Get a refurbished unit, I did and it works great. I did not do any updates and won't, if it works don't fix it, they come with a 1 year and any time during that year Onkyo has a extend warranty for very little money
Got a 515 from accessories4less.com with free shipping

I don't like to buy anything refurbished. I might go with the denon 1613 instead.
accessories4less.com have the Denon 1613 for less yet, not buying refurbished was the way I use to be then a friend pointed out that very little of the production run are texted, and every refurb is checked over by a tech and whats not right is put right and the end user benefits with a proofed unit and a great price. I have not had a refurbished unit fail and look like anything other then new.

I bought a refurbed Denon 1612 few weeks ago after 10 years with the same panasonic reciever. Never bought something refurbished before but I figured that they check each one completly before selling it. Wel they must have missed one and I was the lucky recipient. As soon as i turned it on it turned itself off and would stay in an endless on/off loop until I pull out the plug. How could they miss this... i'm never buying refurbished electronics again

Not entirely true as the % of defective refurbs is likely similar to % of defective new units.

So then by the same reasoning, if you end up with a defective "new" unit you'll never by any "new" one again either?

I just bought the denon 1713. New.

I don't know what you might have paid for the 1713, but if there is a Frys near you, this week they have the 1913 for $329, in-store only. It's one of those "major brand name" ads in the paper, that requires you to visit the store or call them to find out what it is.

I was choosing between the 1913 and the Onkyo 515. I like the "feature-packed" nature of the 515, but this thread in particular gives me great pause.

No frys in MA.

The 1913 has a more limited version of Audyssey than the 1713. People looking at the 1913 often find the 2113 more attractive.
I paid $399.
Where did you get the 2113 for$399?

I didn't get a 2113.

I got the 1713.

Like everything ells when it comes to refurbished it's all down to who does it. I stick to factory rehab or in say Vizios case an vendor that is contracted to them. Ebay is a place to get used defective and damaged that a few Ebay sellers are just turing around, buyer beware. This is a Onkyo 414/515/616 problem thread and I would expect that most post have a problem with a unit from Onkyo, what action is being taken to fix. Is Onkyo service working out or not? If I were still in the market for a new unit that is what I would like to know. As for Frys I bought a LCD from them 7 years ago and it went bad about 90 days later and because I had not gotten Frys warranty I had to try to deal with the factory service and spent about 6 months getting the run-a-round before they replaced the unit with one of there referb's.

I got a TX-NR414 last week and had no problems with it, I upgraded the firmware through wired ethernet straight out of the box and everything was fine. I have a serious issue with this unit's USB playback though, there is a huge gap between every song and the display reads "Connecting..." while this is going on. It's the worst USB playback I have ever seen and I am considering returning/selling the receiver right away because it's so bad as I digitized my entire music collection on a USB drive and got this receiver specifically to play it.

You should have updated the fw the correct way.

I ended up having to return my HT-RC460 (nearly identical, including firmware, to NR515) because Onkyo couldn't figure out my HDMI passthrough issues. The minute I posted that I had been forced to return it and replaced it with another brand, the mods on their support "forum" deleted not only the post, but the entire 4 page long thread on the issues, troubleshooting, possible solutions, and eventual resolution. I dared to mention it and ask why, and they IP banned me from the forum and went on to remove my post on their Facebook page from a month ago.

Needless to say, Onkyo has lost a consumer for life. Oh, and I replaced that buggy thing with a Denon 1913, which has worked flawlessly with the same components and even the same cables that I had hooked up to the Onkyo.

Im also having HDMI passThrough issues despite updating my 515 to the latest (400 version) software. In fact, if I now turn off the 515 (to which is connected a SA cable box and an LG TV-both by HDMI), within a few seconds I get the Cablebox picture and sound on the TV, but then its lost. The Hybrid Bypass LED glows for a few minutes, then turns off. Ive emailed OnKYO with this issue, and Im awaiting a response. Open to any ideas Please!

Onkyo TX nr515

Thanks!

My 616 is not working with a benq w1070. I have the latest firmware (400) but all I can get is the Onkyo splash screen, it worked fine with my Samsung tv. The projector works fine with sources connected directly with the same cords. Strangely a low end Onkyo AVX-290 works fine. I have not contacted Onkyo but seeing how they shut down the old forum and now heavily moderate the new one I do not have much hope. I am past 90 days so Discover won't help me return it, what can I expect if anything from Onkyo to get this fixed?

I have the same issue where the audio return channel (ARC) goes out if I connect my PC via HDMI. I haven't updated firmware yet because everything else seems to be working fine and I don't want to press my luck. Anybody have the same problem and find a way to fix it?
Return it immediately, either for another unit of the same model, or something else. I had that same problem and even talked to one of the testing engineers, and they couldn't figure anything out. Their only response to me was that I should return the unit, either to them or to the retailer.
Just received the NR414 and hooked everything up, including my HTPC (via HDMI). It all worked fine until I updated the firmware. Now there is a purple hue when I switch over to the PC inpute. All other inputs are fine. Swapped the cable and changed ports but the problem persisted.

Anybody know of this? Also, is there anyway to rollback a firmware update?
Hi,

New here and a bit of an A/V newbie. Just bought the NR414 from newegg. Can you'all give me some suggestions on how to stress test it to see if I have any of the reported issues?

I will attach something to the usb to see if I get the audio issue he was having above. The only thing I did notice: I origninally had the roku hdmi running into the BD/DVD hdmi input and had it not pickup the video. I move it to another hdmi port and have not had a problem. I will have to move it back to see if the problem persists. I assume that is not normal?? This is the first a/v reciever i have purchased in 17 years and the first with hdmi.

thanks !

I recently bought this AVR a couple days ago. It seems to be working fine with just a few issues. I bought a refurb for $299 with the latest firmware. I am only running three sources to it. My Cox Trio WHDVR,PS3, and a Wii U all through HDMI. The first problem I have is with the network settings. Im using an Access Point for internet. The Receiver sees the feed, and allows for the remote control APP to work. After about 20 minutes of Music streaming from my Galaxy Nexus, the song will pause and a few seconds later the AVR turns off. The other network issue im having is it actually connecting to WAN. When i try to log in to SiriusXM it fails, if i go to pandora, it never loads a signup code. But if i unplug the AP and plug it into my pc it works fine with internet and all. Right now it is set with a static IP and still no internet connection. The Third issue im having and this is a biggie for me, because i don't like using multiple remotes. I can not get my Cox URC 8820 remote to program to the AVR. If you go through the code search it will find the code and turn off the AVR. then the remote stops controlling the AVR and the volume buttons stop working. I ordered a harmony 700 so hopefully that fixes the remote issue.I just hate buying something new and having to replace other things because of compatibility. Any help, I like the receiver so far it is a world of difference from my OLD Sony Str-DE897

I bought a refurb 616 a couple weeks ago. The top sub pre-out quit working the other day, but the bottom one still works. I bought the extended warranty. I'm wondering if I should have it fixed or wait until the bottom one goes out too.
Depends on whether the repair facility is local or if you have to pay to ship it to a facility as well as how long you're prepared to be without the unit as you can replicate the 2nd pre-out if you need it with a $3 RCA "Y" splitter cable.

Hi,
my friend has the tx-nr616 with the zone 2 not working. When I press on Zone2 button on the AVR itself and change the volume, the message "Pwrd Zone 2 NonAct" appears...

When I press Zone2 button twice on the AVR, it automatically switches to the same input source, but there is no sound.

trying to work the zone2 from the remote doesn't yield any success either.

What can possibly be wrong?

thanks much:)

On my 607 you have to activate Zone 2 in the setup. I think it's under speaker settings. I'm sure it's probably the same on the 616.

I was thinking the same thing. I would have to send it off to be repaired.

Thanks! Went thru the setup again, there is only an option to choose whether the zone2 is fed thru an amp or not... I start to suspect that there is smthg wrong with the amp itself... I checked the wiring of the speakers in zone2, switching them onto main zone makes them run all right....

fortunately for my friend, the amp is still on warranty, so I guess he'll have to call these guys over to troubleshoot.

Powered Zone 2 must be selected in the Speaker Setup section. Note that it powered zone 2 is selected, then you give up 2 channels of the "7.1" channels, giving up the rear/left and rear/right channels.

Hello Friends, I'm thinking about to buy the TX-NR515 But with this thread I don't know... Is that bad?? Is there another receiver than have a similar price with similar specification better than 515??? Thank you
post #420 of 660
Go ahead and get one, they sell a lot of them and so like any thing ells there are a few things that get through. I think that one of the problems is the update's that a lot of people have to do them selfs. I got one from accessories4less.com and they sell factory refurbished from just about every manufacture out there. I have what you ask about and it's comes with the year warranty at a great price with free shipping at this time, comes updated from the factory facility that does the refurbish. The owners manual is on line at Onkyo .com., check them out.
