Guys, encountered a problem yesterday with my 515.

I was watching Oblivion off a usb drive connected to my bluray player yesterday when I noticed that no sound was coming from the rear surround speakers. I quickly checked the details of the movie file and it says it has 5.1 channels DTS. Then I pressed the movie mode of the Onkyo but lo and behold! screen says not available??

I was puzzled why this is happening. I also noticed that the Audyssey light on the onkyo's screen is missing. I tested with other movie file, and even a bluray disk of DKR but still no sound from surrounds.

Then I turned on my apple TV and played music via AirPlay and I instantly heard the sound from the rears. This worried me even further.

I tried going into the Onkyo's setup but somehow the second option (speaker configuration) is grayed out and inaccesible. So I resorted to going online to find the answer but to no avail. I even unplugged and plugged back the two banana plugs of my rears connected to the Onkyo but still nothing changed.

I ended up resetting my AVR then going again through the painful process of setting it up ala just-opened-from-the-box. I ran the full Audyssey setup and have to withstand the loud spikes it produced while calibrating the speakers/room with the provided mic. (I hope my neighbor didn't complain as it was already 11:30PM)

I'm not running the latest FW (just the second to latest) as I don't see a reason to upgrade because the problems stated online needing FW upgrade isn't and haven't happend to mine so.

Thanks! I was sure I had seen people doing it that way. Are you at the latest firmware level?

I wonder why Onkyo is telling us that it is not supported.

I don't know that. When I got my 616 back in May 2013, I updated to the latest firmware which I believe is still the final and latest version before even touching anything on it. At the time it was only one update behind but I don't recall the numbers now. I can tell you I did make the mistake in my excitement of setting it up of forgetting to set the usb to the rear usb for the dongle and learning that the hard way.

Hi everyone

I've had my txnr414 for about a week now and been able to use all the functions perfectly. However, after setting up Internet radio and enabling the standby mode that allows you to turn it on from the onkyo app last night, this morning, it won't read the USB (iPod) and there's no Internet radio.

The menu screen just has the words abs, digital and usb (flashing) in small print.

Erm... Help?

any advice would be great!

Hi all, I have purchased a 515 from amazon and I live in Australia and required to buy a step down transformer for it to work. My problem is that it won't power on, when we first got it we had tried to power it on with out the step down transformer , I have checked the fuse and it is fine and there is no sign of any burnt electrical components . I'm hoping someone could assist me.

I've since restored it to factory settings and all is good again. However, I'd like to know what might have caused it?

Is it possible I need a further update? I've only just updated it last week though?
Also... instaprevue hasn't worked yet. Does anyone know what I need to do?

thanks!

The magic of the soft and hard reset is not well understood. I'm betting you already made sure you have the latest update. I haven't played around with Instaprevue yet. Take a look at the manual and let us know.

I think I'm having the same issue. My rears seem to not work and then for no reason they do work. Initially I thought it was a hardware failure but then it seems that if I went into the Dolby section in the session and turned the EX from manual to auto it seemed to work. After though I figured it was something with the firmware but now think it might be a hardware issue since it happened again and I can get it to work....

anyone know how to access older versions of the firmware updates, ie the one ending in 200 or 300. I want to try to downgrade the fw and see if it fixes my rear surround back issue.
I am also trying to find the October firmware for the 616.

However I am not sure how you could force the unit to apply the firmware as I suspect it will just say newer firmware installed

Anybody managed to downgrade a firmware successfully?
good point...never thought of that issue. I assumed that it would but maybe your right.
Who knows, at this point I just want to get this thing fixed and hope it works going forward. Always been a yamaha guy but decided to take a flyer on the 616 since you couldn't beat the price but I guess the old saying is true.. you get what you pay for.

Totally agree...the 616 was the best $329 I've spent in years.

I just got my 515 yesterday and today I had to reset the receiver for the sound to work. No sound was coming from any of the hdmi sources. After a reset it worked but had to run audessey again. Is this a common issue? Should I just return the receiver? Would they charge me for the return shipping for something that was already damaged? I've had it for less than 24 hours as of now.

Thanks

I had that issue when using CEC with the TV. A soft reset of both the TV and the AVR are required as in by design. That's my only comparison I can refer to. I've never had to do a hard reset and redo the Audyssey.

Thanks

I bought the 616 used on Amazon for a good price, but the remote doesn't work. Is there any way to get to the "Home" screen to do the USB firmware update without using the remote? I couldn't find it in the setup screens on the face of the receiver.

Thanks

A soft reset sounds hokey but it is simply unplugging from the wall for a bit. Sounds like something your IT guy would tell you when he has no clue what is wrong...but in this case it works.

Sure, just download the app for your android or apple device. With it you can access the exact screen you need for a firmware update. I haven't touched the present remote more than maybe 2 times since buying my 616 in May 2013. The phone app does everything you need and even allows you to control your TV presuming it is wifi enabled. Of course you can access the screen from the AVR itself as well.

My TX-NR414 won't make any sound as far as I can tell; even with a source connected to AUX and headphones connected to the front phones jack, I hear no sound.

I've updated the firmware, and done the soft reset, but still no sound. It doesn't display MUTING and the remotes and iPhone remotes seem to work, but it will not make any noise.

I've nothing connected to it but the audio source (which is working fine directly) and the two speakers.

Any ideas or should I send it back to Amazon?

It was working fine for awhile.

I did what you just said, unplug and plug it back in and it worked. I'm wondering why the hell customer support didn't tell me to do this in the first place instead of making me reset everything.

This problem keeps happening. I've had the receiver for a few days now and whenever I turn the receiver off for more than half hour, I have to do a soft reset to get the sound back. It is getting hella annoying now. Onkyo is sending me a replacement....should I even bother with it? Any idea what is causing this problem. FW is the latest one.

Before the 515 I had the 509 for a year which worked flawlessly. Now I'm thinking why the hell did I sell it!!

I saw your note, downloaded and applied the update via USB as directed on my TX-NR515. It took about 45 minutes to install. Nothing broken after the update as far as I can tell. The enhancements / fixes are minimal. I hope it takes care of my occasional no sound problem from the PC input source.

I don't know what else to say. Other than a better Audyssey, to me this is just a no brainer and I'll gladly give up Multieq for the features the 616 has. Do a side by side with any other much more expensive receiver and I'd buy this over and over. I still can't comprehend how good of a deal these things are. When I bought mine in May it was one firmware updated behind and so before I did anything at all or plugged any cables into it I installed the firmware via a usb. All I can surmise is that the issues on my particular unit have been solved. In the back of my mind however, I realized that of the three total authorized warranty repair shops in a 5 state radius, one of them is literally on my way to work. I almost feel bad for people who got a bad one or have passed it by due to bad reviews. Also keep in mind that Onkyo has a 40% market share of the AVR market while the others have tiny fractions of the market. You are simply going to hear a lot more noise when the dominant player has some issues. I am having a hard time finding one thing that I'm dissatisfied with with this AVR. It is simply worth more than the street price indicates. Of course the 626 is out now and that added a few minute things plus added better audyssey, but also took a bunch of things off that the 616 had. All that said, I'd be pissed If I had gotten a bad one or bought earlier before the issue were ironed out.

I've been using my NR-616 for about 9 months. I updated to the latest software in December of 2012 and I've never had any problems at all. I have Zone 2 running to another part of my house, I use the Onkyo remote apps on an iPad and an Android phone. Everything works as it should.

This receiver has a lot of features and it's somewhat complicated to set up and use. I'm sure that with the number of features, there must be some configurations that will have problems. I'm not seeing any and I would guess that most people will not have any issues with this receiver updated to the latest firmware.

Wait...there's a new firmware update? I don't think I'll be installing it. I'm afraid it will ruin the run of luck I've had with this 616.

dang im so mad!

i got the 616 and when i turn the system off and back on i get no sound from my HTPC hdmi source from the evga gtx 660ti. I can run the hdmi from the pc to the tv then optical from the tv to the reciever and the sound is amazing. but when i watch a DTS movie i get no sound.

if i run optical out from the back of my asus motherboard. i get all digital sound from XBMC but no youtube sound. or analog. hence why i tried to passthrough the optical from the pc to the tv out to the reciever.

when you unplug the hdmi from the back and plug it back in you get sound from the pc but you have have to do that each time the reciever turns off.

you might be able to fix this with a hdmi switch and a harmony remote to do the unplugging for you but whats the point.

i wish my tv had a hdmi out to fix this BRAND NEW CRIPPLED RECIEVER. of course analog out works ALL THE TIME. headphone plug for the win!

newegg will take it back im sure. still within 30 days!
. Lolo uña 19pin on hdmi cable on pc side

I received my NR616 the other day, all seems fine. First thing i did before connecting anything was to update firmware to latest via USB.

Took about an hour but all went fine.

Struggling to figure if my unit isnt working right regarding the hybrid standby mode. If i turn on my AMP along with plasma and skyhd system it happy works fine as expected. Turn the amp off and continue to watch sky fine for hours.

But if i turn off the plasma/sky after a while the hybrid light goes off and i have to power up the amp fully to get a picture again......i thought the amp could pass though the last source fine without having to power up the amp?

I'm about one year in and the HDMI out on my 616 has failed. I updated the Firmware and did a hard reset and nothing has worked. The strange thing is that on startup, "Onkyo" does get displayed on my TV but it then goes blank. Anyhow, I have it in for repair under warranty, so we'll see how that goes. Has anyone had good luck with units being repaired not having the same issue re-ocurr?
I just got my 616 back from the service depot as my surround backs failed after about 10 months. The interesting thing is when I got it back the service document indicated the repair to the surround backs but in addition, they identified numerous bad solder points and re soldered at least three separate pieces. My guess is that the soldering on this thing is half assed and with continuous use and heating, the solder joints wear and then things fail. We'll see if my HDMI ends up going but so far only had the issue with the surround backs.

Good luck to everyone

Just curious to know if anybody has installed the latest firmware update. Did it fix anything? Did it break anything? My NR-616 is working ok right now and I'm waiting to make sure that the firmware update doesn't have any problems before I install it.
