Can't Edit Account Details

Thread Starter
With the upgrade of AVS Forums I no linger have the options to boldface, italicize, embed links, add images, etc. I have gone to My Profile but clicking on Edit Account Details does not bring up a new page or options. I have updated to Firefox 13 and also have Internet Explorer 8 but neither works to get into the Edit Account Details.

I don't know if this is related but links I click on do not change color when I go back to that page with the link until I refresh the page (or leave that web site and come back) in Firefox. This happens on AVS Forum and other websites. (Yes, I have Remember History selected). All other software and Add-Ons running are the same as when link color change did occur.

Appreciate any suggestions.

I still see no editing controls. I cannot access Edit Account Details. I can click on Reply, Quote, or Full Page Editor but in none of them is the ability to manipulate text, add links, or anything but just type alphanumerics from my keyboard.

Must be something corrupted or an application conflicting.

Yeah, try another browser to rule it out.

You don't see controls like this above the editor?

Do you have Javascript disabled?

Mike Lang:

IE 8 does not allow me to enter Edit Account Details either. When hoovering my cursor over the Edit Account Details button I see the following link: http://www.avsforum.com/u/8360341/stratmanx# which when clicked does nothing to what i see on the page. Internet Explorer 8 DOES change HTML link colors automatically after I've clicked on them as I would expect it to. Firefox 13 still does not automatically change the color of a clicked on link even after upgrading Java and clearing cache and cookies. I do use NoScript and Adblock Plus with Firefox but both are disabled for AVS Forum and neither is used with Internet Explorer. I am using Norton Internet Security. Could there be a process or setting in Windows XP Pro I have disabled that is causing the issue?

Barmar:

I have updated Java, it is enabled, rebooted and still have the same issues. I do not see the controls you show in your post with either Firefox 12/13 or IE 8.

Thank you for the help Mike and Barmar!

You definitely have something funky going on with IE as you're the only one I know of seeing this. To start, I'd reinstall a fresh version of IE.

"Norton Internet Security"

Just for kicks, can you disable that and see if that have any affect. I am nit suggestion surfing without protection mind you...just a test as I THINK that it also can do things with java script. I use a MacBook so I do not currently use such items so I am not sure on the settings it has and what it does and does not do.

Just was a thought.

Note...If it was a issue directly with the site, I think we would have a lot more reported on it. So we hope we can help you find it. Sorry for the issue.

Tried disabling Norton Internet Security. No difference.

Tried my notebook which has an older version of Firefox 8.x and IE8. Same issues as on my desktop. Both computers running Norton Internet Explorer. The difference is Firefox 3.6x worked OK. It was the upgrade to the new AVS forum that i lost all the editing features from even showing and then first noticed issues with links not changing colors after being clicked on following upgrade of Firefox to v12 and then v13 the next day.

Will try new install of Firefox and IE. Since the issue is on two different PC's, each running different versions of Windows, each using different versions of Norton Internet Security (2011 and 2012), different versions of Java, and each using different versions of Firefox, I think there is something in a Firefox Add-On, Windows setting, or an application/process causing the conflict.

I'm not sure if you actually did disable everything in NIS. A robust AV nowadays won't let you disable it completely easily. There are background hidden processes still running.

NAV usually has a setting to Enable Script Blocking: you need to uncheck it.

Also java isn't the same as javascript (but related). There's usually a setting in a browser to enable javascript.

Search Google using 'Norton disable javascript' and you see others have the same problems.

Kilian.ca:

Cannot find Script Blocking in the control settings for Norton Internet Security. I did a Google search as you suggested and read various links. Most were for old versions that did not apply to the settings available in current and recent versions of NIS. I did see one post from 2011 but it also did not apply. I suppose I could boot into safe mode with networking, or, disable the processes for NIS at boot, and then see what happens without NIS running at all.

Javascript is enabled for all browsers.

I disabled all Add-Ons and Extensions in Firefox but no change. I figured since Internet Explorer has the same issue with link and My Profile/Edit Account Details that this was not a Firefox specific issue.

Here is a new piece of information: Under Firefox's Tools/Options/Content is a section called Font & Colors, clicking on Colors and unchecking "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above" will return the function of clicked on links changing colors automatically with me having to refresh the page BUT it also breaks the formatting of the web page. Ugly.

Something else is at play here and the two best guesses are NIS and whatever setting I've changed in Windows XP Pro SP3. Long ago I set certain Services to manual and a few to disabled. Since things were working OK with those Service changes, I'm thinking it must be an update by windows, the affected web sites, NIS, or something else not yet considered.

OK. This is weird. I started Internet Explorer 8 and checked links to see if they would change colors after being clicked on and they DID! I was still unable to Edit Account Details and another web site I visit still has the problem with link color changes. So there is something affecting both browsers but unequally (probably in part due to web site coding compatibilities with my current set up).

I use XP Pro SP3 (also disabled some services), FF (no extensions you're using) and McAfee and everything works.

[Deleted - I thought you were also having trouble with the Quick reply editor but apparently not. Compared to the screenshot in post 6 the layout of the editing icons is different in my browser, different order, different options, no Source button, no Normal button... very strange!]

There are free sample js for downloading and testing, for example here: http://www.w3schools.com/js/tryit.asp?filename=tryjs_write. It looks harmless.

Something else to try:
Turn off ad blocking (if there is a setting) in Norton.

Maybe something to do with the Windows scripting engine?
.

I don't see a setting for Javascript or Ad Blocking in Norton Internet Security. Anyone have an idea?

Javascript is working by a couple of tests i found on the internet.

So far I have uninstalled Java, cleaned cache and cookies for both IE8 and Firefox 13, tried ipconfig /flushdns (did not flush), and then reinstalled Java. No difference. Upgraded all critical updates for Windows including whatever their was for IE8. No difference. I have uninstalled Firefox and am going to reinstall but I doubt that it will fix the issues since IE suffers the same Edit Account Details problem as Firefox. Maybe, however, the reinstall of Firefox will fix the link change color problem since that does work in IE8 - at least on AVS Forum but not on at least one other site I go to that I just checked.

I was hoping that AVS Forum Administrator could tell me what link I should see when I hoover over/click on the Edit Account Details button. When hoovering my cursor over the Edit Account Details button I see the following link: http://www.avsforum.com/u/8360341/stratmanx# which is the link for My Profile with a # added to the end of the link. This obviously is not the link to Edit Account Details. Maybe I can fill in the URL manually to take me to the settings. What should it be?

The edit account details button doesn't go to a new URL, it only changes the content in the center of the profile page, so there's no URL to take you directly to it.

OK. Thanks.

Still trying to figure this out. frown.gif

If it happens to my PC I'd do a Ghost image, then uninstall NIS and see. That's the only way to find out if NIS is responsible in any certainty (not sure if internet and js work in Safe Mode). If that isn't the culprit restore the image quickly.
