Value Electronics 2011 Shootout

Elite
contrast ratio (ANSI) 15.194:1 <- we ain't gonne see a LCd with a contrast ratio like this any time soon wink.gif
black level (MLL) .0004
929
contrast ratio (ANSI) 4279:1
black level (MLL) could not be measured for MLL as the panel shuts down when 0 IRE is generated so accurate measurement was not possible.

The Sony set did not have its backlight on... So those numbers are meaningless. Should I point you to the thread last year when D nice said the 929 was the best set of the year. Obviously before the Elite came out, but then we found out the Elite didn't really know how to produce accurate color

Oled doesn't have zones . They light themselves like plasma. He is talking about the 55 inch 950. Also let's be clear here in regards to an Elite successor.......Sharp basically is going broke, and I can assure you the last thing on their mind is the tiny percentage of videophiles who mind you , have already purchased the 2011 color deficient Elite. If Sharp wanted to make more money they would just fix the color issue on the current sets and then They could probably just keep selling the current set. I would even buy it then

some of AVS finest - DNice/ChadB - prefered the 929 over the Elite ( after the Shootout).

Not get off topic but how long would anyone assume the HX950 (55"or 65") would be available for retail, through Summer '13?
So, I wonder who will be the first person together one of these now that they are available as in stock on the Sony site
post #190 of 268
I'm waiting for the 65", but even for the 55" there's still no info or release date for Canada. Hopefully it's before November, as I'm itching to get mine.
Ok so thank you all for the info

FYI

I just placed my order for the 55hx950 on sony site and the checkout price was $2999.99.

I dont know why because when you open the page it lists it for 3499.99 but thats not what I paid when I placed my order.

below is a copy of part of my receipt that pasted weird but oh well:

I placed an order through the Sony store with my company's 10% EPP discount. Came out to $2699.99.
Holy crap, I just pre-ordered this from Sony in 65". It better be better an Elite, but for $2500 less. I was also considering the Samsung ES6500 in 65" for a whopping $1900 or so less than I paid. I hope I'm doing the right thing. I know I sure as heck like the LOOK of the Sony better.

Ah, I see "Silicon Forest". Take it you are up in Portland. Love no sales tax! I'm interviewing up at Intel in Hillsboro so hopefully see you up there on the flip side. wink.gif

Ordered from Sony as well for $2999.99. Paid tax just the same as if I ordered from Amazon. Any idea where they ship from?

That's exactly what I did for the 65". Too bad you still have to pay tax.
Excited to see what some of you guys have for a review when you start getting them. I'm waiting for the 65 and I may just get it at BB because I feel bad they could go under and I will not have any spot for electronics.

What are the chances we can get this thread converted over to an owners thread now that some of you have sets enroute to you?

Good sleuthing... no sales tax in OR. They'll make it up on income tax, though. smile.gif

I'm not in Oregon. I did have to pay sales tax. The Silicon Forest wasn't me. Had to pay 10% sales tax. But I got a 10% discount so it evens out.

Awesome, was waiting for Amazon, but I just might order from ABT. I know ABT has a good return policy for TV's.

There is so far no owner. I therefore recommend that the first one to get an hx950 start a Sony XBRxxHX950 Owner's Thread.
And please, leave out ''official'' from the title.

I live 2 hours away from Chicago so it isn't the worst case if I have to return it. Better than paying return shipping from the Sony Style website.

The HX950 *should* have better build quality and screen uniformity than the 929.
I knew an AV repair tech who said the warranty issues and build quality drop of the 2010 to 2011 range was drastic. The 2011 Sony lineup was the first that had all production outsourced to external contractors (flextronics?).

The 950 should be FAR better than the samsung.

Good news, Amazon followed suit and now is selling the TV as well at the $500 discount. You can get it on Amazon currently for $2,998.00.

Glad I decided to wait till today to order. By far the best online retailer to work with for TV's.
