From the digital bits....

First, they've just set Little Shop of Horrors: The Director's Cut for Blu-ray release on 10/9 (SRP $34.99). The BD Book edition will include both the theatrical cut and the restored Director's Cut featuring the 20-minute alternate ending (now in full color)! The theatrical cut will include audio commentary by director Frank Oz. You'll also get the Frank Oz and Little Shop of Horrors: The Director's Cut introduction by Oz (with Richard Conway), the A Story of Little Shop of Horrors documentary, outtakes and deleted scenes with optional commentary and a pair of theatrical trailers.

If it came with Corman's version, it would have been cool....

more info from the bits....

"The footage of the original ending was previously available only in black & white in the extra content of a limited number of copies of a DVD edition released in 1998. Now, with the help of production notes from Frank Oz and others on the film’s creative team, WHV has meticulously restored and digitally remastered the ending, in full color, with the elaborate special effects in tact. Sound has also been rebuilt and mixed in Dolby 5.1. The theatrical version has also been re-mastered."

And if that isn't clear enough for you, we've confirmed with the studio this morning that this isn't some sort of digital colorization of the B&W footage, but was mastered from the original color negative.

There was a bit of color footage of the ending in the outtakes section on that old withdrawn DVD, so I can't imagine it was that much of an ordeal to find the whole thing.

I'm interested in seeing it attached to the movie, but I believe they axed it for a good reason. Some people criticized the theatrical version for turning into an "effects show" -- just imagine if they saw the original 10 minute finale which basically turns a little stage musical into a Godzilla movie! I mean, the effects are great and the budget all went towards it, but it doesn't fit with everything else that came before it.

Still sounds like a bloody cool package though. Can't wait!

It's been long enough since I've seen this, that I don't clearly remember the theatrical ending. EW posted this clip of the original ending, and I am blown away. How could you cut all these effects shots?

I watched this the other day on HDNet (theatrical ending, of course). It's the second time I've seen it, and my thoughts remain the same: I prefer the original 1960 Roger Corman movie. However, I understand the 1986 version is extremely faithful to the musical.

YMMV .

While film like in the caps the detail is weak, I suspect this is an old scan.

Looks better than the old HDTV scan

I only briefly skimmed through it this morning. Looks good, a bit better than the HDTV scan. The detail decent enough IMO, enough to show off the care they put into Audrey II. This is definitely a show piece for some of the old school special effects especially regarding the Audrey II puppet. It's amazing crafted, no way CG could touch what they did with that puppet IMO.

A screenie for ya...

Got this the other day. Looks and sounds great. I would recommend it to any fan of this movie.

Watching the director's cut was interesting; definately a different ending than the theatrical release. Glad they included both.
