I updated the firmware to the 6/26 version, using the network option, and until tonight, had not an issue with the HDMI failing.
Since AMC and Dishnetwork can't get along, I recently ordered Verizon Fios TV. Last night, I set up the STB/DVR as another input on the 616, using for the first time the CBL/SAT input. It all seemed to work at the time...
Tonight, I get home from work, go to turn on the system to watch the news (on Dish) and NO F'ING HDMI. "Signal not found" or something like that, is on the TV.
Switching all the sources around, I can't get anything to show up. I take the HDMI cable coming from the satellite box, plug it straight into the TV, and it works.
Going through the menu (on the 616 display) looking to turn off the standby feature to see if that can change it. Can't find the option, but I do notice that CBL/SAT has a component video input turned ON, with all the others for component turned OFF. All of my sources are HDMI. Before last night, I had:
1. STB/DVR: Dishnetwork tuner/DVR
2. GAME: Boxee box
Both TV outputs used; a remote TV on the monitor output.
Last night I added the Fios STB/DVR to the mix, running HDMI into the CBL/SAT input.
So I turn that off, and I'm not sure the exact details that follow, but after turning that off, HDMI works again.
I tried turning that input back on (under the component inputs) to see if I could "break" the HDMI. It kept working.
Since I couldn't break it, I'm not sure it was really the cause, but thought I'd share this data point.

If it ever fails and you aren't able to get your HDMI working again via any other method, you'll need to do a 'Clear' on the receiver (press/hold second button on the front panel, from the left, then the Power button - 'Clear' will display and then the AVR will power off) and then power it back on again.

You will lose all of your settings; sometimes the NET settings/accounts will stick though.

I wish Onkyo will release a firmware update where you can save your settings.

I just received my new 414 yesterday. It came with a note that said to do USB f/w update before anything else. In looking for the f/w, I found this thread (oh my!). I got the f/w that is dated 6/14 (I saw reference on the forum to using the 615 f/w dated 7/4??). So I unzipped the 3 files to a USB and followed the instructions. after selecting f/w upgrade, the screen displays the current f/w (which is apparently the original version) and I can do nothing else. The instructions say I should select upgrade from USB but I have no options on the screen. Home takes me back and Return takes me to that menu. I though that maybe it did not like my flashdrive so I tried another. Curiously, with the new flash drive, it reports no date on the screen. I formatting the flash drive with fat32 before copying the files. I will retry with nfs. Any thoughts?

Update: I was able to do the f/w update by lan w/no problem (2 step upgrade). However, if I plug a USB drive in, I still get "No storage" display on the fron panel. Also, I noticed that the pow led on the flash drive flashes non-stop, where it is solid when plugged into a computer. I have yet to hook anything up except the HDMI to the Tv so I will later test to see if I can use the USB, which I suspect I cannot.

I just got a 414 and did the f/w upgrade by LAN (2 steps). I still have the text menu but it reports that it has the current f/w. However, it will currently not recognize the USB so there may be other problems. Can someone confirm that they have a 414 with the new graphic home menu please. The only local dealer I have is HHGregg and they dont know squat.

Sorry, didn't realize you were referring to the nicer GUI menu which starts with the 515.

My subwoofer that I have connected to my nr616 suddenly does not have sound. Anyone have ideas why this might be? Also is there a way to test whether it is the 616 or the subwoofer?

Thanks!
OK, since I last posted, HDMI has been working, unit turns on with remote while in standby, and I'm not touching anything.

I assume you've checked that the sub is still powered, and still has a good connection from the audio out of the receiver to the sub.

Could you have changed the sound format? I think there are some modes that don't use the subwoofer.

Some modes will not send audio to the sub (stereo) if the front mains are set to LARGE. I think there is a sub selection to enable low freq send to sub regardless of mode/speaker size. The easiest way to test is to use the test-tone/audessy set-up whick will tone out each channel discretely.

Yes .... with the sub plugged in and powered ON (not AUTO), unplug the cable from the back of the 616 and rub your finger over it ... if you hear static from the sub, the sub and cable are likely both okay, if not, try replacing the cable, and if still no joy, then the sub has gone bad.

New firmware out today, 7/24/12:

I have one of these in the mail, hopefully no issues when I get it, this Receiver is a freaking steal at this price and feature set.
I installed the 7/24 firmware via USB and so far no remote control power-on issues to speak of. I had them every once in awhile before this update, but I could never figure out a pattern to why or when it happened.

Hopefully Onkyo is getting things fixed, it's a great receiver and value for $400!

I had just bought a new 60" Samsung 3D 7000, Samsung 3D blueray and had an old Onkyo I loved for the sound. The old Onkyo just didn't have the punch so I bought the Onkyo TX NR 616 because the last Onkyo I had worked flawlessly for 15 years. I loved my old one and figured the new one would be the same, boy was I wrong... At first I couldn't get it to work at all so thinking that times had changed and I was out of date I actually hired a guy who was a PRO with 27 years experience installing home systems. That's when I got the news from him that their were problems with the new Onkyos. After he left it worked fine for 1 day and I had the HDMI thing start to happen and voices wouldn't match the brand new Blueray. I tried all the setting to get it to match and it wouldn't. He came back out and reset the system and it worked that night but the next day the same thing happened. I took that one back and got a new one and called the Onkyo support team on the phone for 1 and a half hours and we finally got it running. But the next morning it wouldn't work so I called the support team again waited 40min to talk to someone, spent over an hour on the phone and tried getting the July 2012 firmware installed but it wouldn't take it and they finally told me to take it back and get another. They suggested getting a new one and before I set it up do the firmware update so back to the store I went for my third one. Guess what, the same thing happened and I called Onkyo again and after 1 hour and 30 min of waiting and not being able to get someone on the phone I finally gave up. I bought a Yamaha Aventage and set it up in minutes. It sounds awesome love the features and have had absolutley no problems with it. Onkyo was a huge disappointment and their support team suck!

Is it me, or did the 616 update disappear?

I downloaded what I thought was the 616 update a couple days ago to a thumb drive. Went back today to look for instructions, and it isn't there.

Anyone else notice this?

http://www.us.onkyo.com/download/software.cfm

Mine is working right now, I think I'll leave it alone for now, though the remote thing would be nice.

@jdsmoothie, many many thanks but I failed to include a significant piece of information: This is a WIRELESS (a wifi unit) subwoofer. So I don't know where the failure point is, the sub itself or the wifi unit? Any thoughts to test this?

Thanks again!

Hi. I read somewhere that its best not to buy a 515 that was manufactured before a certain date due to some issues. Does anyone have any idea please?

Well, got the old "you have a firmware update available" and three hours later it was stuck at 23% writing.mad.gif I called Onkyo and after trying a factory reset they said SORRY IT"S BRICKED.mad.gifmad.gifmad.gif Luckily I purchased it at Hhgregg and they took it back even though I was over the 30 day limit by 1 day, I got a new unit and it updated the firmware without a hitch. This time I bought the 5yr ins for $90. Don't want to get stuck 3 months down the road. This unit seems to function better than my original, don't know why. Even it's firmware update seemed to download and installed differently, weird!! So far it's working great and with no issues, but then again it's only been 4 days. Good luck to me rolleyes.gif

Did you fix it with the factory reset? I set up the the nr616 for my parents in their family room. Everything was working great, but as of tonight they were not able to get video. I have tried HDMI and composite with no luck. Audio works great, but no video. I am running over to their place again tomorrow to try to reset it and then run a firmware upgrade to see if I can get it working for them.

They also have a new nr515 in the bedroom running with no issues so far. I will see if if a firmware update is needed there as well. I'll be working on installing their new LCD wall mount at the same time.

As a side note, Zone 2 on both receivers has been working great. We are actually driving 6 speakers on the second zone on the nr616 with audiosource amp 100 amps. The nr515 is powering 1 speaker in their bath room off the powered out.

I didn't do a factory reset. It happened after I added another HDMI source, a Verizon fios TV DVR, to the CBL/SAT input. I previously had the satellite DVR on the DVR input, and Boxee box on the game input. Don't know if it was a coincidence, but that was the change that I had done prior to HDMI failing.

I went into the menu (using the front panel) and selected OFF for component input on the CBL/SAT input, where it was previously on.

Again, I'm not sure if that was the fix, but it has been working since.

Haven't messed with zone 2 stuff yet, but I have noticed that the Onkyo remote seems to pull up menus on the Fios TV DVR. I think selecting THX sound on the Onkyo remote pulls up "widgets" on the fios box.

I did end up doing a reset on the NR616, then the firmware update (it updated twice). We are not experiencing any issues now, so I'm hoping all is well now. Time will tell. We didn't make any changes to cause the issue to begin with, so I'm not clear on what caused the issue.

There have been zero issues with the NR515.

I purchased the 616 on Saturday and set it up. Everything worked fine right away. I used the supplied mic to calibrate the speakers and was on my way. Right now I have the Klipsch RB 62 II as the front left and rights. With a Klipch rc 52 ii as the center. Initially the auto calibrated sounded clear and crisp but didn’t pack the punch that I was looking for. Thanks to my more knowledgeable than I cousin we decided on hooking up the Ethernet cable and going through the two firmware updates (1hr) i was able to access the manual menu and check the settings. The auto calibration had the center at -5 and the left and right at -3. I set them all to +3 and now the audio makes you feel like you are in the movie. I haven't had any problems with the HDMI not working or not turning on, but it is two days old. I will be working the receiver hard for the next few weeks to make sure that it isn't a lemon.

I haven’t purchased a subwoofer and rear surround just yet. But I will be adding those components next month.
- any suggestions?

Thinking of the 515 as I dont need all the features of the 616. It seems most of the discussion is on the 616. Does the 515 have the same issues? I have 2 setups in 2 different rooms and frankly have never put the video thru the reciever. Always used the the best direct connection method (depending on my equip at the time svideo then component) from sat or cable direct to the TV. With the advent of hdmi, streaming music, apple tv etc I see the need for convienience but if I am only watchng from my HD cable box and occasionaly blu-ray could I go component video DVR to TV and optical audio in and avoid this issue? equip: comcast HD dvr Panasonic 60in plasma and 5.1 speaker system with sony blue ray.
my bad....I did see that ndskurfer had no videio out of the component connections also. and that his 515 was working ok but any other 515 feedback?

I've had minor annoyances with my unit. I think I can live with them, but time will tell. I took the unit out of the box 2 weeks ago and did not perform any firmware updates. I just plugged everything in and started to play. First issue was I could not get video from a component connection on my Wii. I plugged the wii directly into the projector and changed the resolution settings to 480i and now I can see video from the wii. I ordered a WiiToHdmi connector anyway... we'll see what that does. The next issue is with my Motorola cable STB. On my 605 I had it plugged into component, but the 616 only has 1 component input mad.gif. So, I used HDMI. It seemed fine for an entire football game, but later that evening started to drop the signal. I started to watch another game a week later and didn't even make the half before it dropped signal completely. So, I figured I'd just plug it into component and all would be well again. NOT! I cannot get any video from the component input.

Since all this fun, I've done the firmware updates over the network. I had the unit on the Olympics for a few hours and it seemed ok (cable STB via HDMI). All other sources seem OK. watched The Lorax last night on XBMC (again, HDMI) and it was perfect.

I've also hooked up Zone 2 to my patio speakers and use the Onkyo app to control it, using Slacker Radio. I'm loving this feature, but sometimes the Android App gets out of sync with what's playing and you have to fart around a bit to get it back in sync. And once Zone 2 stopped completely. After a few restarts and various wire-jiggling, it appeared to start working. Not sure what happened there. One other note, this unit doesn't seem to have the balls of the 605. I really gotta crank it up. But, some EQ and playing with settings may help that.

So, I'd really like to get the component input working with my STB just in case HDMI just goes flaky for that unit. Suggestions? My other option is to buy another long HDMI cable and plug the STB into HDMI2 on the projector, but that kind of defeats the purpose of an AVR and frankly ticks me off!

I was at my parents again last night helping with mounting their new tv on the wall. While I was over there, they mentioned that their NR515 receiver would not power on through the remote (neither Onkyo remote nor Harmony remote). All other commands worked, just not the power. I didn't have time while I was over to play around with this issue, but I will be updating the firmware on that receiver tonight - I hope this resolves this issue. Outside of that, they are very happy with their new set up (stereo in-walls, new tv, and mono speaker in master math through zone 2).

I had updated the NR616's firmware, but not the NR515 as we don't have that one wired by ethernet and I was not aware of any issues till now. I will be updating via usb tonight.

Tomorrow I will be setting up Zone 3 on the NR616 to my parents backyard (zone 2 is going to the kitchen, dining room, & living room).

Just set up a 414 and so far everything is working fine except one annoyance:

I can't add any vtuner stations to My Favorites. When playing a station, I go to the menu, select "Add to My Favorites", then select "OK" on the next screen. But, when I go to My Favorites folder, it's empty. I had gone through and added about a dozen stations, only to discover none of them were actually added to My Favorites.

Anyone else having this issue and know how to fix it?
Hi all, UK user here.. I bought a 515 last week and set it up yesterday.. issues already!

Out of the box the hybrid standby function worked (after enabling in the menu), so I could watch my Sat box with the AVR in standby... however after installing 2 (yes 2) firmware updates that the unit kept prompting me to install.. no video or audio in hybrid standby anymore :-(

ONKYO support suggested a reset, but this has not made any difference.

Suggestions anyone? I'm glad I purchased that Richer Sounds 5 year warranty now.. I might need it!! mad.gif

Otherwise no noticeable issues, I note from other forums that main HDMI fails when the unit is in standby for a long time, I've not found this out yet, but if it happens the ONKYO is going back and I might get a SONY again.. been happy with my old SONY AVR for years.. but no HDMI or net features, hence the upgrade.
The firmware updates on the NR515 did not fix the issue with the remotes responding to the power button after it has been in standby over time.. Anybody else have updates on this issue from your receiver?
