cable box HDMI connection. I have replace HDM cables, hooked up to diff HDMI ports on the receiver, had the cable company replace the cable box and still get problems. Currently, I have cable video, but no audeo. I have had audeo and no video, an I have had times without either. I have never had a problem with the DVD player that is alos connected to the Onkyo via HDMI. This is terrible. My receiver just did a firmware upgrade a couple of days ago and yesterday this started happening. I guess I am back to factory reset and start over.

There is a firmware update available (usb only). I will get the 515 & 616 updated yet this week. I am praying that this fixes this issue.
