HDMI cables would not need to be replaced because of specification changes. There are no HDMI 1.1 or 1.4 cables. A high speed HDMI cable is just that. A manufacturer that says their HDMI cable supports 3D is advertising correctly. A manufacturer that advertises an HDMI 1.4 cable is being misleading because there is no such thing. While the hardware specs have changed and an HDMI 1.1 receiver does not have the same feature support of an HDMI 1.4 receiver, the cable specifications have not changed.

Now after 24 hours my HDMI pass thru stopped working even after several positive tests the day before. Damn this thing!

Ive done some reading how the handshake for HDMI gets suspended when I a certain amount of time goes by when I do anything with my HTPC. There is something that needs to be done to reinitiate the HDMI Handshake from my HTPC to the receiver to reconnect it??

If anyone has any information about this issue would be greatly appreciated.

I just got the 616 to replace a 606 for the 3d video and have noticed issues with audio dropping out for a second while watching different sources. I don't believe it is the source as I have rewound and the drop out did not occur again. I did the usb firmware update the day I hooked it up so it should be current. I have version 1141-0108-0400. Is anyone else experiencing this issue?

So I just got my new nr414 hooked up and I cannot for the life of me get HDMI out to display ANYTHING. No menu, no video to my Acer h5360 projector.


I plugged my appletv into Blu-ray hdmi1, then the output to my projector. The result is my projector not finding the source. When i plug the projector directly to the appletv it works flawlessly so it has to be a receiver issue.

I have tried all manor of settings that looked like it might work. HDMI passthrough, changed the sources back and forth, and tried different port. All result in a no input but the sound works just fine.

So I had an HDMI->HDMI out setup and I get sound but no video output. Is there something I am missing here? Is my unit defective?

Damn shame.. these units have a great feature set (tons of inputs, 2 HDMI outputs, powered Zone 2 with my 5.1 setup) but their inability to maintain an HDMI handshake with my PS3 is a dealbreaker for me. I refuse to live with a receiver where the video out constantly conks out. Bought a Denon and I'm sending back the Onkyo.

I'm getting a 616 for my birthday. I made sure I got it at a place that backs all of the stuff that they sell. If I have these same issues I'll probably get a Denon instead. I don't need 8 HDMI in but I do want 2 out. I'm hoping I'll be able to find a comparable unit.

I took my 616 back months ago to the retail store within the 30-day time limit. I bought a Denon, forgot the model, instead. Sure it cost $150 more but that doesn't matter now. I keep up on this thread because I am subscribed. I am amazed at those of you who keep working on resolving the 616 issues. You have alot more patience and fortitude that I have. Good for you!

I cant figure out what is going on with my 616. I have a Comcast HD box going HDMI into the receiver and out to the TV.

Everyday after work when i turn on the television the is a light blue screen and no audio. The only way i can get picture back is by actually unplugging the cable box and having it reboot.

i cant just unplug the HDMI cable or reset the receiver. I have installed the latest firmware with USB 1141-0108-0400

Would anyone know if this is an issue on the receiver end or the Cable box.

**note i had the same cable box for four years with an Onkyo 605 and have never had this problem.

Does anyone know what should be displayed when watching a Blue-Ray movie as far as Audio. I can't for the life of me figure out if I have the audio setup correcly. I'm watching Iron-man blu-ray and it always sayd like PCM, Multichannel, Dolby EX. I don't think it should be setup like that. My SONY player says its outputing Dolby True HD yet the recieve doesn't. I believe I have it setup correctly. I have it set so BD/DVD uses HDMI for audio. the LIstening modes to me are a PITA.

Sorry for the delayed response. AT&T did come out and replace my box with a newer version (2250 I believe) and this has solved 99.9% of my audio drop out issues. Maybe once every few hours I'll hear a very quick drop out, but that's it; I can live with that. I have had a few issues with the hdmi output of the receiver though. Like some others, occasionally I will get sound but no picture when I turn on the receiver and I have to turn it off, turn my AT&T box off and then turn them both back on and it works. If this continues, it may be a deal breaker and the Onkyo may get returned. It's a shame that these receivers have had so many problems; great features at a great price point, but that means nothing if it doesn't actually function as designed.

I bought the 616 in May and was very happy until a couple of weeks ago, when I noticed that every once in a while the video feed would flicker. Just once, but easily noticeable. I had heard of the HDMI problems, so I was a little worried, but did not do anything. Monday of this week, the HDMI out went out altogether. I found this thread, tried the unplug/wait/retry approach, and that worked for Monday night.

Tuesday night, though, the reset only lasted for a few minutes. A little more research, and I see the new firmware is only available on USB (I thought I was current because the unit did not give me the option to update via the wired connection). I was on version 1130-9106-0300. So Thursday I formatted a USB and gave that a go, with version 1141-0108-0400. Success. HDMI output all night Thursday. Friday afternoon, though, HDMI output fails after about five minutes. Unplug/wait/retry is good for a whopping two seconds.

I did not read all nine pages of this thread, but I read quite a lot and I have not seen anyone who has had this problem who ever came back and reported that it had been fixed for good. For those of you who your unit replaced, did the new unit last? This is a great unit - when it works. And six months of it working earns pretty poor marks. I got the warranty (3 year), but I am not sure I have the patience to endure getting a new unit every few months.

Anyone out there want to talk me off the ledge, or are all of you bailing out and opting for a Denon?

I just setup my TX-NR515 a few hours ago and updated the firmware. I am using a projector over HDMI as my display. I only see an image on the screen if I have a source connected to the receiver and turned on. I can't use USB or Network playback because the picture disappears. If I connect a TV everything works normally. Anyone know what is going on?? I've connected the projector to the main HDMI out.

Ruben Z- I also have the same problem your having. What I got for an answer was that my ps3 was already processing the hd sound and the receiver was just playing the signal being sent to it. That could be what happening in your situation.


Casadehughes- I'm having the exact same problem as you and it's driving me crazy. I've had my onkyo reciever for 2 years now and it started about 1 year ago. Unfortunately I'm a newb and bought a low end unit so the firmware isn't even able to be updated, so I think I'm SOL.

I really wanted to grab a 616 but after reading all this I think I'll be getting a denon 1913... Unless I some how fix my problem mad.gif

Hi Ruben Z, check your Sony player audio menu ... BD Audio Mix should be set to either "DIRECT" or "OFF" and HDMI Audio should be "AUTO".

Here are the instructions I followed when I sent an inquiry to Customer Relations/Service:
You can do the USB firmware update that’s on the website. Depending on the Firmware that's one the receiver, you may have to do the firmware more than once. When downloading the firmware update from the website, it will come as a zip file. Within it you will see 4 files (1 folder and 3 files) you must extract those 4 items on to the root of the flash drive. Once you've done that place the flash drive in to you receiver, grab your remote and press the receiver mode button followed by the Home button. Toggle to the right to F/W UPDATE and press enter. There you will see the firmware that is already on the unit beneath that you will see UPDATE VIA USB. Select that option and the receiver will update. Once done it will say "COMPLETED!" on the screen. Please go back to the F/W update screen to see if the firmware where is now up to date. It will begin with 1141 and end in 0400. If you don’t see that than your unit is not fully up to date and would have to do the update process again.
This was essentially the first thing I did when my 616 arrived last week. Granted, it has only been about a week, but it has worked great. I have to say that, so far, I have found my Onkyo to be a great value.
just bought a 616 2weeks ago then found this forum good info well i have downloaded the files on my flash drive and just wanted to know if i can install the firmware via usb with nothing connected to the reciever can i just use the front display or should the tv/ projector be hooked up first?any other hook ups ? before the install any info would be great thanks

Yes, I updated my 616 tonight, from the 0300 to 0400 version, using USB, after losing my HDMI video out. Oddly enough, it had been working for quite some time, but for some reason it stopped today. Tried a couple power cycles, and then also hooked up to the 2nd monitor output, which did work. But there is no on-screen display on 2nd monitor. At least not while I could use it.

So I updated the firmware, and used the remote and the front panel to do it. One thing I noticed, I had the zipped file on the thumb drive along with the unzipped files, and I think they were in a dedicated directory on the drive. The receiver didn't seem to recognize them; it must be that they need to be in the root directory, since at first the receiver didn't give me the option to update from USB.

Once I put those unzipped files in the top/root directory, it recognized the USB update as an option from the setup menu.

It's really odd that the unit suddenly stopped with the HDMI out today. I had been watching on the remote TV earlier in the day.

At this point, if I had to do it over again, I'd probably go with Denon, given all the issues with this receiver. I do like it, nice sound, and I like the two-output HDMI capability, but who knows how long this thing will work?

So far I haven't had any problems. I've used my bd player, roku,pc etc on hdmi and no issues. I still have 0200 firmware. Gonna update tonight

i thought i had the same problem but maybe what i did can help you as well... check the setup items and there should be an option where you can display video on the main (1), sub (2), or BOTH. when i got my 616, it would not display anything for on my projector that was connected to the hdmi sub (2), then when i switched it to 'BOTH' it worked.

You might want to try the Onkyo support forum where many people have problems with the 616

Onkyo TX-NR616 Very Low Volume



I just bought Onkyo TX-NR616 and I connected it with a 5.1 system (Wharfedale DX-1 HCP). I updated to latest firmware (400), I did the initial setup including Audyssey but the audio output is very low. I checked all the connections, polarity is fine.
When waching TV or hearing music via USB or radio, at level 55/60 I hear at normal level. With the Avatar BR I had to put the audio at level 75 to hear it normal.
The room is about 18 m2

Is this also happening to any of you?
What audio level do you hear music or play movies?

It turns out it was the HDMI cable, it seems the h5260 has issues with cheaper HDMI cables. It blew my mind when I hooked up the more expensive cable (high speed) and the image worked fine after that. Now I have no issues whatsoever with my onkyo and my sound is mindblowing. There are also some options in the advanced setup that could cause this to happen as well, but a simple factory reset should put in the proper settings to get you up and running.

I've had most of the problems mentioned on this thread, but now that I've managed to update the firmware it all seems to be working fine..

except..

lip sync.

Does anyone else have a problem with lip sync? if I adjust it for streaming a film through my BT Vision box it will be then out for watching normal TV.. but not always.. its almost as if the sync wanders, sometimes it appears to be fine, then later in the film its 80ms out..

I'm using a brand new LG tv, connected to the Onkyo via HDMI arc. I notice the Onkyo has an auto setting for lip sync, should that be on or off?

Any other way of fixing this??
